Deltoro soudn respectful of the movies before but ha ssome ideas that are effects differantly. But Weta did such an amazing job on Lord Of the Rings cgi wise why mess with that too much.
Its good to hear he has spoken with Ian McKellan and has decided to keep core things in tact.
I can guarantee you Guillermo del Toro has no plans of "messing" things up in any way, but he is a different person than Peter Jackson, and he's going to approach some things differently. That's the whole point of having someone else direct these. If they wanted someone to do things exactly like Peter Jackson they either would have just gotten him to do it, or got a no name director that they could push around to do things the way Jackson did them with no vision of their own, but Guillermo del Toro is an established director with his own vision, but can also stay respectful to what came before him. That's why people were so excited when he was first rumoured.
Frankly, I agree with him, also, that directors overuse CGI these days. The thing is, it seems a lot of directors are forgetting that there are benefits and drawbacks to any type of special effect and, ideally you have to weigh those out and find out which works best
scene by scene and not "movie by movie," and del Toro understands that. Sure, CGI may work in one scene, but in another it may end up looking too fake and pasted on, and it would be better to have something real for the actors to work off of so it may be better to use costume work, or even animatronics. You can really see the benefits of this kind of thinking in Blade II where all three techniques were used to great result. Just to give you an example of each: The reapers were, for the most part, regular people in heavy makeup, and that worked for the most part, but there were other scenes, where one would be chopped in half and then just the torso would be attacking soemone so he used a puppet instead, or a scene where there were doezens of reapers crawling all over the ceilings and stuff so they were CGed in. You've got to focus on what works best at any given moment, and that's a unique ability that he will be able to bring.
