yeah, he like to use make-up work and animatronics more than CGI so I can see him not using as much digital stuff as Jackson.

Del Toro's animatronics have looked good so far.
not as good though as the CGI in LOTR. Del Toro's stuff all has a certain look, like you see a creature in a movie, and you can tell if its a Del Toro movie

good, that's supposed to happen, you should be able to it's a Del Toro film and not a Jackson copycat.

I am looking forward to the second Hobbit movie more & more. It will be amazing to see all of the cast return again if they can pull it off

Some of the CGI in LotR has already outdated. Like the bridge collapsing in FotR. But I guess we were talking about creatures not CGI in general?

I wonder if aragorn and legolas will be in the second movie. Heck maybe they'll be in the first one, legolas should be he's thranduil's son.

Exclusive: McKellen talks The Hobbit
Sir Ian on Tolkien... and Magneto

Guillermo Del Toro, the loveable big-mouth that he is, may have already confirmed that Sir Ian McKellen is set to return as Gandalf The Grey in his two-movie adaptation of The Hobbit - but in the ever-changing world of moviedom you just can’t believe what you hear until it comes from the horse’s mouth.

So, on spotting The Lord Of The Rings star at the UK premiere of Speed Racer (no, we don’t know what he was doing there either), we grabbed him for a quick chat.

“Yes, it’s true,” he said. “I spoke to Guillermo in the very room that Peter Jackson offered me the part and he confirmed that I would be reprising the role. Obviously, it’s not a part that you turn down, I loved playing Gandalf.”

So he’s happy to be back in the robes again?
“We talk occasionally and he’s looking forward to coming out of retirement, yes,” he said. “Guillermo will be getting around to starting the script in about six weeks when he’s finished filming Hellboy 2.”

The major question on everybody’s lips is what are they going to do with the second film, which takes place directly after The Hobbit and before Fellowship of the Ring?

“Well I’ve read The Hobbit so I’ve got a good idea of what the story would be,” said McKellen. “But as to how it’s going to work over two films and what going to happen on screen, well Guillermo has not got down to working out the major details yet – I can tell you it’s going to be amazing though.”
While on the subject of big-screen returns, what are the chances of McKellen re-appearing as the Master Of Magnetism in the long-mooted X-Men spin-off?

“They are making a Magneto spin-off but I don’t think it will involve me because it’s about the younger Magneto, it’s a back-story.”
But surely with the anti-aging special effects employed in the third X-Men film he could well reprise the role, at least for a cameo?

“Would I be willing to return to play a young Magneto? A cameo in my own movie? I don’t think so,” he said. “I don’t think I could get away with playing a 19-year-old.”

Man these movies will be great.
I can't wait for them to be finished lol GEEZ the next few years are gonna drag lol

Well we do have Indiana Jones 4 and TDK this year and maybe Transformers 2 and Wolverine will please us in 2009. I wouldn't write off The Narnia movies Prince Caspian looks really good.

Yeah I know but the films I'm REALLY looking forward to are the Hobbit Films and Thor...need I say more?
It stinks Marvel's holding Thor back until IM an Hulk are out, and I'm hoping with The Hobbit being made, Thor won't be far behind since Thor is supposed to be LotR/300 kind of a film.

Don't get me wrong I want to see the other films but I'd Like to see Thor on the Big Screen.

I hear you Vartha but if I was Marvel I would be doing the same thing, they dont have and unlimited amount of money like Warner they have what they have and they spent good chunks on IM and Hulk, they NEED a return. Glad McKellen is back on board. I will see it for just him. lol

It's usually easy to tell the difference between animatronics and CGI. Because of that...I like CGI just because...even if I can still tell it's CGI...the movements are at least more realistic. Animatronics are getting REALLY impressive...but they still have that stiff, robotics appearance to them.

Yeah, but these movies look really good and are bound to get them there money right back

Who should play Bilbo? Ian Holm is probably too old for the part.

I think that's the biggest question here. Well, casting in general.

I assume we're going to get someone in his 20s-30s as Bilbo, since that's how old the actors for the main Hobbits were in LOTR. Maybe we could see a "flash-forward" cameo by Holm, as he sits by the fireside writing There and Back Again, or something like that, but other than that Holm's probably out.

I also assume we'll get the same actors for Gandalf, Gollum, and Elrond (are these confirmed?).

McKellan and Serkis are confirmed but haven't signed contracts yet. I haven't heard about Hugo Weaving but I hope so.

I remember hearing/reading something about some of the Hobbit actors having cameos as their LOTR characters' relatives. Obviously this could easily be pulled off, but I was wondering if anyone remembers the Hobbit book well enough to tell me whether folks like Drogo, Paladin, Saradoc, and the ol' Gaffer were mentioned?
I also wouldn't be opposed to cameos by John Rhys-Davis and Orlando Bloom. Gimli and Legolas weren't in the Hobbit necessarily, but their respective fathers were, so they could easily fit in, I think.

That said, I don't want the movie to become cheapened by cameos. However I think it would add some visual and spiritual continuity.

If Holm cannot reprise Bilbo look no further.

Michael Hurst (man on the right obviously) ;)

Hurst is a talented actor and has been active for many years especially since Hercules and Xena. He's also a Shakespearean actor and is also at the right age seeing as he's currently 50.

There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Peter Jackson is aware of his talents. Well of course he is. That is a no brainer for sure.

As for the cameos in the film, I've always supported Legolas appearing in the film seeing as he's the son of Thranduil. And there's no doubt that he can also take part in the Battle of the Five Armies. I suppose he'll end up pulling off some crazy stunts like in LOTR if that be the case.

As for events in the second film, somebody over at TORN brought up the dwarf Balin leaving Erebor for Moria to start a new chapter for them. Surely they can't leave that out seeing as the Fellowship came upon his tomb in the first film. This second film could show the battle that would eventually claim their lives. I believe one of the other dwarfs joined Balin. It was Oin I think.

50 in human years is not the right age to play a 50-year-old hobbit though. Bilbo will need an actor in his 20's, maybe 30's. :cwink:

I agree. We gotta remember that 33 for a hobbit is equivalent to 18 for us humans, as the coming-of-age year. So 50 is still very much in the prime of a hobbit's life.

Elijah Wood at age... 18, 20, was it? was probably a little too young for Frodo, but only a little.
