Of course you can compare films released in Summer 2013. The audience crosses over, of course they will be compared.

These can be applied to any film. To say that people won't think any less of IM3 because Star Trek 2 turns out to be great....you must be in a vacuum.
Big summer movies get compared. Last year it was Avengers, TDKR.
This year it will likely be IM3, MOS, ST2. They are the biggest names coming out. You said it yourself that Star Trek 1 was better to you than the fireworks of Transformers 2. I think he's saying that many people will feel next week the way you felt a few years ago.
I actually feel the way you do, I own Star Trek on Blu-Ray and still watch it. That's the one I remember from that summer....not necessarily the biggest grossing film.
