here are my predictions. i'm no newbie to box office numbers either.
1.) Spider-Man 3 $500M
2.) POTC 3 $400M
3.) HP 5 $300M
4.) Shrek 3 $270M
5.) FF 2 $260M
6.) Rush Hour 3 $250M
7.) Transformers $200M
It's like the other movies don't exsist this summer, because all I hear people talk about is SM. The anticipation is more than the first movie, mainly because of the symbiote story.
I think I'm being generous with the $400M. A good portion of the people who've seen the 2nd movie were disappointed. They'll be in no hurry to see the third one, which is basically just some more of the 2nd one. I've yet to see anything promoting the movie in the REAL world, not internet, which I had to search for.
The HP movies have a generally upward trend with the exception of the 1st one. So, the fifth will end up with a gross a little higher than the 4th.
First time in box office history an animated franchise has released 3 movies and there's a reason for that. You just can't milk movies like this. The story suffers right when you get to the third one, there's really nothing else to tell as far as these animated characters are concerned, and the trailer proves it. They used all their material in the second one and it was really successful because it had no competition, and it came around when people were desperate for something good at the box office.
This is gonna be one of the suprise hits of the summer. I'm really suprised the 1st one made that much, seeing as how almost every critic hated it, but guess what, the general public loved it, and they'll be in line to see the 2nd one. I went in expecting to be disappointed, but it was a very entertaining movie. Most people have been very impressed with the sequel so far. It has an epic feeling and LOOK to it that the 1st one lacked. The way I look at it, the first one could've hit $200M if the critics didn't persuade people not to see it. So $50M more isnt really that much.
Another suprise hit. Mainly because people have forgotten how big the second one was. It was the biggest comedy opening ever when it opened in 2001, and went on to make $226M domestically. Having it at $250M for this year is not far fetched at all.
Not much I can say about Transformers. $200M is about the default gross of a first time summer hit.
