Iron Man 3 Official rate & review IRON MAN 3 thread! - Part 3

IM3 is quickly becoming one of the more underappreciated CBMs of all-time.

What would you consider to be overappeciated?

I think there is alot of hyperbole reviews with this film but it's not very good either. I am going to give it a third go if it's on Netflix anytime soon.

Watched this movie a few times since its been on the premium cable channels.....this movie is really really good.... didn't care to much about the Mandarin, so it hasnt bothered me....but i just wanted to relive this to all the people out there...who loved it or not......this was an excellent movie....

Well for me, I think it's a lot more clever in it's writing than a lot of other CBM's. It's probably the only superhero film to really be more about the man than the hero. Hell, the whole trilogy can claim that imo.
It's social commentary is well done and presented with a lot more finesse than anything in TDKT (ya, I said it) and on top of that it's just a very well made movie. Well paced, well acted, funny, exciting and touching.

I've watched iron man 3 more than iM1 & IM2 maybe even combined. I've probably watched it as many times as avengers. When I saw it at the theaters I want sure if I loved it or just liked it, but I'll say after watching it a few times and getting over the Mandarin twist (which I wasn't exactly sure if I even cared about) that I love this movie. 2nd best comic movie behind avengers.

I watched this last month and was quite disappointed frankly; it seems like quite an overrated film.
The villain's motivations were too similar to what we'd already seen in IM 1 & 2, I didn't feel like "Extremis" was explained properly enough, having me pretty confused throughout the film. I feel like the action scenes could have been more exciting (my favourites were probably Tony saving Pepper as the house collapses and IM saving everyone falling from the plane). I get what they were doing with the Mandarin plot twist but I wasn't very keen on it; it seemed like they wasted the character.
RDJ was probably the reason why I enjoyed the film; his performance as Tony Stark is great as always.
However, I don't feel like IM3 carries itself as a pretty strong film like IM1 did. I only ever watched the first trailer that was released (back in late 2012) and refused to watch any more trailers after that because I didn't want to spoil the film for myself so I went in to watching IM3 with a pretty open mind and not knowing what to really expect. After having viewed the film, I went ahead and watched the final trailer to see if I was actually going to be spoiled by it but it turns out they didn't really show much, either because they didn't want to spoil the plot or because they actually didn't have that much interesting to show.
IM3 gets a 6.3/10 from me; I appreciate that its story is more about Tony Stark than "Iron Man" but I had trouble feeling engaged throughout the film.

Iron Man 2 and Thor 2 are the worst of the MCU IMO.

Im2 was a great flick. It had Everything the first had and more. Justin hammer was a great great character and provided great contrast with Tony while still being similar.

Thor 1 sucked. The destroyer was garbage.

Cap1 was boring. The story was hokey for the most part.

The first half of Captain America was great, a great tribute to serials and it's a shame the 2nd half was so rushed. Iron Man 2 wasn't more than the first film, Tony barely had an arc and the film needed more rewrites, with things aparently cut from the villain by the studio that made him more one dimensional, while the actor was aproached with the promise of making an interesting villain, and even aproached the character that way.

They may not be the absolute best , but I can pop those films in anytime and be entertained. I'd say even at their worst they are still miles above a lot of other comic films.

I really enjoy Iron Man 3. The Mandarin twist doesn't bother me but I can see why people are upset. If they did something like that with Joker or Green Goblin I'm sure there would be an outrage.

True. But the Joker and Green Goblin are great characters in their own right. Mandarin? Not so much. He's just the best villain in a really weak rogues gallery.

After various rewatches i actualy came to love Iron Man 3, it's one of my favorite MCU movie. The worst of the MCU has at worst been mediocre, but stil relatively entertaining, their worst feels like a product, but a decent one at that, they haven't made an absolute stinker like the Daredevil/ Elektra or Fantastic Four movie.

Iron Man and Captain America already got their oun movies that proved they could hold on a franchise (Iron Man 1 and Winter Soldier), hopefuly Thor 3 will be the charm for that character.

I rate Iron Man 3 a solid 7, if you're going to just make a fun summer blockbuster that isn't pushing technology or the way films are made like Avatar or Gravity, then this is how it should be, a clear and entertaining action packed film that doesn't insult, has witt and has fun with itself, but also has some more susbtext and is more complex and more meaning behind it when you look more carefuly. This is a similar case to Burton's Batman films or Die Hard.

When you dislike a movie or think it's overrated, you realy seem to like to use every single element to reinforce the idea that the GA didn't like it. I've been noticing the same with you when it comes to X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Here's some great insight on the movie

I understand why you'd get the impression. But it's not true, you don't see me arguing that the GA didn't like Skyfall or The Avengers or Pirates, etc etc etc.

Maybe, maybe not.

I think it has more to do with the fact that there's so much more to look forward to over the course of the next few years, but really, it happens with all of these movies. It's hardly something you can single out Iron Man 3 for, that's for sure. As fans, we're about as fickle as they come and are always looking forward to the next big thing if there is one.

The Man of Steel boards were all but abandoned in the wake of the BvS developments. Thor 2 doesn't get much love these days, either. *shrugs* Just the way it is.

FILM CRIT HULK on IM3.

I think i've come to like IM3 more than TWS and The Avengers. It's surprisingly smart and insightful film, as far as big budget blockbusters go. And it has an emotional depth too. Stark arc is fantastic and it's a superb portrayal of PTSD.

I see people say that it was too comedic, that despite his PTSD Stark was still too snarky and snappy. That RDJ was just playing Stark as he usually does. Yea sure. But that is NATURAL to his character. Different people deal with trauma's and tragedies in different ways. RDJs Stark was deeply tormented, but it would be unnatural for him to be a moping sad sack like Bruce Wayne.

I also love how genre savvy the film was. It took the tropes of the genre and threw cream pies at them. But it wasn't full on meta like the Jump Street films etc.

Oh good lord.
Maybe it's because
1) the movie is over a year old
2) the same studio that released IM3 has since released two more films in the past year, leaving us film goers with more recent films to talk about
3) said studio has two films coming out in the next year, one which features the titular character from IM3, which, once again, leaves us with a lot more things to discuss
4) there are many more films in production by this studio with several more characters.
Pick any or all of those reasons as to why this may be.

I understand why you'd get the impression. But it's not true, you don't see me arguing that the GA didn't like Skyfall or The Avengers or Pirates, etc etc etc.

That you don't deny obvious billion dollar hits does nothing for your case.

I think most people liked the film, I don't think it's super beloved or anything but I think most found it to be enjoyable.

I literally hate Im3 but realistically, I realize it did really really well at the box office. It was/is a very popular film. Folks just need to accept some stuff the dislike is popular.

Amazing. Except nobody's talking about Tonya Harding, the '88 Dodgers World Series win, or New Coke much either. Know why? It's old news, and everything that could be discussed, has already been discussed.

Which I am certain you already knew. But really, the movie is 14 months old at this point, and waltzing in here pretending it's reviled because the forum isn't seeing much action is a little juvenile and sad.

People are still discussing TDKT, MoS, and The Avengers.

As for "waltzing in" I walked into an abandoned forum and wrote a post 25 words long.

People still talk about the TDKT and the Avengers because they are the genres best.
And people are discussing MoS because
A) it's easily the most divisive comic book film in recent memory and
B) that's the only bit of DC there really is to discuss for the near future, whereas Marvel has put out two films since IM3 and will put out at least two more before the next DC film outing.
Anything else you'd like to say about the matter? It's cool that you don't like IM3 but to try and downplay a successful movie simply because you don't like it (which you've done before) is, as someone else said, sad and juvenile.
