Veteran actor of stage, television and screen, John Goodman has been tapped by Warner Brothers to portray Kilowog, an extraterrestrial being who befriends the superhero Green Lantern in the big screen adaptation of the comic book series of the same name. "Green Lantern" is slated for production for Spring 2009. The title role has not been cast, however, rumor is rampant that the shortlist of stars includes Ryan Gosling, James Franco, Jake Gyllenhaal and Josh Hartnett.
If true, Goodman will be the first official cast member of the film. One aspect as to why the role of Kilowog is cast so early has to do with the characters costume design. Originally planned to be a complete CGI creation, the creative staff has transitioned into making Kilowog played by a human actor wearing intricate prosthetics. Goodman will be fitted with these as soon as he signs on the dotted line. When asked why Goodman is a good choice to play Kilowog, Director Greg Berlanti said, "Well, he has the build, the loveable charm, the overbite and the stomach to pull it off." Oddly enough, Berlanti said this with a straight face and did not laugh.
