I watched The Last Man on Earth last night and absolutely loved it. I'll probably buy the novel in the next few days and read it. Hopefully this new movie will be close to Last Man in quality, even though they'll obviously be very different in tone.

I was looking around imdb, just waisting time, and I came across this thread. A guy claims he has two drafts written by Akiva Goldsman of I Am Legend. He says there's a pretty sizeable difference between the two, and he definitely thinks one is much better than the other, but he's not quite sure which one is the shooting draft. I've got a pretty good bull**** detector, and I think this guy may be legite. Anyway, I thought it was pretty interesting, and it'll give you some insight into what you may see in the film, if this guy is indeed for real.

Got stopped on my walk along Park Avenue by this kid wearing a walkie talkie. He said I couldn't walk where I wanted to walk because the street was being used as a film set. I could see they weren't shooting at the moment so I asked him if it would be cool if I just shot through real quick instead of taking the major avenue block detour. He was adamant about me not passing. I kind of wondered at the intensity of this little intern when he boldly shot out defensively: "This is for the movie 'I Am Legend!' It's only the biggest film of next summer!" I grinned and promptly turned around to begin the long detour. When I got to the other side, this was obviously the sight of the director readying himself for the big shot.

Johnny Depp Will Not Appear In I Am Legend

Remember the casting news that Johnny Depp had been cast in I Am Legend? According to our "on-set" source this rumor is pure BS, Depp never signed on and bottom line, he is not in the film.

Blackfilm reported the following: When Will Smith was cast as the lead in the long-awaited adapted film version of Richard Matheson's I AM LEGEND, it was probably the worst kept secret. After all, his name had been floating around the web for the longest time. Until certain outlets that folks feel are the bible of information put the word out to confirm our story, sources tell blackfilm.com that along with Smith, JOHNNY DEPP has been added to the cast. No telling which role Depp will play, but given his penchant for playing extraordinary weird-like characters, expect a juicy plum part, like the neighbor, now one of the living dead…According to joblo.com, a production source writes in to report that Depp would NOT be playing the role of Cortman/main villian in the film. Apparently that character (from Mark Protosevich's script) has been excised completely. Depp, we now learn, would be playing a fellow survivor that Smith's character finds named Philip.

The IESB can confirm that the Phillip character is not in this script and that this movie will actually be closer to The Omega Man film than the original 1954 novel written by Richard Matheson.

Gabrielle Union in I Am Legend

Gabrielle Union is set to reteam with her former Bad Boys II co-star Will Smith in I Am Legend, directed by Francis Lawrence (Constantine) and based on the Richard Matheson book.

IESB.net says Union will play Anna, a lone female survivor that Smith's character, Robert Neville, will come across.

The site adds that the only other character of any substance in the film is Ethan. This role has also been cast with a relatively unknown actor.

Warner Bros. Pictures will release I Am Legend on November 21, 2007.

While It's been kind of known that Depp won't be in this for a while, it still bums me out. And I don't like what they said about it being more like the Omega Man. I love the Omega Man, but I'd rather see something a little closer to the book. Ofcourse, it's probably more tone wise than story, but still. I'll still have Last Man on Earth for a closer version to the book, but even that wasn't all that it could be. But I'm still really looking forward to this. Everything I've seen points to this being a really cool movie. I just hope Goldsman pulled through with the script rewrite, because after just reading I, Robot for the first time, he really screwed up that movie.

It's regarded as one of the best horror novels ever and it was huge inspiration for both Dead Koontz and Stephen King.

I wasn't over the moon about Union joining the cast so i hope this new actress, whom i'm not really familar with, can elevate Smith's performance.

If they had cast Kimberly Elise or Regina King i'd be more certain of a good outcome.

Gotta say... I’m curious about I AM LEGEND because of how much I enjoyed the work Francis Lawrence did on CONSTANTINE. But if this is accurate, then I’m concerned they’ve “reinvented” this one to an unnecessary degree...

I'm a regular visitor to your wonderful site, and have some news to share about the much debated "I Am Legend" film.
They will be filming this Saturday, in my neighborhood, (the23rd) on 5th ave in Manhattan between 23 and 31st street.
BUT
here's the interesting part
According to the flyers taped around the block, "Will Smith plays Robert Neville, an Army doctor who stays behind on the island on Manhattan, after a plague forces the evacuation of the island. He is immune, and has stayed behind to find a cure..." (paraphrased)

Only Manhattan is infected? A doctor? Maybe this is just an "Omega Man" remake...

Ummmm... okay. What the hell is that? What's that got to do with anything "I Am Legend"? Just the island of Manhattan, now? A disease? A military doctor? WHA?

My god, why couldn't they just use the script that Mark Petros, uh, vich... Pietro... whatever his name is wrote? It was one of the most incredible unproduced screenplays I've ever read.
