Jack Sparrow with consecutive wins over Superman and Spidey. The two biggest comic icons beat two years in a row that really sucks.

Well, it hasn't happened, yet, you know.

I wouldn't be shocked if it beat out Spidey, but if it doesn't, that would be awesome.

Wow, I didn't expect it to outdo SM3 on screen count given that Shrek and SM3 are still out :wow:

When you consider Spider-Man 3 opened on only 10,500 screens, it was not a holiday weekend, and it did $ 161.4 It's 1st 4 days, imagine what POTC 3 will make this 4 day weekend. It will be unbelievable. Then when you add in overseas. We may well see an oppening weekend of close to $ 400 WW. :wow:

A lot of factors there pointing to a huge beginning. I wish all films came out on a Friday so we could compare them like for like over the 1st few days. :cmad:

Saw Pirates last night. It was like peeking into your neighbors window while they are engaged in kinky sex. Not always sure what's going on, but the laughs were a plenty, and the exciting parts, were well just really exciting. It was fun, if you didn't try to figure out the plot. Jack in Davey Jones Locker was hillarious. Dress up as a pirate, stand in the middle of the desert, and take mind-altering drugs. Hilliairous. Depp was great as always. It was fun, crazy, zany, and worth the money.

EARLY THURSDAY ESTIMATE: 'Pirates 3' grabs $17M for all-time 6th-best Thursday; 4 1/2-day take should be in the $160M-$180M range!

by Steve Mason

FRIDAY AM: My studio sources are telling me that Captain Jack Sparrow has sailed to a phenomenal $17M in Thursday night business giving it, unofficially, the 6th-biggest Thursday in movie history – and Buena Vista didn’t allow screenings until 8pm! $17M is Disney’s early number, which means that it will almost certainly be adjusted upward at some point. Competing studios are telling me that the actual number may be in the $18-$20M range giving it the all-time 5th-best Thursday.

The $300M+ Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End has gotten a huge jump on the 4-day Memorial Day weekend at a record 4,362 locations. I’m told that the 4 1/2 day take is a cinch for $160M and could go as high as $180M. When it's all over, the Spider-Man 3 (Sony) 3-day record of $151M will be safe, but AWE will be the new all-time Memorial Day weekend champ blowing past current record-holder X-Men: The Last Stand.
Updates all weekend as more numbers pour in.

COOL STUFF, HERE'S HOPING THE WEBHEAD KEEPS HIS RECORD!!!:D:up:

Wow! The loser this summer thus far: Shrek! I know its doing good but had its release not been sandwiched in between these two, it would have done so much better.

Saw POTC 3 last night ( I loved it thank God it was so much better than 2) I don't get why the Critics hate it so much .

BTW HERE'S HOPING The WEBSLINGER Hold's on to his opening day record .

Thursdays #'s are in. $ 1.7 million. POTC 3 $ 17 million. Updates below.

I hope so, too. However, I myself didn't like AWE, so I can understand the dislike.

SM3 has opening day record in the bag still as Pirates opened on Thursday. The $17 million is impressive but I suspect it will hurt their three day gross given that some people (myself included) are not planning on seeing it until Monday.

Which I think means it might make a little less for the traditonal 3 day weekend count, which is what matters for records. I am hoping that POTC3 makes about $140 some million in those three days but it will of course nab the 4 day and 5 day recrods.

Aloha,
Okay gang, let's stay focused on our guy. Spidey 3 has now done 289.6 million domestic based upon Thurdays numbers and $756.6 million WW.The foreign market seems to be growing for this franchise.By Friday- Saturday the latest -we're hitting $300 million domestic:yay: One little issue-if you are rooting for Spidey to keep the records that he's gained-why on Earth are you going to the three day opening of ANY OTHER MOVIE? I'm not saying you shouldn't go just not in the first three days. Now is the time to start going to see Spidey 3 whenever possible. Bring friends, family dates or by yourself.
Spidey rules

I'm actually not going to see POTC3 for about a month, just to help keep Spidey on top just for a wee bit longer... :)

Prob couldn't find a ticket anyway. They are sold out at the local multiplex here thru Thursday. 14 showings a day.

Wasn't planning to, but my wife's cousin was in POTC3 (an extra mind you) and wanted to catch a glimpse of him..
To do $17M (est.) in 4hrs shows a lot of strength, and as much as I am rooting for spidey, I think POTC3 might reclaim the 3 day record, based on how packed the theatre was and a relatively sold out weekend..!!

When it's all over, the Spider-Man 3 (Sony) 3-day record of $151M will be safe

That's what I thought, but boxofficemojo is listing POTC3's Thursday as day 0 and will start day 1 on Friday just like Shrek 3's day 0/Thursday and day 1/Friday. So if POTC3's Friday-Sunday is better than Spiderman 3's, then it will have won both the opening weekend record and 3 day gross record. I'm pretty sure that even with Spiderman 3 and Shrek 3 competing with it, POTC3 will do 151+ during those three days.

No POTC3 officially opened on May 24. The adds said that and the previews. Sure at 8 pm, but by doing this they made breaking the record harder. I also think competition and the fact that Monday will see some people waiting until then that it could hurt its chances.

But I think it is clear POTC3 will make more money in the long run.

actually POTC officially opened today...thursday were considered early screenings...just like Spider-Man and shrek had midnight screenings...POTC had that as well as 8 PM screenings. It's opening day total will be calculated based on how much it makes today...

Spider-Man made 10 Million from its early screeings...and POTC made 17 Million so i have a feeling that SM 59 Mil opening will be broken...

^Yea I am going to have to say Pirates will either be extremely close or just right over Spidey's record.
