Comics Official NEW EXILES Discussion Thread

^Once again, I agree(you're on a roll lol). We sure won't be getting any of that soon since CC has to write his precious Betsy. Here's hoping the next writer takes the book back to the way it used to be.

I don't really like the idea of previously known characters being members of the Exiles. It was one of my main peeves with World Tour, since it had people like Power Princess and Spidey 2099 join. I prefer the original approach of the early Exiles, whose only known character was Blink.

I wholeheartedly disagree. The late What If series introduced tons of characters that could be explored much further. I always prefer to give the spotlight to obscure characters that were already introduced, a great example of this is Thunderbolts.

Well, Claremont is promising to really shake things up. Seems like he's going to cull quite a bit of the team, and I for one look forward to at least that.

There's something to be said for What If? characters (Nocturne practically was one), because they had a single appearance. Characters with a real history behind them though? No. I liked Blink because she was unique, and I will say Miguel's warmed to me, but I don't really like the pre-established character routine with the Exiles.

Thunderbolts isn't really a good analogue, since its characters have all had multiple appearances before they appeared. The entire team's setup was also completely different. Different mission statement, different direction and different scale. Love it, but they're not the same... at all.

What I meant was that T-Bolts explored characters which we had barely seen. Sure, we saw Moonstone battling the Avengers, Hulk and Cap a couple of times, but it was in T-Bolts that we actually learned everything about her, about who she was, it is where she was defined as a character. It was the same with basically every other char in that book. That's what I like, when someone brings a character that had barely no development in the past and brings him/her into the spotlight, granting this char the same chance others have since their inception.

I can't wait to see what new additions he makes to the team and who he cuts.

Well, I will say I'm not terribly interested in his "Mystik".

And I like that idea too Sebita, but not with something like Exiles. The entire premise is based around new and exciting alternate realities. I don't necessarily want to see a pre-established character exploring those. That's what was great about the Exiles. They were all obscure characters, brought into the spotlight, but they were made just that little different.

The "obscure character getting fleshed out" thing works better in Marvel Team-up and Beyond.

Exactly (although I didn't really like Beyond). Exiles is the perfect ground for new characters to show their stuff.

Beyond was pathethic, the only worthy thing of the entire mini was Medusa saying her relationship with Black Bolt flourished because of their communication :p

I know where you're going with Exiles, but let's examine the originals... first we have Blink, who by far was NOT a newcomer, but like I want a rather "obscure" character with very little previous history. We have Morph, who in spite of his alternate origin, was exactly the same as AOA Morph. We have Nocturne, who debuted on X-Men Millenial Visions. And we had a Cyclopish version of Mimic... The characters were nowhere new or unheard of. And the premise is "Alternate Realities", not necesarily alternate realities we haven't seen :p I for one would love to see the alternate reality from What if 79 a bit more, or maybe the one in What if 12. Sure, create new worlds, but every once in a while drop in a what if world that was already created.

Beyond?????

I respectfully disagree.

Okay,... Deathlok got a leg up,... but everybody else,... MEH,... Medusa was dumbed down for this one,.. I can't even continue.................

I just meant that beyond would/should have been the better book to do that. Not that it was done successfully :D

Bey ond shouldn't have been done period. I almost barfed when the Space Phantom said Immortus had dumped him... please like we've forgotten he has armies of Space Phantoms at his disposal...

- Blink was not new, true.
- Nocturne doesn't count since all we really had was a picture.
- Morph was the same in personality, but his background was completely different.
- Magnus was an all-new character.
- Thunderbird was COMPLETELY different.
- Mimic was pretty much the same powerwise, but completely different personalitywise.

The follow-ups Sunfire and Sasquatsch were also completely different from their regular 616 counterparts. They were not necessarily "new", because they were based on previous characters, but they were "different", making them quite new and excited. Fleshing out their personality and history was fun. Titles with completely new characters like Exiles had to some extent sadly don't make it much anymore in the current comic world.

Alternate versions of pre-existing characters are who I wanna see the most on the Exiles team. Not necessarily a 100% new character.

Thing is, by being alterations of previous chars they're not necessarily new... And some books make it, I mean look at Runaways, or Young Avengers... those books rock :D

Back to Exiles... I just read 90-91 and color me excited :D This is everything I hoped :D Why did Psylocke join the Exiles? Well because she is bloody IMMUNE to PROTEUS powers just like Jamie Braddock said in Uncanny. It all makes perfect sense, Betts kicks Proteus behind all thanks to Roma... I can't wait, I love this :D

It wasn't very good, IMO.

:cmad:

How can you say this. Beyond! was pure classic awsomeness. It worked with several B to C listers, had continuity, and killed (Temporarily) a character I wouldn't have expected.

It was a throwback to classic Marvel storytelling, which made it a purely fun read.

It's not that characters are or aren't "new." It's that they're reinvented. Characters, for the most part, in the Ultimate lines aren't new. They're reinvented and reimagined.

And that's what Exiles did. And that's something Exiles no longer does. And that makes El B. a sad, sad panda. :csad: And I know it makes Spoons a sad, sad panda, too.

That's not to say that established characters won't work. Blink worked fine. I <3 Blink. Psylocke could work fine, too. At least it's not done arbitrarily, like Bedard's pick-ups.

So, I have to agree with Spoons and Harlekin. I don't want new. I don't want established. I want reimagined. Like Sunfire. Like T-bird. Like Mimic. Like Magik. Like Weapon X Gambit and, well, all those goofy and zany Weapon X members.

Sure...continuity... it makes perfect sense for Immortus to drop a Space Phantom and having him work for the Stranger...

It raped the characterization of pretty much everyone involved except Gravity and Deathlok.
