don't they come hand and hand? are you reaching?

Nah because you can have a personality and be loud and obnoxious. Charisma is more about "winning people over" ..... magnetism..... charm...... charisma is a subset of personality.

I mean, if you have a lot of personality, that means you have a lot of charisma. That's why Rock Sexton is reaching for an arguement.

I just owned him. Here that, Rock? Pwned you hard!

Self high-five! :awesome:

Hey everyone - complete and utter newb to the boards here, but a 30 year comic book reader and collector.

I read a few of the responses and it's always good to see people passionate about comic book characters they love.

My thought on Evans is that I am a little bit bemused. I know many of you are sick of hearing the comment about playing other superheroes, but when the characters get this big it becomes a valid point.

Someone mentioned that if we followed that rule in mainstream movies, Clint Eastwood would not have been able to play any other cop than Harry Calahan. Agreed, and he did play another cop two years after his last Dirty Harry movie, in The Rookie. But comic books movies are different. The secret/public indentity as important as the superhero, and once you are established as a superhero and their alter ego, it is extremely difficult to shake, let alone become another superhero from the same comic book universe.

Chris Evans is going from high profile Human Torch to even higher profile Captain America, and in the same Marvel Universe. He is already established as Johnny Storm and the majority of comic book movie fans will already have identified him as such until someone else plays Johnny Storm.

To use an older example, what if Christopher Reeve was approached to play Bruce Wayne. Would that have been cool? Of course not. Evans becoming Cap would match that scenario if he had played Spiderman perhaps, but Johnny Storm is still a member of one of the most high profile teams in Marvel - and not a quiet one either. It's not like you could forget he played him......twice.

Yes he can act, but he literally does not have the chops for Cap.

Sorry if I bored anyone, or repeated anything gone before, but I've been reading Cap for the past 20 years, and I for one am disappointed with the choice.

Hugo Weaving though? Inspired casting......

How do you know he doesn't have the chops? We haven't seen him in anything that requires him to be serious. But let me guess, Heath Ledger didn't have the chops for Joker right?

Sorry - let me clarify.

By chops I meant the look.....his face. His actual chops.

I don't think he looks right.

And you're right, I didn't think Ledger had the chops (in my context of the term), but then the make-up maketh the man in this case.

His acting ability was never in doubt.

And so it finally ends...I'll admit, Evans was never really a favorite choice of mine but I'm keeping an open mind about this. He's got a good look to him and I imagine he's going to bulk up greatly for the role, although already he's got a good size to him. And frankly, I prefer this choice over some of the other past rumored actors (looking at you Chace Crawford!).

I think he's going to do well.

I agree with the sentiment. I'm not thrilled over Evans (he just strikes me as a little schmarmy and will not have the innocense that Cap should have), but I can accept it. Especially considering the other choices.

The biggest fear for me is Johnson.

The biggest fear for me is that I will see Johny Storm instead of Captain America.

Granted that I love Chris Evans, This fear still seems very legitimate.

Does it not?

This is a fear I have as well, but what can you do....

On another note: just saw Sunshine so I'm liking serious/leader/heroic Evans. Just hope he can pull off a deeper voice for Cap.

Evans definitely has potential. I just have to forget he was ever Torch, and hopefully a FF reboot happens soon which would help too.

Far as I'm concerned Fox's marvel is Ultimate marvel and Marvels is 616. I don;t mind using the same actor for a different character. If they think someone is perfect for a role and that's something they would not take lightly then I have 100% faith in them. Its stupid to dismiss someone because of there previous acting jobs. unless of course they SUCKED. I've seen him in a number of films and IMO he always delivers. It's not like his fantastic four is even in the universe as the one marvels setting up. I can't wait to see him in action.

Normal people don't know wtf we are talking about when we discuss Ultimate and 616. My sister even recognizes Evans from F4. I believe once you play a superhero, it becomes as firmly entrenched in peoples' minds as much as type-casting.

BTW, that Kermit punch-out picture is hilarious. Do you have a larger version? I looked it up on the net, but only found that obscure site with all the tiled version.

Ive done a google search on him trying to find a pic of Evans with Caps sort or hair..

This looks like Cap imo. I've been recently reading the Captain America omnibus as soon as I saw that picture I was 100% Evans is the man for the job!

I'm not actually saying that's how it is. I'm just saying this marvel movie verse that's being set up and linking films should be obvious to the public that there different from the fox ones. Tbh the only real thing thats matters is the fans of the source material are finally getting what we want. The general public will see them as great films....but as comic fans we will see them in a much better light :yay:

Nah i robbed it from somewhere on here lol sorry man.

He better hit the gym hard and start bulking up. His current build is still very much close to Johnny Storm.

You're missing the point.

It's not about his ability to act or about the universe they're setting up.

The guy can act. The universe doesn't matter.

It's about believing that the actor is Captain America, and before the movie has even begun there are distinct and legitimate reservations about Chris Evans' ability to do that.

On the SHH poll, 11.5% think awesome casting, 35% saying he'll be ok, and the rest aren't too positive. That's more than 50% disagreeing in some respect. For a character like Captain America I would have hoped their choice would poll 75% approval at least.

But hey. I just wanted to share my opinion. I've never actually been compelled to do so until now.

I too hope that by the time Cap comes out we will have forgotten his stint as Johnny Storm, but most comic book fans will have seen both FF movies and still see him snapping the flame on with his fingers, and squaring up to The Thing, and shouting 'Flame On'.

I think you're seeing what you want to see..... Not going to debate who should've been Cap in this response, but the following faces are more Cap than Evans could ever be....

I think those guys look stupid. If that's what you think fair enough, I think he's got the Cap thing down. But there's always gonna be haters until he throws the Shield at someone's face.

I'm not debating the acting merits. I'm just talking about how people could ever think Evans "looks" like Cap.

oh he does'nt look exactly like him but i think he looks enough like him for people to see him as cap

look at rdj the only difference between rdj and stark is nicely parted hair and a goatee

I'm not a hater, but I don't see Cap in him either. Hey, maybe he'll hit the ball out of the park and give us the performance of his life. I'd love if that happens. But just judging by what I've seen before and by his looks, Cap just doesn't cross my mind,

watching Sunshine last night reaffirmed my opinion that he'll do a fine job as Captain America. he was basically the Captain America of that movie.
