Guys if you want EVEN A CHANCE of Ben Reilly appearing again, we gotta spread the word about the Clone Saga mini. Buy a copy for a friend, tell someone about it who stopped reading Spidey, do what you have to, because the sales of the first book are quite dire.

91 SPIDER-MAN CLONE SAGA #1 (OF 6) 27,697

:csad:

That number could increase a) when the current Amazing arc is finished or b) when the clone saga mini comes out in tpb.

no-one talking bout 609??? good ish, nice having Kaine back - looks set for a predictable ending next issue but who knows

Yeah Kaine will be the murderer of the family, it looks like. I have to say, for his last story on Spider-Man, you'd think Guggenheim would want to write a story that isn't a complete rehash of an old Clone Saga plot point that has already been done before. Not to mention for an arc called, "Who was Ben Reilly?" you don't really learn anything about who he was. Also, while an effective cliffhanger, when used sparingly, how many times will the second issue of an arc end with Peter about to expose his true identity to get out of a sticky situation?

edit -- Just re-read the issue, and I think I know what is going to happen with the death of the family. Kaine will burn the house down looking for Damon. Ben will show up and think Damon just went crazy and burned his house down, when Damon attacks Ben thinking Ben is the culpret, Ben beats him up thinking Damon is just crazy and attacking him. Ben looks all pissed and evil because he thinks Damon lost it and killed his own family. I wouldn't be surprised if somehow the family escaped, went into hiding, and Kaine knows where they are. That last part is highly unlikely, but still possible.

I honestly just hope I'm wrong. Our first in continuity Ben story in 15 years, want to get something... original.

Clone Saga #2 preview
http://www.comicscontinuum.com/stories/0910/23/marvelfirsts.htm

Ben as Scarlet Spider and already with blonde hair, working at the daily grind.
This is a cool setting, it has all the best parts in it.

From the preview...

The Good:

1) It's awesome to see blonde Ben Reilly interacting with the Daily Grind crew again! Wow, never thought even in this mini that I'd ever see Shirley, Devon and Buzz again. Now where's Desiree and Jessica?

2) Less so than above, but it was also pretty cool to see Ben in his Scarlet-Spider suit taking out Kaine with his patented impact-webbing and stingers.

The Bad:

1) Holy 90's exposition! That first page reminds me of everything that was bad with Defalco's Spidey comics during the clone saga. "My name is Ben Reilly, but I was born Peter Parker. Five years ago I.... blah blah blah." Dude, we know. That's what the recap page is for. Pure Defalco. He's a good writer, but he loves exposition a bit too much. He has to trust the reader a bit more.

2) Have to say, Defalco or Mackie can't write Kaine as well as DeMatteis. His dialogue here is painful.

All in all, just a couple minor gripes. This looks like it will be awesome. Remember the dismal sales of the first issue and the classic sophomore slump that this issue will face, so if everyone can afford it, they should pick up an extra copy for a friend or loved one.

Uh, JJJ, back in the 90s there was NO recap page. That exposition is what kept old readers, AND new, with the story. And at most it took up one page...not a tremendous loss.

And I just wanna say that over at Spiderfan, some of my colleagues also brought up the SAME concerns I said about #608. So it's NOT just me being a BND hater...there really are serious flaws with the story so far.

It's not the 90's. I realize this is a mini about a series that took place in the 90's, but it was annoying then and it's annoying in 2009. There is a recap page, and even a blurb at the top telling the reader who Peter and Ben are. Ben's thoughts here will read very awkward in the TPB form. It's not the fact it takes up space that irks me, it's the fact that it just isn't natural. I can't say I have ever delved into an inner-monologue about my life-story. :yay: But like I said it's an extremely minor nitpick and it bothers me, but not too much. I still love this mini-series, just saying it's not perfect by any means.

Dude, who cares? You can always find people on the internet who agree or disagree with your opinion. I didn't know you were still mulling over something I said weeks ago. :whatever: Tell ya what though, I'll admit there are a few valid nitpicks in ASM#608, if you can admit the same about the unnecessary and loaded exposition in the preview of Clone Saga #2.
Anyway, #609 was even better. Loved seeing Kaine again.

I haven't read issues 609 or 610 yet, so I can't predict how that story is going to end, but it seems that The Gauntlet is going to inevitably end with the death of Spider-Man, possibly in issue 666. That would make the story really long though, so it will probably happen before then. So, if Spider-Man does indeed die, then Marvel can't just outright cancel one of its most profitable series, so they will have to find someone to take over the role of Spider-Man until the real Spidey returns, but Spider-Man has a pretty unique power set. You can't just take some average Joe and put him in the role. It would seem to me that the only rational choice would be to revive Ben or have Kaine take over the role, providing Kaine doesn't die at the end of this current arc. But Kaine as Spider-Man? Sounds pretty weird to me, but then again some might have said that Bucky/Winter Soldier was a weird choice for the next Captain America, so you never know.

Some spoilers ahead, so don't read until you read Clone Saga 2.

So far so good, but I find the conciseness a little TOO jarring. We've got Ben with blonde hair, at the Daily Grind, and as the Scarlet Spider...but with no explanations or build-up to any of them.

If you remember, Ben hated the name Ken Ellis stuck him with, but here he almost seems to own it. Plus no battle with Traveler to force him to don the hoodie to play hero? And where's Seward Trainer in all this? Ben went and established his "cousin" ID during a time when he should still be with Seward. But the whys aren't answered. How much is different from what we already knew?

That would be my only complaint thus far. I think Ben's new life needs a little more elaboration than just Ben's back in town, and now he's a blonde super hero! That and the stingers are metal darts, not hard webs.

So far this series seems more like "Maximum Clonage retold" than "the clone saga the way it was meant to be told." I read every single issue of the clone saga, plus all the mini series (And I truly loved it), and I gotta say that Maximum Clonage plus the Jackal's ill-concieved plans to rule the world was the worst part by far. From what I could gather from Glen Greenburg in the Life of Reilly (any real clone saga fan has got to read it!) it seems like Maximum Clonage was never meant to be in the picture. Maximum Clonage was only put in the picture because the Clone Saga sold so well that they thought it meant the fans were saying, we want more clones! So they put in hundreds. So I don't really know how that fits into the "way it was originally meant to be told."

Wait. Didn't Batman die in #666 of his series? I don't think Marvel would so shamelessly ape an idea like that.

Anyway, I hope Spider-Man doesn't "die." And yeah, I put it in quotes because of course it would only last 6 months tops. Super-hero deaths are cheap enough as they are. In fact, ALL deaths in comics are cheap. Everything is starting to get retconned, even the lame dead-wood characters they killed (I mean, Mockingbird? Was anyone except Clint Barton really clamoring for her return?!).

I didn't know Batman died in issue #666, so that would be a pretty shameless rip off, so I guess it's unlikely that they would do that. And I totally agree about Mockingbird. What the hell? No one was begging for her to join the avengers. That's what I liked about New Avengers at first, it was only te guys who were a BIG deal. No stupid wasp or ant man. Well, back to the clone saga. What is everyone's favorite individual arc?
