I've never read the story, only seen the film version "The Omega Man". Are they in fact supposed to be vampires or mutants of some kind?

In the book they're vampires in The Omgea Man they were mutants.

They're pseudo-vampires in this movie. They drink blood and are allergic to sunlight, but stakes and garlic aren't needed to kill them. They're certainly more like vampires than the Omega Man mutants though.

Warner Bros. Pictures has launched the official website for director Francis Lawrence's highly-anticipated I Am Legend, starring Will Smith, Alice Braga, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Willow Smith and Charlie Tahan. The film opens in conventional theaters and IMAX theaters on December 14.
