THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE! (Evans cast as Reynolds. World implodes)

As usual, there were better and worse choices. I like Chris Evans, but for this to work the way it needs to, he's going to need to have a breakout performance. Can't wait to see him pretend to be weak and frail. We'll see, I guess. Till he does, I've taken to calling it THE FIRST ANNOYANCE: CAPTAIN ARROGANT.

I should clarify. I feel like it could almost work. Weak, frail, insecure Steve Rogers becomes powerful, somewhat overly arrogant and eager for the fight Captain America. Lots of interesting angles to play with there.

Arnie has portrayed Mr Freeze in B&R but that shouldn't rule him out from playing a different Bat villain in Nolan's DK sequel.

So now that Evans is cast, Cap will automatically be arrogant? I didn't realize he was writing the character, too...

What was that film from, where Evans is in the tux with the slicked down hair?

i think Loss Of A Teardrop Diamond that was a period piece film he did with bryce dallas howard

Hmmmm Chris Evans in a dramatic period piece film..... I wonder how many one liners he had? I'm going to refer to that film as "The Cockiness of an Arrogant Diamond". :P ;)

Heres the trailer for Loss of a Teardrop Diamond... The movie looks pretty lame, and the trailer is horrible, but i'll tell you what... Chris Evans in that looks AMAZINGLY Captain America... The first shot of him didn't impress me, but ever single shot or scene or line from him really impressed me. No cockiness, a straight, confident look and a genuine sincerity to him. I'm officially all aboard the Evans Train.

Check out from 0:58 seconds onwards... The narrators description of his character is pretty funny too.

he does have a tendency to be in bad films but he always gives good performances

Yeah, that trailer is weird because I guess this was the first production of the lost Tennessee Williams script, and they were trying to advertise it in the style of the old Tennessee Williams classics from the 50's and 60's with Brando and Newman. It actually looks like the whole movie was done in that style, judging by the accents, tbh. Which might not have been a good choice on the part of the director, because in our more cynical times, it would almost certainly come off as spoofy or campy.

I just think, with most peoples concerns about Evans being that he'll be too cocky or unable to portray the sensitive and humble side of Cap, that trailer shows otherwise. Even though the movie looks pretty awful, i'm going to try and track it down just to see properly what Evans is like.

@pvponline Saying it's dumb for Chris Evans to play ANOTHER superhero is like saying it's dumb for Clint Eastwood to play multiple cowboys or cops.

@ronmarz I understand people being worried Chris Evans will play Cap just like he did Human Torch. Since Ledger's Joker was totally a gay cowboy.

asking this question a page or two back-- is it true that evans didn't screentest?

a screen test require costume fitting and marvel already knows what he looks like in one

I've not yet seen Sunshine but nothing he did in Street Kings impressed me at all. As for for Krasinski, read my TMT article :oldrazz: :cwink:

Like I said, I think I'd be more comfortable, a lot more comfortable if we had a better director.

I might write a loose sequel article, in defense of Evans on there :oldrazz:

My concern isn't that Johnston is capable of creating a good film, he is, with the right script. My concern is that Johnston will be unable to coach Evans to the level he needs to be coached. Johnston is not an actor director. The best performance he has ever gotten out of one of his actors was Robin WIlliams in Jumanji and that was not a case of Johnston directing a brilliant performance but Williams being Williams in a role that was perfect for him. Evans' style of acting is not naturally perfect for Cap, however. Therefore he needs, IMO, a director who can bring out the best in his actors and Johnston isn't that kind of director.

I will agree that JJ is not particularly actor focused, and in a film that will rely heavily on Evans ability to embody Captain America, that is a valid concern. Only time will tell if Evans can do it, and I think he can personally. He's not exactly been in the best films in regard to writing, so I don't feel his natural talent has been fully shown to us.

However, I do think JJ's experience on Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Rocketeer are reasons to be optimistic. JJ did a good period piece superhero movie, and was involved in a film they should be taking a lot of notes from. For JJ, I think it comes down to the script. When given a good script, he shines. When given a bad one, doesn't shine so well.

It all comes down to writing. Evans won't be a cocky, arrogant jerk if Cap isn't written that way. If the script is good, both Evans and JJ should shine IMO

Egads that trailer was horrible.

I've been cautiously optimistic about Evans, but even in that trailer, he seemed to be a good fit for portraying Rogers. Personally, I've enjoyed his work, but much like with Ledger, RDJ, et al. final judgment comes from the finished product, but just seeing his moments in this trailer put me at ease.

Oh, and can it be stated enough that thank goodness Tatum didn't get this? I mean, seriously?

Chris Evans is an actor, if the role asks him to be serious he will play it serious, actors in comedic roles don't just waltz in and demand everything to be funny, they don't inject humour into every possible situation.
True but some people are just like that naturally no matter what role they play.
Just look at Jack Nicholson he always has a smart remark serious or not.
Bill Murray even when he plays a serious role.
Micheal Keaton when he played Batman was still kind of a wise guy.He had some humor in his role.
Also it's one thing to act seriously and it's another to be taken seriously.
Not everyone can pull it off.I'm not saying he can't just wondering if he can.

ED Brubaker approves via twitter

If Chris Evans actually has the role, I'm good with that. He was easily the best thing in the FF movies and he's been amazing in some others

Like I said, though, I wasn't a consultant and I have NO IDEA if he's actually got the gig or not.

Favreau would know. I don't.

It's honestly hard to remember much of the FF movie past them ruining Doctor Doom

trust the guys at Marvel studios to know this stuff. They've cast well so far in their movies

Those actors were comedians first. Chris Evans is just an actor. See some more of his other roles or watch that trailer I posted before. I can guarantee, there won't be a single laugh had in the loss of the Teardrop Diamond :P

As an actor Evans, is usually pretty good. I wouldn't say he has charisma like Swartzenegger for example, but he does have personality much like George Clooney.

Like Clooney , he's been in a lot of stinkers , but his personality is such that it can at least get you through a bad film.

One of my favorite performances of his was in the over the top relationship drama London. In the present day he's a washed up ,insecure addict who's afraid to be in the very pressence of his ex girlfriend. In flashbacks you see him as this overconfident , arrogant jerk who seems to look down on his gf during much of their relationship.

Again while the film itself is phew...his performance really carries the film because he's basically going from zero to sixty. He can play vunerable much better then most of his roles lead you to believe .
