Hey everyone - complete and utter newb to the boards here, but a 30 year comic book reader and collector.
I read a few of the responses and it's always good to see people passionate about comic book characters they love.
My thought on Evans is that I am a little bit bemused. I know many of you are sick of hearing the comment about playing other superheroes, but when the characters get this big it becomes a valid point.
Someone mentioned that if we followed that rule in mainstream movies, Clint Eastwood would not have been able to play any other cop than Harry Calahan. Agreed, and he did play another cop two years after his last Dirty Harry movie, in The Rookie. But comic books movies are different. The secret/public indentity as important as the superhero, and once you are established as a superhero and their alter ego, it is extremely difficult to shake, let alone become another superhero from the same comic book universe.
Chris Evans is going from high profile Human Torch to even higher profile Captain America, and in the same Marvel Universe. He is already established as Johnny Storm and the majority of comic book movie fans will already have identified him as such until someone else plays Johnny Storm.
To use an older example, what if Christopher Reeve was approached to play Bruce Wayne. Would that have been cool? Of course not. Evans becoming Cap would match that scenario if he had played Spiderman perhaps, but Johnny Storm is still a member of one of the most high profile teams in Marvel - and not a quiet one either. It's not like you could forget he played him......twice.
Yes he can act, but he literally does not have the chops for Cap.
Sorry if I bored anyone, or repeated anything gone before, but I've been reading Cap for the past 20 years, and I for one am disappointed with the choice.
Hugo Weaving though? Inspired casting......
