Days of Future Past Official Rate and Review DAYS OF FUTURE PAST - Part 1

I thought that's what we got, lol.

I enjoyed it a lot. 8/10.

I do wish the future X-Men put up a better fight against the Sentinels. These guys are supposed to be elite fighters, but they got their asses totally routed.

EDIT: Oh yeah, if I had to rank them right now;

X2
DOFP/TW

I may not agree with his overall rating at all, but I do agree Double B that the scene explaining the plan in the future was some pretty obvious exposition and the weakest bit of dialogue in the movie.

But this movie had a lot to explain to get the momentum going and, as much as I would have liked to see the OT cast, the film needed I shift to the past quickly since that's where the heart of the story is.

A disappointing 4. :(

See it a second time. It may change your perception.

I've seen it EIGHT TIMES. Considering how hard I was on this film before it came out, that's a miracle I guess. :csad:

However, I'm done until the DVD release. :o

I'm at 5. I will pass you, yet. :cmad:

I'm at 4. I think I'm taking an Edge of Tomorrow break this weekend (and watch Wolverine host the Tony Awards on Sunday), but I'm definitely good for at least one or two more after that. Probably on my birthday for sure. :woot:

After hearing from a few people how good X-MEN DOFP was, I decided to end my boycott of paying for any more X-MEN movies made by FOX, and went to see this movie (I caught a matinee). Be warned, there will be some SPOILERS in this post.

Despite the racebending of Sunspot (which I HATED),Bishop and Storm not having a huge part in this movie and being the first of the alternate future X-Men to be killed (which I HATED),Kitty having the power to send people's minds back to the past (which was a stupid and unnecessary change to her powers),and despite Quicksilver's real name being "Peter" instead of "Pietro" (which was an unnecessary change, but no big deal) I thought that this movie was surprisingly pretty damn good. Besides being a good story (despite not being completely faithful to the source material) this movie had one thing going for it that the other past X-MEN movies that featured Wolverine as the lead character didn't have, which is that this movie WAS NOT focused on Wolverine. This was not another installment of "WOLVERINE AND FRIENDS WHO OCCASIONALLY DO THINGS TO HELP OUT". Hell, Wolverine didn't even save the day by taking down the bad guys and was even quickly dispatched in the final fight with Magneto in the past.

I give this movie an 8 out of 10.

I hit 7 today. Another person asked me to go so I might do an 8th. I was gonna stop at 7 but it still amazes me everytime I watch it. So who knows lol.

Im not trying to be funny or sarcastic but that was the point had they done any better there would have been no need to go back in time.

My mom was in high school during the 60s and I've heard her talk about it a million times...everyone knew someone who was sent off to Vietnam, whether they were relatives or friends, and so many didn't come home, or came back all messed up. Turning 18 back then meant you or someone close to you was getting shipped off, and it was terrifying.

If you're a guy who has the voices of all of those people in his head during a time like that, it's going to mess with you.
Wow thats deep I wish they would have delved deeper into that.

A strong 11/10 imo.
The best X-Men movie.

1) DOFP
2) X2/FC
3) X-Men
4) The Wolverine
5) TLS
...) X-Men Origins.

I understand what the point of it was. I'm saying they could have put up more of a fight and really shown why the X-Men are who they are.

I recall one of the film makers saying that Sentinels could really only be taken down by being ganged up on by multiple mutants. That should have been in the film. Show Iceman freezing a Sentinel and then, before it can adapt, Colossus runs in and breaks it's leg off at the knee or something.

The mutants would still get picked off, but I just wanted more strategy.

I can't believe some people have seen the film up to seven times, lol. I've only seen it twice, which is a first for an X-Men film. I often see Marvel Studios films at least twice in the cinema also.

I've seen it at the cinema twice, which is an honour shared with only one other film

[blackout]The other was The Simpsons Movie...[/blackout]

I really enjoyed this one, I'd give it a 9/10 so it's on par with X2 for me. :)

That's a valid point, I think. We saw Magneto and Storm teaming up (though without a word being spoken between them), but that was it.

Especially with mutants with power over ice, fire and strength, you would expect them to team up a little more. Such as the scenario you suggested or Iceman freezing a Sentinel then Sunspot suddenly heating them up so they cracked and shattered from thermal shock.

And I understand but I think your talking about another movie altogether because that wasn't the focus.
Maybe the movie that would have come before this one.

Halo10's review of Xmen: Days of Future Past:

* I did like and enjoy Xmen: Days of Future Past; It started out of the gates very strong, fast, explosive, and exciting in the future timeline, and it immediately introduces some of the familiar current Xmen of past films,(professor X, Magneto, Wolverine, Kitty Pryde, Iceman, Beast)
as well as the new Xmen battling in the future. We particularly get to see new- to- the film Xmen characters- and a display of each of their individual powers;Bishop, Blink, Sunspot and War Path. An extra bonus for Xmen fans was finally seeing Iceman completely transforming his entire into complete ice-formand riding his icy-sliding board into battle against the new futuristic mutant-hunting Sentinels.

• Speaking of the Sentinels – I really loved the look and power-display of the Sentinels – both the 70’s modern ones, as well as the future ones.
The modern ones were capable of projecting machine gun fire am, possessing powerful strength and flight and ability to sense and identify mutants, while
the future ones not only possess same physical qualities but can also adapt/duplicate the power/capabilities of their mutant enemies and use that power to counter attack them.
In short if you use fire against them, they can counter with sub-zero freeze against you, ..if you use steel/strength against them, they use similar steel/strength vs. you, ..use sub-cold freeze vs. them/extreme heat temp. against you, etc., etc.,

• Truth be told, I got more pleasure out of the Sentinels and the character Quicksilver ( played by Evan Peters') than any others in the entire film, ..and that includes the leading character Wolverine. With the hyper-maniacal Quicksilver, he was to Xmen:Days of Future Past as was Nightcrawler was to Xmen:United.
He was quite a humorous delight as well as displaying his super-speed mutant ability, I admit that once his antics got going after introduction, I wanted to see evenmore and more as the film moved on.

• I was a bit surprised Storm did not have a bigger role in the film, (especially since it’s Halle Berry) and especially since there isn’t any more of Cyclops or Jean Greysince their demise in Xmen:Last Stand.
Instead we see the teen Kitty Pryde carrying a bigger role than Ororo (Storm) with her usual intangible abilityto “phrase” through objects, plus director Singer seeking to add “time-travel” abilities to Prydes’ powers in this film so that she can send someone’s consciousness back through time, (Kitty does not have such powers in comics), just as I was going to compare the whole “ time-travel/hero stops future cyborg assassin to the Terminator saga similarity” until this “consciousness-traveling” thing seems to allow some confusion.
I think it would have suited better to allow some ones’ physical body to travel (just like Terminator series does) vs. just their mind/mental consciousness run about in time while their body shell remains in another timeline.

• Beside the time traveling holes, there are just a few other peeves I had with DOFP, as it definitely isn’t perfect. They are times where I thought some plot issues could have been made clearer and explanatory, I thought it was quirky and anti-climactic at the very end with Jean Grey/Cyclops alive (spoiler) and I'm not quite sure the Wolverine/Xavier save the future ploy was quite put together and dramatic as thought it'd could have been. I thought it was confusing for Quicksilver to have a “walk-man” radio when they were not created in the early 70’s.

• And DOFP didn’t delivered the emotional-moving moments as Xmen:First Class or Xmen:United did. Not having as much flow and superb climatic ending as 1st class/X-United did.
And I thought it would have been much more emotionally moving and connecting to show more human abuse, suffering/anguish, tombstones of past Xmen vs. the very quick shot of a slavery line, body pile. The more that is connected with pain and sorrow displayed, the more empathized and get to me more motivationally revved up for the Xmen’s successful mission. Also, I couldn’t understand having a nude shot of Wolverine earlier in the film in a supposedly PG-13 film.,

• But yet there was still much to like about Days of Future Past. I thought it was clever not only to keep the assassination story around Mystique and Magneto (as was depicted in comics), but also include real past presidents (Nixon, Kennedy) into the mix (as opposed to Senator Kelly in the comics) and who appeared in both first two X-men films. In fact the film seem to be more headlined by Mystique/Magneto duo than Wolverine, Xavier.

• I liked the display of how Magneto as able to completely able to manipulate the enemy’s primary secret weapon, stronghold as well as another added massive feature display of his electromagnetic powers (that was somewhat similar to his enormous feats with a massive object in Xmen:1st Class) the Sentinel battles are the headliners, but there’s also individual great battles among Magneto, Beast, Mystique, Wolverine. In terms of pure fighting action, CGI special effects, makeup, costumes, etc, it is a special treat to see.

• “ Days of Future Past” also gives us a sight/experience of enjoying both old/young Magnetos of past Xmen-films, (Ian McKleenan/Michael Fassbender)as well as both young/old Professor Charles Xavier’s (James Avoy/Patrick Stewart) of past films. This was one of the magic offered by “ Days of Future Past” . I did like the 1960s’ -70’s look and appearances (without going too Austin Powers overboard) –automobile cars, hair-styles clothes-fashion, TV camera-appearances, etc.

• I thought Xmen: Days of Future Past was really good- but not classic-great – not one that its’ stamp in my mind as a legend. As you can imagine from earlier mention, I think I’d rate it the 3rd best Xmen film I’ve seen and i still rate Captain America:Winter Soldier, a better superhero movie, IMO. But take nothing away from DOFP, I still enjoyed it a lot and rate it high and it's
highly recommendable.

-By the way, please stay put until after the very final credits- an important being in near future Xmen films will be revealed.

• On a Scale of 1 to 10 - I’d give Xmen:Days of Future Past an 8.0

They were always going to bring Scott and Jean back. They're deaths (especially Scott's) were two of the most hated/bitterly resented aspects of the OT. If they hadn't have used the golden opportunity of a time travel/change the future plot to undo that idiocy, then a lot more people would have been ticked off. Heck, I pretty much called exactly how that was all going to play out months ago, it was that freaking obvious beforehand.

I saw this a couple days ago and it was so good I had to see it again tonight.

I should say before this review that I don't really follow the X:Men comics, so things that were changed from the comics aren't really a negative thing for me.

This movie blew me away and I never expected it to.

- The action was great. Sure, there weren't many long fights like in other CBMs, but the action was both cool looking and worked into the movie were it made sense. It was never there just because. It advanced the plot and was thrilling. The movie felt "actiony" but not overly so.

- For the most part, the mutants were all treated well and given important functions in the plot. They all got their moments and no one felt "shoehorned in." This movie is exemplary in that regard. Of course, not everyone got equal screen time, but everyone's screen time was meaningful.

- The casting and acting was amazing. I found they all fit their roles well, even the little dude who played Trask. The acting by McAvoy and Fassbender in particular was thrilling to watch, but everyone was great.

- The villains were truly menacing. I'm including Magneto, the sentinels, Trask and Mystique in this because they all acted like villains or anti-heroes at some point and they all were great. They felt like real and appropriate threats, but none of them were stereotypical maniacs. I find young magneto to be almost as good as Heath's Joker. He's so fun to watch.

- The ending conflict was amazing. In fact, it seemed so tense and so bleak, that I began to think this film would have one of those unhappy cliff hanger endings. I just couldn't see the mutants getting out of that one, but somehow it came together. Beautifully crafted.

- There was definitely genuine emotion and tension in this film. I felt for all the main characters (and some side characters too) and was actually on edge while mentally speculating about their resolution.

- There was comic relief, but no cheesiness whatsoever. That is so rare to find.

In summary, I don't have many negatives to assign to this film. So, I'm giving it a 9.5/10 and will vote 10/10 for this poll because I'm not even sure why I'm deducting the .5. Perhaps it's simply because no film is really perfect when you think about it long enough, lol.

I'm kinda confused at why some people are nitpicking the fact that Kitty is the one that phases people through time. Kinberg and Singer wanted to respect the source material the best they could with the constraints imposed upon them by the previous films so they put Kitty in Rachel's role. Yes, Shadowcat has never displayed the ability to phase people through time but I thought it was the best way to pay homage to the original storyline without actually having Kitty be the time traveler.

I also feel like the story wouldn't have had as much weight behind it if it weren't Logan going back because the a lot of the emotional weight in the film comes from the fact that the audience's perspective throughout the whole franchise in Logan, is going back to help the man who helped him so many years ago. The whole 'student becoming the teacher' aspect is what makes the film really great I think. Kitty has gotten next to nothing in this franchise but they lucked without with a spectacular actress in Ellen Page and they gave her one of the most prominent roles in the limited future scenes, and I think they did a great job with what they could of the Future cast.

The way I see Singer and the Xmen franchise is that when things click, as they did w.DOFP, you end up with a quality movie that entertains and is done smartly- but with that sAid I guess I'm in the minority because none of the Xmen movies have ever felt authentic. Im not a truest, I don't think movies should be bound by the comics and i'm in full support of movies taking liberties I just feel like none of the Xmen movies have felt like the Xmen i'm familiar with. The heart and essence of the franchise has NEVER been captured on film IMO.

Storm and Cyclops play such a huge role in defining Xmen to fans like myself and when Magneto and Mystique eclipse those characters thats a problem for me. I have seen the new movie twice and loved it but I can't imagine a third time, for me the second time was beter than the first but I still can't fathom seeing it five or more times- which is weird cuz Im a hardcore Xmen fan and have never read a single Captain America comic in my life but seen Cap2 six times! Cap2 has better repeatability for me.

I like the taste left in my mouth after this movie- Im more hyped about where the franchise is going but I dont have faith that these movies will ever feel like authentic stories of the Xmen I know and love. Nonetheless its great fun- I just pretend its a new movie w.no ties to Xmen and I find myself enjoying it more...
