I wonder how they'll bring Smaug to life. Hopefully we'll get to see Del Toro's use of practical effects rather than cg. Would that actually be possible though? The only large scale practical effect critter I can recall is the Spinosaurus from JP3 and at times it looked pretty fake.

Petition for Leonard Nimoy to make a cameo as a bard in Mirkwood? :applaud

YES! Brilliant idea!

Del Toro and Jackson would never allow "The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins" to actually be heard in the movie, but a quick shot of Nimoy strumming a lute would be awesome. :woot:

Bard is middle aged make Nimoy the voice of Smaug would be awesome though. Smaug should be Deltoro type in cave and turn cgi when it leaves cave and attacks lake town.

I'm pretty sure he meant a bard, as in a singer/narrator/poet, and not Bard the Bowman (an actual character from the Hobbit).

Hmm... I'm likin that Leonard Nimoy idea. He'd make for a killer Smaug.

Watched The Fellowship Of The Ring for the first time in A LONG TIME last night and reallt forgot how superb it really was, one of the best movies ever.

Despite being a HUGE GDT fan, I actually kinda wish PJ was still directing The Hobbit movies.

Why do I keep getting the feeling that James McAvoy will be cast as Bilbo?

^Not neccessarily, who knows what unknowns are out there who could play the role. But IMO he will get the gig. I didnt even realise he was in contention until i read a few pages back, yet I have been thinking he would get the gig for a while.

I make it a habit to watch the Lord of the Rings trilogy at least three times a year and the Star Wars saga at least four times a year, haha.

Hey, random, does anyone in here know how to write in Elvish? I decided that I'd really like an Elvish tattoo of the word "passion."

I would love to do that, but just dont seem to find the time anymore, I work different shifts every week so that doesnt make it any easier, throw in exercise and social activities, its hard to find the time. But I intend to watch the trilogy at least 3 more times before The Hobbit comes out.

I have all the extended cut DVDs, which are great if you watch them in episodic chunks, but there is no way that I would ever find time to watch any of them from beginning to end in one sitting.

I am looking forward to an approach to the creatures of Middle Earth that is (hopefully) a bit less "SCARY MONSTER!!!" than P. Jackson's. I liked his visual style, but he did ramp things up somewhat in order to demonstrate threat. For instance, in the books, the Orcs are smaller and weaker than humans, and are demonstrably intelligent beings. Jackson turned the majority of the Uruk Hai into roaring, braying, 6" + Predator-creatures, however. His Wargs were more like hairy Rhinos, also. I hope we see the Goblins of "The Hobbit" being Goblinish- wiry and sneaky, cruel and sardonic. I like the idea of the Goblins of the Misty Mountains being quite militarily basic, as well; carrying old scimitars and hide shields, and wearing cloth and furs. The iron plate and leather armour of Jackson's Moria Orcs seemed a little advanced, to me.

^I know what you mean, I managed to watch TTT (the extended cuts are THE only cuts IMO) tonight, 2 days after watching Fellowship, god knows when i will have the time to watch ROTK, especially with the EE being 4 hours long.
