What is it about Green Lantern that several people seem to think it won't be made?

Back when Greg Berlanti was attached to direct, people were like "Without a proper director, I just don't see this movie getting made."

Then when Martin Campbell comes on board as director it's, "Unless they find their leading man soon, I just don't see this movie getting made."

Now that Ryan Reynolds has been cast as Green Lantern it's, "With this not starting shooting for several months yet, I just don't see this movie getting made."

When they start shooting, we're probably going to hear "Unless we see a trailer soon, I just don't see this movie getting finished."

Then when the trailer hits, it'll be "If we don't get a big media blitz following that trailer, I just don't see this movie getting released."

Again, it's not all that uncommon for a movie to not get finished.

I find it helps to just ignore the pessimism and hope for the best.

Maybe. Because if you dwell too much on that mentality, it carries right through the entire process of film hype, right up to release:

"If this doesn't break box office records, I just don't see this film getting a sequel."

Well, frankly, I don't plan on watching this movie. And before someone says it, because I feel like it and it's a public messageboard.

Yup yup. I am all about the wait and see aspects. So many people want a GL film yet a good chunk of those same people like to say it won't happen. I don't get it.

Just to add something, it wouldn't be the first time a movie is killed with a script, actor and director attached.
Well, it happened before that a giant meteor wiped the dominant species from the surface of Earth. It could happen again before June 2011.

I find it strange when people have nothing better to do with their time than hang out on message boards talking about films they have no interest in seeing.

Well if we had better things to do we wouldn't be on a message board in the first place. **** argument, step your game up. Don't you know who I am?:o

Yeah, while I somewhat sympathise with the stance of "I don't want to get too excited for this in case it all turns to crap", I can't say I particularly like employing it. It just seems a defeatist attitude to take, and one that's particularly prevalent amongst the fanboy community.

Like, during the build-up to The Dark Knight, people were like "I'm not going to get excited for it, because then I'll likely be disappointed, but if I go in expecting it to suck I'll be pleasantly surprised if it's good." And I'm seeing the same response to The Blackest Night over in the comics right now. Yes, if something's hotly anticipated, it doesn't always deliver on the hype. But the anticipation is half of the fun! Why deprive yourself of that? I say allow yourself to be excited during the build-up, then let the chips fall where they may come the pay-off. The site IS called Superhero HYPE, after all, not Superhero Jaded Skepticism.

I also find it strange when people feel the need to point out that someone is coming on a message board to ***** about a movie they don't want to see. Who cares.

Spending time on a message board talking about things that interest you is a perfectly natural thing to do, but spending time on something that doesn't interest you is a bit cracked.
Don't you know who I am?:o
Nope, and I don't care either.

I think his point was, if you're going to waste time on a message board, it seems a rather thankless, joyless waste of that time spending it on the board for a film you have no intention of ever seeing. It's the same reason I don't fritter the hours away on Twilight message boards talking about how I have no interest in the books, didn't bother seeing the first film, and have no plans of seeing the sequel.

But clarifying GL's post aside, I have no intention of getting into an argument on the subject. You're entitled to post wherever you want, provided you're not abusive to other members, which you haven't been.

Yes, because you've never talked about a movie, tv show or comic you didn't like on a message board. Again, please step your game up or move on.

And to clarify, I don't plan on seeing this movie, but I was interested in the casting of the movie because it was so odd and plan on following the production of it or lack thereof.:o

So you're interested in following the entire production process, and doing everything but actually see the movie?

That's like having sex that lasts for 2 whole years, and nobody comes. :csad:

Why can't he just be interested in the whole process of the film yet still have no desire to see it?

Yes, because you've never talked about a movie, tv show or comic you didn't like on a message board.
Of course I've talked about things that it turned out I didn't like. That's beside the point. What is on point is that I've never spent time talking about something I have no interest in seeing.

Anyway, you're not worth talking to. 'Bye now.

Why the hell do people think this won't get made? They have a leading man, director, four drafts of a script and they need a tentpole film and another DC franchise with a big budget. Everythiing is in place, everything seems confident enough to get moving. It's in January sure, but it's pre production. And it's even better. The more time means the more they can make a better film and screenplay. It's better for this than to plunge into it.

Yeah, they'll shut down a major film like this all of a sudden when they need a WB summer movie for 2011. How smart.

What is it about Green Lantern that several people seem to think it won't be made?

For me it's as simple as

1. This is WB

and

2. This is a superhero movie not named Batman or Superman

It's not specific to GL, but specific to the fact that it is not Batman or Superman. It's been so frustrating watching how WB handles their live action DC superhero properties. However, having the lead now cast is a definitely a big positive step in the right direction which is encouraging.

I think it's because the spectre of JLA:Mortal looms large over this (and all other planned DC projects) in a big way.
The way that movie seemed to implode made fanboys all around the world a lot wearier about "Go-projects"...
That movie more than any other showed us that a movie can have a director, a script, a cast and shooting date and STILL not happen.
