I'm okay with him redesigning the Wargs. Didn't really like how they were portrayed in Jackson's movies.

I am looking forward to an approach to the creatures of Middle Earth that is (hopefully) a bit less "SCARY MONSTER!!!" than P. Jackson's. [...] Jackson turned the majority of the Uruk Hai into roaring, braying, 6" + Predator-creatures, however. His Wargs were more like hairy Rhinos, also.
Excellent! Great minds think alike! :cwink:

time to get this thread back up and going

So what's the deal with the Wargs? They're being redesigned? (Please forgive me, I just came across this thread.)

The Hobbit Films to Shoot for 370 Days

BilboHobbit.com has posted a transcript of Hellboy II: The Golden Army director Guillermo del Toro's recent chat on BD Live, concentrating on the questions asked about the two "Hobbit" films. Here's a few:

Q:There any professionals who worked with you on Hellboy II that will be joining you on the Hobbit?
A:Hopefully Mignola, Barlowe, Spectral Motion, Guillermo Navarro and others…

Q:Will there be any cool creatures in Hobbit like Hellboy 2?
A:many many more and we will be pushing the goblin kindgom. we will be pushing smaug, the spiders of mirkwood. we will be pushing them to the edge of technology where we will fuse animatronics and cgi into a seamless new art form in creating creatures, i think.

Q:When does filming for The Hobbit begin?
A:it will begin in 2010 and we will shoot for about 370 days or so…

New Line/Warner Bros. is planning a December, 2011 release for The Hobbit and a December, 2012 release for its sequel.

I think it's unlikely the cast returns... Mckellan will be WAY TOO old... I mean it's been over ten years... that's too long.

He'll be in his early 70's, I think. That's not terribly old. He won't be doing any stunts, that's for sure.

Well this will pan out well won't it?

Shooting the prequel to a trilogy more than 10 years after the trilogy.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

He is talking comparing it too Star wars.

Oh...I see. Still, There's too much good talent involved in this project, fresh talent one could argue. it's not like Lucas writing and directing the PT.

filming starts in 2 years? holly s......

Well, it really depends on when in '10. If he means december, then yes, filming starts in two years. If he means january to march or something, then its just over a year.

Either way, I cant wait for it. LOTR was one of the most enjoyable moviegoing experience in my life so far. Whoever it was that was compairing this to the Star Wars prequels needs to remember two things:
1. This isnt George Lucas milking his franchise for all its worth, by creating a ****ty prequel. The Hobbit actually existed prior to LOTR. And more than that, people actually like it.
2. It's Guillermo ****ing Del Toro!!!

Agree with everything that LOUD SILENT MAN just said!

Whoops, forgot I had posted here.

I wasn't comparing this to the SW prequels. My point was that they're putting themselves at a disadvantage by shooting the prequel, meant as a pre-existing story before the trilogy, not just to fill in the gaps (like so many prequels), 10 years after the original story was told.

It's not that big a deal, but on the whole I just don't like prequels, I think they're pretty useless, it's like finding out the ending to the book, things lose effect when you know Mr X and Mrs Y are in no real danger here because you have read about them at the end of the book.

Not that big a deal, but I think these 2 movies will be known as "those LOTR prequels" rather than stand alone movies. Maybe I'll be wrong, I hope I am, but I just can't shake the feeling.

Well, the fact is that the Hobbit book already existed as a prequel so this isn't like a prequel that someone simply cobbled together just to make more money.

As for McKellen being too old, Gandalf really had just a small role in the Hobbit, not like he did in LOTR. It wouldn't in theory be anywhere as physically demanding. :)

alright! 370 days of cinematic gold, ive been waiting for this movie to be made for soooooo long

if Michael Caine (75) can play Alfred, then Ian McKellen can DEFINITELY reprise his role as Gandalf.

btw, did i read right? Guillermo wants to bring Mignola on the Hobbit for some concept art???

For starters there is no artist who does art concept art that would not wanna be involved in art from a tolkien novel. But lets face it the artist who was in LOTR will be back with Mignola.

As for the wargs Peter Jackson himself said he wished they could have turned out better but due too budget and time they used what they had.

oh i'm not complaining or anything. i think it's great. Guillermo seems comfortable working with Mignola so more power to them!! i'm sure they've already got John Howe and Alan Lee (the 2 main artists from LotR) but Mignola being involved would be the icing on the conceptual cake.

as for the wargs, i didn't mind their design.....they just needed to be rendered better. better lighting, textures, fur, etc. if they end up redesigning them, then it's probably for the better anyway.

I believe also a person could say the Wargs in The Hobbit could be differant cause it was 50 years earlier and they could look like wolves which what they were.

Evolution doesn't work that quickly, but they could just be different breeds. After all, the Wargs of The Hobbit were more feral, allied to the tribal Orcs of the Misty Mountains. In the LOTR movies, the Wargs are used by Saruman's troops, who were well equipped and led.

:up::up::up:

This sounds great. But far too long a wait :(
