I didn't think this movie will be anything like the book any way.The book is filled with him sitting around and thinking. If anything if they did the movie like the book it would be more of a suspense film than an action movie.

Weird, but true, story--

I went to a popular local comic book store last month (Oxford Comics, in the Buckhead district of north Atlanta), and who should come walking out just as I was walking in but Will Smith and Jada. Apparently he had bought up a bunch of anime DVDs and the store clerk later said that Will claimed he was doing "research" for his next role. Now, he might have been joking and just bought a bunch of crap for his kids, which I really hope is the case because I'm not too keen on a loud, ADD-type anime-esque version of I am legend.

Gotta say... I’m curious about I AM LEGEND because of how much I enjoyed the work Francis Lawrence did on CONSTANTINE. But if this is accurate, then I’m concerned they’ve “reinvented” this one to an unnecessary degree...

I'm a regular visitor to your wonderful site, and have some news to share about the much debated "I Am Legend" film.
They will be filming this Saturday, in my neighborhood, (the23rd) on 5th ave in Manhattan between 23 and 31st street.
BUT
here's the interesting part
According to the flyers taped around the block, "Will Smith plays Robert Neville, an Army doctor who stays behind on the island on Manhattan, after a plague forces the evacuation of the island. He is immune, and has stayed behind to find a cure..." (paraphrased)

Only Manhattan is infected? A doctor? Maybe this is just an "Omega Man" remake...

Gosh is this really taking the word adaptation to whole new level.

Hmm an live action anime Superhero movie. Aside from Matrix reloaded/Revolutions , this might actually be the second time i've heard of this.

But they soo need to work on that title. It sounds like a frikkin porno movie

I agree a name change would definately be appropriate at this point.
This is veering to far from the source material for my taste.
Still, it is an interesting concept and could be good, it's just no longer what I would have personally wanted for this film.

He left the project due to creative differences.


And i agree with the name change. There is only so much you can do with the title , but once you move away too much from the source material you can't keep the title of I AM LEGEND.
However now that i think about it , it can be kept if SMith finds out that the vampires have really taken over the world.

The only way this new plot point could be spun to my liking, is if yes, Neville stayed behind to find a cure, but before the end of the movie, he finds out the rest of the world is gone too. I would have it so that when the movie starts, he IS the last man on Earth, and through flashback, you find out that he stayed behind and found out at some point that he was the last left. Be it through discontinued radio contact or what have you. I wouldn't really like it if at the end, he walks off Manhattan island and finds out he's all alone that way, that's just so cliche. You never know what'll happen though, the plot decription was pretty vague and it was paraphrased, so it's possible that we didn't get the whole story.

So I'm guessing the "New Flu" plague has absolutely nothing to do with vampires. Because I don't think you'd call "contagious urge to suck drink someone's blood" a variation on "the flu."

I'm back.

Took 2 years to find a script worth reviewing, but it finally happened. I've read numerous screenplays during my retirement. I need to address one thing: the current state of American screenwriting. It's awful. For every Zach Helm (the next Charlie Kaufman), we have 10 idiots writing Scary Movie 5 or Bring it On Yet Again. Original voices are harder and harder to find these days. Just look at the Academy Awards last year, it was almost a big-budget Spirit Awards rip-off. Indie and foreign cinema have some very fascinating voices. Somehow Hollywood has lost it's edge in the past 5 years. No one seems to be making interesting and intelligent studio pictures. The bottom-line has taken over and the studio execs are scared ****less to green light anything remotely different. Thank god for the specialty divisions are doing something different. (WIP, Paramount Vantage, Fox Searchlight etc...)

Even though my tastes are pretty much indie these days, I still enjoy a big-budget spectacle from time to time. I've read 2 kickass high-profile 2007 screenplays. Goldsman's I Am Legend and David Goyer's Jumper. Hopefully I'll have the time to review Jumper before TIFF but it's an amazing ride. Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity) has another shot at starting a fantastic franchise.

I like Warner Brothers. They have four of the most intriguing films of the fall: The Departed (adored the script), The Fountain, The Good German and Blood Diamond. They've had a rough summer with Poseidon and Superman under-performing. Their 2007 line-up will be highlighted by I AM LEGEND.

ROBERT NEVILLE (Will Smith) is the last man on earth. He hunts down deers off Park Avenue in New-York City. During the day, he finds food and equipments to continue his existence. Before sundown, he goes back to his bunker residence awaiting daytime again. A former army virus-expert, he's trying to discover a cure for the virus that has mutated 90% of the population. Those 'infected' are allergic to sunlight and UV light. They eat whatever they can find. Neville is immune to the virus and uses his own blood to find a serum. He broadcast a message everyday on the radio to have survivors meet him at the South Street Seaport at noon. We flashback between Robert's memories of how the whole infection began and how he lost his family. Finally, one day he's had enough. He decides at the sundown to take on the whole infected army. (His idea of suicide...) Just as he's about to collapse from the evil onslaught, a young woman called ANNA and a boy ETHAN appear. Is he dreaming?

I need to say I've never read the legendary script that Mark Protosevich wrote or Matheson's novel. With that in mind, I'm not able to tell you how faithful the adaptation is. But I'll say this, it's a fascinating story. I like the script from beginning to end. Goldsman, who's usually either great or totally off, has managed to write a very strong storyline. It reminded me of the first half of 28 Days Later. I still think Danny Boyle's film is seriously flawed. The first half of that movie is KICKASS. It's one of the most brilliant piece of sci-fi cinema. Unfortunately, the whole military-castle second half is awful. It seriously sucked. Now imagine the first half stretched to 2 hours with a bigger budget, an amazing location (NYC instead of London) and more drama. That's I AM LEGEND for you.
