He wasn't my first choice but i think he'll do great.Anybody feel weird that this part is over with? Seems like we've been casting Cap for 3 years now.

I dont think he took a knockoff

It was most definitely a knock off. That was the whole point. The equation/recipe for the original was only in Erskine's head and he was killed after they gave it to Cap and the government was trying to replicate it.

I'm not happy about Chris Evans. I think he is borderline DB.
Nothing about him says Cap to me. Frikkin bummer if you ask me.

I think I finally understand how all dem peeps felt about Heath Ledger being cast and not being perma white. I get it now.

I wonder why Jon Favreau deleted his tweet. Is it possible Marvel didn't appreciate his jab about Chris playing 2 Marvel characters (since that seems to be the most sensitive issue with the fans)?

Chris Evans Wins the Role of 'Captain America'
by Matt McDaniel · March 22, 2010
After nearly two years of speculation, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news on Monday that Chris Evans will be playing Marvel Comics' iconic hero Captain America in the big-screen adaptation.

The movie, titled "The First Avenger: Captain America," was announced in 2008 after Marvel Studio's first production, "Iron Man," became a box-office hit. The names of many actors -- from established stars to mostly unknowns -- have been rumored to be up for the role for months. Action movie veterans Channing Tatum ("G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra") and Garrett Hedlund (the upcoming "Tron Legacy") were reportedly considered, as were TV regulars Chace Crawford ("Gossip Girl") and Scott Porter ("Friday Night Lights"). Even wild-cards like "The Office" funnyman John Krasinski tested for the part.

Chris Evans was a late addition to the roster of potential leads, but he had already established himself as a comic-book hero by playing the Human Torch in the two "Fantastic Four" movies. This goes against director Joe Johnston's stated intention to use an unknown actor for the role. But Evans is an American, which was Johnston's other requirement (and left out foreigners like Australian "Avatar" star Sam Worthington).

Finding the right actor to play Captain America has been pivotal for Marvel Studios because they have grander plans for the character beyond the one film. According to Johnston, "The First Avenger" is an origin story set predominantly during the 1940s, when the red-white-and-blue suited hero first appeared in comics. But the movie will also set up "The Avengers" -- based on Marvel's long-running team series -- where Captain America will lead a group of superheroes that will include Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man.

While fans of the comics have expressed their doubts at some of the candidates for the role, response to Evans has been uniformly positive. His performance as Johnny Storm in "Fantastic Four" and "Rise of the Silver Surfer" were widely considered to be the best parts of those movies. It's been said that Evans will sign a nine-picture contract that could see him appear as Captain America in multiple films, both on his own and with the Avengers.

Production on "The First Avenger" will begin in the U.K. in June. Hugo Weaving ("The Matrix") is in talks to play Captain America's nemesis, the Red Skull. It is the third movie in Marvel Studio's pipeline, following "Iron Man 2," which is coming to theaters on May 7th of this year, and "Thor," currently filming for a May 2011 release. "Captain America" is scheduled to open on July 22, 2011.

In the meantime, Chris Evans has two films set to open this year, both of which also happen to be based on comic books. Next month, he'll play a Special Forces operative in the adaptation of Vertigo Comics' "The Losers." Then in August he will appear in "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World," based on the graphic novel series.

Anyway, I'm happy about the news, I just hope the screenplay is decent and the director brings more than his decent game.

Chris Evans is a ridiculously talented and hot actor. I wish him great success and I hope Cap turns out better than F4 did.

EDIT:

I still don't care that he played in the F4 movies. If an actor can play a character from two different books the same standared should aplied to things based on comicbooks. Nobody is going to remember the F4 movies anyway.

I trust the writers and director, I'm not super thrilled for Evans as Captain America. but I will give it a chance. I would have preferred someone older but considering he is signed on for three movies it will help as he gets older.

I just wish my opinion was a little less "Eh.... i guess it could be worse" and a little more "Evans is going to kick ass!!!" I'm going to need some convincing, but I'm not totally against it.

I always bring up Sunshine not because he deserved an Oscar but because people only know him from Not Another Teen Movie and the Fantastic Four Franchise.Sunshine showed his most serous performance for Chris Evans and had no hint of comedy what so ever.As well as Evans character in Sunshine showed hints of Captain America in it, dedicated, determined, self sacrificing, and flush with resolve.

An Oscar? Really? :wow: .... guess the critics are just fallin' asleep all over when it comes to this kid.

Now that he is here I just hope that he doesn't disappoint me like a certain lead actor from a billion dollar comicbook movie did.

He has my complete faith...for now.

Why does everyone bring up Sunshine whenever someone else doubts Evans? I've seen Sunshine and he was fine, but it wasnt such a memorable performance to shut up doubters. Jeez, you'd think that we re talking about Pacino in the Godfather....

That's where the "internet forum" part comes in.

Oh well. I'm not watching the movie. Marvel Studio are going down the drain.

I look at it this way. Hes going to be bulkier and going to have blonde hair, I think its safe to say that he will probably look nothing like he did in the Fantastic Four movies. As soon as we start seeing pictures/trailers, were going to be forgetting all about Human Torch.

Well, his role in Sunshine merits enough credit to his acting abilities because before that he was Johnny Storm and nothing else. I think Sunshine is where Chris decided to "prove" himself, and he did wonderfully in the movie. He, next to Cillian Murphy (and if not better than him) was the best thing about the movie. And that says a lot.

You mean Cillian Murphy - the James Spader knock-off? :hehe:

I think most of us are at this point.

I'm just so relieved its not Tatum or Krasinski i'm willing to give anyone a shot at this point, however. Evans is a solid 'safe' choice, and with the right handling i'm sure he'll do well in the role, if not as well as maybe some of the others may have been.

I really hope they don't give him the "brown hair buzz cut" treatment they gave the historically blonde Johnny Storm.

I'm WAY more excited about Evans playing Cap than Reynolds as Green Lantern. Unlike Evans, Reynolds really hasn't (to my knowledge) shown us he can play anything other than what he's known for. The people saying that about Evans need to check out London, Fierce People, Sunshine, and Street Kings. He's shown several times that he's capable of more than wisecracking...which I truly can't say for Reynolds. Whenever Reynolds tries to play it straight (Definitely, Maybe or to some extent Smokin' Aces), whatever screen presence he supposedly had just vaporizes - it's like he's not even there.

I've watched all these movies and he always plays uber bore Chris Evans.

"Welcome to the new Captain. He continues the fine tradition of playing two Marvel characters!"

He probably had to delete b/c Marvel hasn't "officially" confirmed the casting yet

Remember when fanboys were beeyotching and whining about Johnny Storm having dark brown hair in the FF films? And look at how things turned out--it was a blessed prophecy for the future!! :oldrazz:

I wont be forgetting about the Human Torch because Evan's played that role to perfection. The same way I'm certain he'll play Cap to perfection.

While I do feel that Evans is...a weird choice, it's based solely on his looks, or more specifically, his face. He just doesn't seem...heroic enough in the way that I imagined Captain America would be this time around, but that being said, Marvel's been pretty spot on with their casting thus far, they must of seen something.

One thing that bothers me in particular though, is the suggestion that since he's already been one character he shouldn't play another. That's ludicrous, there are plenty of genre actors, why should the comic film be any different, especially considering the FF flicks were less than iconic.

Just happened to flip to Jimmy Fallon just now and Mark Valley is on there. I can't not see him as Captain America after the other thread, still can't get over the resemblance.
