According to that casting call we are going to be getting a romanctic sub-plot with some Elves.
Hopefully the actor cast as Bilbo is toward the later of the desired age range and the lack of Thranduil on the casting call would suggest he has already been cast.
I'm just incredibly happy that Radagast is going to be involved.

It ain't real.

Update: After touching base with more of our contacts, we’ve been notified that this is not a valid list of lead roles and, in fact, some of the roles listed in the links are not relevant. Stay tuned here for more casting information as we get it, and rest assured we will follow every new story to confirm whether or not it is legit.

I'm still really hoping we get casting news soon, even with the June start date. Surely they would have their actors booked several months before shooting starts?

By the end of January. That's what I' hoping.

having a live action with 3D is very hard to do if you don't go with cameron's tech you are going to be in for a world of hurt. cameron spent YEARS on the tech.

Just to clarify things
Shooting live-action in 3-d and then inserting 3-d CGI animation is tricky.
Otherwise you're just going to convert stuff. However not all 3-d conversions are bad. Cameron has said that Titanic is also being conveted into 3-d and he has seen some minutes of that footage . It looked pretty spectacular according to him however the process is still long . Besides having a guy like Cameron supervising the process means that you'll get the best quality footage anyone. He knows how 3-d works .
It's not like he's just giving the company the footage and saying "do your job and i'll come back when you're finished".

And i think that's what directors should focus on. Unfortuntaley no one has years to study 3-d like Cameron has done. Guillermo and co. will also be under pressure to finish the movie in time. With the Potter movies , WB has shown interest in 3-d unfortunately it's still a gimmick as opposed to Avatar which was an immersing experience ( although i'll admit that the 3-d in Half Blood Prince & Order Of The Phoenix was pretty awesome )WB would have to convert the entire movie and there wouldn't be enough time to do that.

You can always count on The Sun to conjure up a nice pile of ****:

The Sun said:
SPIDER-MAN actor Tobey Maguire is to star in The Hobbit.
He will play the lead role of Bilbo Baggins in the blockbuster movie version of JRR Tolkein's classic book.

Maguire, 34, signed up after quitting the Spider-Man franchise after three films.

He is said to have been unhappy with the direction the fourth is set to take.

The Hobbit producer Peter Jackson - who was also behind the epic Lord Of The Rings trilogy - and director Guillermo del Toro have been after him for months.

Last night a source told The Sun: "The Hobbit team are deep in the casting process.

"Everyone is over the moon. Tobey is not only one of the most recognisable faces in Hollywood, he is also one of the best actors."

Rumours that Maguire - nominated for best actor Golden Globe for Brothers - could play Bilbo first surfaced last month.

At the time he said he had not spoken to the film-makers - but added: "I love Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson and I certainly wouldn't take myself out of the conversation."

Filming starts in the summer with The Hobbit story split into two movies, set for release in 2011 and 2012.

The Sun previously revealed how X Factor twins Jedward have been asked to audition for the roles of twins Fili and Kili.

They are in a band of dwarves who accompany Bilbo and wizard Gandalf on a mission to reclaim treasure from a dragon.

Guess reading the Sony press release on the Spider-Man franchise was too much of a daunting task for these astute journalists.

Not only that but they also were the ones who said that the next bond movie was going to be released in 3/d and that´s why the studio was delaying it

Lets get things clear there's only one Bilbo and that's Ian. Anyone younger is really just a cheap younger copy.

I know it has to be but Ian will always be Bilbo Baggins. Id say give him a test shot to see if can handle the films. I know he would look 70 but id be ok with Holme and older Bilbo then the wig. Just put a dark hair colored wig and do a slight Patrick Stewart and its over we have our Bilbo.

I don't think they're casting on the sole basis that the actor needs to look like Holm.

But fair enough.

And I'm not saying they should. But the guy needs to at least kind of look like him for the continuity to work.

Well in that case, I still say Tony Shalhoub or Hugh Bonneville (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0095017/).

Granted, recastings don't bother me too much (so long as the replacement is just as good as the original), and I'm willing to let continuity slide for the sake of the movie itself.

But that is just me.

As far as I'm concerned what they should be looking for in a Bilbo is this, listed by priority:

  1. Acting ability
  2. Typical Hobbit build
  3. Small resemblance to Ian Holm

Thank God I re-read that first sentence. I saw something totally different for a minute there.

i'll actually be kind of disappointed if we don't get these guys as dwarves in the movie

Brenden Gleeson
James Cosmo
Brian Cox
