Just saw it in IMAX 3-D looked great. I'd give it a solid B-, too many remote controlled Iron Men or my taste. It was definitely funny, almost too funny. The whole Mandarin thing was also a mess. Waaaaay better than IM2.
Watched it a third time this past week, and while the flaws are a little more apparent it's still my favorite MCU film thus far, I also saw Star Trek...and it's clear it's going to take a huge bite out of anything IM3 earns from now on.

It's great to have done that . At least , he explained why he couldn't change the origins of The Mandarin and why he chose that twist .Also, thought this was interesting. At an IM3 screening, Shane Black gave upset fans the floor to voice their criticisms and had an open discussion with them. Sorry if it's been posted already:

It’s a shame every fan making outrageous accusations about the film and claiming hyperbolic “injury” to the source material and themselves etc couldn’t have been there to engage in this back and forth with Shane Black. It was great to see, and would go a long way toward helping other fans understand and appreciate the brilliance of what he accomplished in Iron Man 3.
Then go ahead and report me to a mod if you're so sure that I'm trolling instead of giving yet another juvenile response.
on the twist of "The Mandarin" in Iron Man 3? He's not critical at all.
In Australia, Aboriginal artists, every generation goes in and repaints the cave paintings. And they all tell the same stories over generations. And that's what we do. The human species tells the same stories over and over again. Stories of heroes and villains. And I think we have to update them for each new generation. "Any fans who cling on to maybe a version of something they read when they were children are really just hanging on to a past. The world's moved on. There's new children. They want their version of it. So I think it's very important to freshen these things up and to update them and to move them forward and to look at them in the context of all the things we're interested in now."
i see myself watching iron man 3 every christmas from now on![]()
Okay.
I'm going to just leave this here, too: Grant Morrison weighs in on the Mandarin Twist uproar.
But if you need an open discussion to make people understand how brilliant your film is, doesn't that mean you...I dunno kinda failed ?
It's like the brilliance doesn't speak for itself then.
I doubt anything Shane Black can say can change the minds of those who simply don't perceive it as brilliant. If you don't like it you don't like it.
It's looking less likely that STD will affect Iron Man Three's earnings in the international market. Star Trek has never been popular overseas and that trend continues. Abrams' film is already underperforming in Asia & Australia and looks set to do the same in most markets. In other words, STD is doing the usual Trek belly-flop OS and will rely on its US gross to bolster it. But its legs will be broken in its second weekend by Fast & Furious 6 and The Hangover 3, plus a tug from Epic on the side.
Meanwhile, IM3 will be cruising past $1B WW/$300M DOM by the time STD even opens here. Now worries for The Golden Avenger on that front.![]()
A couple of posters asked me a few days ago about which reviewers compared Kingsley's Mandarin to Heath Ledger's Joker...
"Ben Kingsley is utterly fantastic as The Mandarin, and I'm going to have to steal David Edwards' brilliant summary when I say that he's probably the best villain since Heath Ledger's Joker."
http://momentumpublishing.co.uk/film-review-iron-man-3/
"The Mandarin! Ben Kingselys bad guy portrayal is up there with Heath Ledgers Joker!"
http://www.kzone.com.au/big-screen/bonusreviews/iron-man-3
"Hes perfectly written and portrayed and is one of the best superhero villains since Heath Ledgers turn as The Joker but for completely different reasons."
http://www.columbusunderground.com/film-review-iron-man-3-nh1
"But let me tell you, hes brilliant. His turn as this villain is up there performance-wise with Heath Ledgers turn as The Joker. He is that iconic."

There were a couple more. Well, in their defense you can at least say that Kingsley's Mandarin has indeed become something iconic, though for all the wrong reasons...

Well that sucks...cus it's a better film.
Kinglsey facade-Mandarin wasn't even around long enough to make the kind of impression Ledger's Joker did, IMHO.
That's your opinion.![]()
Trek has simply never caught on in the OS market. Someone on another forum said that it's seen as more of a geeky thing, whereas Star Wars is viewed as being "cool". While STD will definitely better the first movie's $128M OS gross, it's not going to be a major earner. On the other hand, FF6 will do very well OS once it comes out, but that's not for a few more weeks.
