It was a sign. The daughter said something about a butterfly in the car in a flashback, later he saw the tattoo of the butterfly and he knew what to do.

It was a reshot ending that sucked.
Thanks.
It felt so out of place when I saw the movie.

What was the original ending?

Thanks.
It felt so out of place when I saw the movie.

What was the original ending?

We still don't know. A lot of people are saying that it was more faithful to the book, but the ending in the script that I read was:

[blackout]When the creatures get into the house, Neville can't find Anna and Ethan in time so he has to retreat down to the lab, like in the movie. He then puts on a quasi-last stand and takes a bunch of them out with machine gun and pistol fire as they bottle neck in the door. Eventually, the "Alpha" creature walks through, holding Ethan and Anna by the necks. He motions toward the female creature that was strapped down to the operating table. Neville gives the female creature to Alpha, and Neville gets Ethan and Anna back. Neville then goes through the whole "I can save you. I can fix this," speech. The creatures don't seem to care, but they do start to retreat. Alpha turns away and begins to walk away, but Neville grabs him and throws him to the ground, and proceeds to beat the bloody pulp out of it as he keeps saying "let me save you."

It then picks up the next morning. Neville, Anna, and Ethan are all in an SUV, they all drive over a bridge (In the script, it was revealed that one bridge was left standing as a last resort type deal. That was how Anna and Ethan got into Manhattan. I don't remember what bridge it was.) as they go toward Vermont. In V.O. we hear another radio message like we heard earlier, but this time it's Anna laving the message. I don't remember what it said though.

My primary computer, which has the script saved onto it, is getting fixed, but when I get it back, I can transcribe sections and verify this stuff. It's been months since I read the script, so I don't 100% remember the details, but that was about the gist of it.

Also, they seemed to have cut out an entire section of the script that takes place between the time that Neville does the whole Shrek scene with Ethan and the time that they're attacked. There's a good 10-20 pages where Neville takes them out into the city, where they get a whole lot of exposition and stuff done. You actually learn about what else happened in the world and what happened to Anna an Ethan leading up to the time that we finally see them. I know at least some of this was filmed because I saw some f it being filmed on a little blurb on Entertainment Tonight or The Insider or some such.

And a lot of other small scenes were cut out, probably because they would have pushed the movie into R territory. I remember one scene, after Neville gets back and has to deal with Sam after being infected, where Neville gets really drunk, and then pulls the knife blade out of his leg with a pair of pliers. He then heats it until it's red hot over a bunsen burner, and sticks it back into his wound in order to cauterize it. It was a real great little scene that I really wanted to see.[/blackout]

But we don't see it from Neville's point of view. We see it from a zoom. If it was in his mind, it was a poorly chosen shot. The only way it would make sense that it was in his mind is if we saw a long shot from Neville's POV in the car.

In the other shots when he is losing his mind a bit in the house, we see it from his POV.

I'm not saying that it wasn't in his mind, what I'm saying is it was shot wrong. That is, if it was supposed to be in his mind...which it probably was.

We did see it from his point of view...........it really isnt that complicated. And BTW Matt you need to put this in spoiler tags...

I'm almost sure it was a zoom shot. I asked my friend who saw it today and he said the same. You're right about the spoiler tag, I did it the first time I posted, but not the second. I apologize for that.

Again, I know you are right about your conclusion, but I am pretty sure it was at least a semi-zoom.

Also, in the house while going mad, we had the shaky cam effect and a weird strobe effect, that was not in the head/eye movement of the dummy.

To me it was just an editing error.

That scene was awesome...Will's sense of fear was so strong in that scene. You could feel how scared he was and the fact that he really didn't want to turn his flashlight on to reveal what he might see.

Stupid dog.

I think it might have worked better if that was the only glimpse we got of them for a while, and he didn't encounter them again until later. So people would have curiosity about them.

IMHO Best part of the movie.

Second best is putting Sam down.

I don't get moved by something unless i REALLY feel the characters pain, and Will did an EXCELLENT job at making me feel his pain and loneliness

some of you in this thread namely the ones ogling over a damned CGI vampire harpy chick need to get laid...

and preferably not by a relative.

In regards to this topic, I'm pretty sure we see it from his POV because it's shown through the side mirror on the SUV, as if we're seeing what he's seeing.

I would have enjoyed this movie if this had been the ending. Especially if it has the 'legend' aspect from the book:

With the zombies/vamps/infected being the main population of the world, they exchange stories of the 'monster' Robert Neville, who kills their kind. Telling these stories to their kids the same way people used to tell kids stories about boogeymen and jack the ripper and stuff.

The "Legend" we got was abhorably silly.

(Also, I have a different skin, so "blackout" hides nothing from me... mwahahaha!)

In regards to this topic, I'm pretty sure we see it from his POV because it's shown through the side mirror on the SUV, as if we're seeing what he's seeing.

If that's true, tham I'm wrong. Maybe the 'Objects in mirror appear closer than they are' might be the explanation of the zoom that I remember. But why not make it
obvious that he's losing his mind
. Why make it ambigous? If we are discussing it, it means that not everyone understood at that point
he was going mad.
In the house,
he sees the woman and kid and see's it in a strobe effect.
So in that case, it's obvious
he's losing his mind.

It doesn't matter, the whole head move/crazy or not doesn't deserve this much conversation. It was a cool sequence. I thought the movie was great until the
woman and kid show up.
After that it fell apart for me.

I saw the movie and it was pretty good. I read the book before and although it's not like it very much, the ending of the movie was pretty good. I liked it overall.

But why not make it

. Why make it ambigous?
Well, it was pretty damn obvious. I mean, he yells at and shoots down a mannequin and then loses it and fires the gun at the buildings. They're thinking that the audience would be attentive enough to know he's going insane, without having to flat out tell us.

Spoiler Alert!!!

But the mannequin was moved to a new spot. He knew something was wrong. He didn't just see it in it's original place and go nuts. He shot at it because he thought it might be a vamp, it was pale and weird looking. He didn't move the mannequin, so it's actually understandable that he would freak. Was it an overreaction? Yes. Was he losing it? Probably. But that wasn't my point. This whole thing started because I simply mentioned that the head and eyes seemed to move and I thought it was a zoom shot. It simply didn't feel like it was Neville's POV.

I enjoyed the movie. I didn't care for the ending too much.

The scene where his daughter and wife die in the helicopter crash, the say "Hello" with mannequin, and when he killed the Sam were all touching preformances by Will. I also liked how the vampires/zombies moved , I dunno there was something very intriquing about it.

I don't want a sequel.:o

The reason why the chose CGI for the " dark seekers " was because most of their movements were pretty much un-human like.

few examples
- bunch of the dark seekers crawling on the building
- trying to break through the bullet proof glass
- the leader jumping around the house, while Robert is trying to shoot it
- 3 vamps attacking Robert, where they fell from the building
see thats why

I finally saw this movie I must saw that I liked a lot. I'm now thinking about reading the book since so many people said it's better than the movie which is usually the case

This film was way too short to tell the type of story they were telling. Even though we're told it's 3 years later and you see all the pictures of Will's experiements you never actually feel like alot of time has passed. There was also literally no buildup to the end.

this movie is extreme short. but i guess they didnt want to risk and make a big profit.
which makes sense.

that is a good point , i am guessing a new lead or a prequel.

too short but good anyway. Will was awesome but the monsters sucked ass

Not sure if this was posted but I read a article about the original ending....
Will Smith, Anna and the Kid escape and drive into the sunset over the GW bridge...apparently not all of the bridges were destroyed, which is how she got there in the first place.

More on the ending and the scene with the Alpha Male screaming in WIll's face that was cut from the film.
In the trailer we see a scene where the alpha male comes very close to Neville and growls in his face. That scene wasnt in the film, right?
- Yeap, thats a scene from the original ending! They reshoot this ending in November for whatever reason and changed it totally. The user sith_happens quoted from the movie magazine Cinefex the following:

'Then, when Neville finally turns the alpha female over to the alpha male, there is this little love moment between the two of them. That was another very tricky bit of business to get just right.' Having secured what they came for -- the alpha female -- the infected spare Neville's life, and he, Anna and the boy leave Manhattan, hoping to find other survivors in the outside world. The last shot follows their car traveling over what is left of the George Washington Bridge -- a shot comprised of aerial photography and digital environmental elements."

So...
Neville lived in that script?
