When we first saw the news that David Tennant had left the cast of Burke And Hare, we thought it was pretty weird.

After all, Tennant's only at the start of his post-TARDIS film career, surely he shouldn't already be backing out of projects at the last minute.

Especially ones that sound as awesome as Burke And Hare. He was a title character (Hare) for Daleks' sake.

That is, unless the thing he's going on to do is guaranteed to be absolutely massive. Something he couldn't turn down. A career-maker. A Hobbit.

If you look closely at Simon Pegg's lovely (but sadly now deleted) Tweet that broke the story, the clues are there.

“David Tennant had to drop out of B&H but by sheer glorious serendipity a legend of Middle Earth and Skull Island has come aboard. Welcome AS"

So, Tennant has to drop out - presumably because he's been offered a role he can't turn down - and the Tweet that announces it contains both a reference to Middle Earth and confirmation that the person replacing him will be someone who has a far more flexible Hobbit filming schedule (Andy Serkis).

Tennant would be an absolutely perfect fit for Jackson's LOTR universe.

He's a brilliant British thesp who's unknown enough in Hollywood not to bring baggage to Baggins, yet who still has a massive fantasy following. He's as at home spouting Shakespearian soliloquies as he is fighting giant spiders.

And we can totally see him getting on with the new boy Guillermo del Toro.

We’re calling it. If David Tennant isn’t Bilbo, we’ll eat a second breakfast.

If he is, what do you think? If he isn’t, who should be?

Interesting. I don't want him as Riddler, but I'm trying to envision Holm's character as a youngster, and I think Tennant could have that sense of curious whimsy and attempts at being clever.

...Do the people at Total Film know how to read?

David Tennant is being replaced in "Burke and Hare" by a Middle Earth and Skull Island legend, aka Andy Serkis (AS).

This has nothing to do with Tennant being in The Hobbit. It's just an informal announcement that Serkis is on board B&H.

Epic fail.

Well that just makes my post lose all credibility, doesn't it? :csad:

Yeah that made me laugh. That said, it is an interesting idea. I think Tennant could pull Bilbo off. I just wonder how they would make him look hobbit size, given that he is extremely lanky and 6'3. I guess if they could do it with Davies...

Bad news. According to studio heads, The Hobbit is probably on track for a 2012 release, not a 2011 release. I'm getting quite annoyed with the inconsistencies between the studio and Peter Jackson.

Variety had a sit-down with New Line chief Toby Emmerich about the state of the modest, smaller and newly profitable New Line film studio and its new existence under the Warner Bros. umbrella. The conversation turned of course to “The Hobbit.” We learn, among other things that executive Michael Disco will oversee the two movies for the studio. Variety also spoke with Warner’s Alan Horn who, according to the article, “… won’t predict when the first of the two “Hobbit” films will be out, but says the most probable scenario would be a release in the fourth quarter of 2012.”

It concludes with, “It’s a big bet for us. But it’s one we think will pay off given the success of ‘Lord of the Rings,’” says Emmerich. “This is one of the few movies it feels like people are waiting for.” We know a few people who are indeed waiting for these films. In fact that “2012″ date that just got thrown around may start a riot. Remember fans biting your nails and tearing out you hair will not make things happen faster, nor will turning over cars or looting – they only leads to jail time.

Personally I don't view a delay as "bad news", merely "news".

Having seen Avatar, if I were still up to the casting stage I'd be pushing my deadline back and looking to take advantage of some of the new techniques its introduced, myself...

In an epic film like The Hobbit I think it would be HUGE.

I wonder if they'll use the new performance capture techniques used in Avatar on Gollum?

they will. in LOTR 2 and 3 the animators looked at the footage from Andy and translated this on gollum. they didnt use facial motion capturing.now they are using it on TinTin. WETA will now always use this for their CGI creations.

Well Jackson started working on LOTR is 97 and it didn't get released til 2001 so i am willing to guess Tolkien always take a bit to get done. I mean i am ok with them taking all time they need for this movie.
Pirates sequels rushed a terrible disaster even though were good attempt but rushed effected Pirates 3.

The Star Wars prequels is as good example also never t rush a good thing. I think to be honest 2013 is a fitting end for 2003 was when ROTK was released. So 10 years make sense too me. Like an anniversary of LOTR

really in 97? thats long. but ok they had 3 3 hour movie. Hobbit will have 2 movies with a 2:30 runtime.

longer is not better.

Um actually Peter Jackson said they took some stuff Tolkien had written when was wanted a bigger Hobbit after seeing rings. So they gonna use notes like mentioned thats more in the opening of the LOTR book but was basically to extend The Hobbits story.

Guillermo Del Toro said:
Going into my SECOND year in this project (I moved to NZ so long ago...) i must say that my calendar has also been adjusted. Since DEVIL'S BACKBONE I have made it a point to come out with a film every 2 years. TH is already an exception.

But news- all news-, from everyone, ever- are shifting until we get the green light. In this project we have seen- so far- the negotiations for a settlement, the change of guard at a studio (NL) and the decline and tribulations of another (MGM) these are no small factors and then you must add many, many other complications concurrent with the project and everybody's calendars and deals, etc

Monumental even before we shoot a single frame.

As the greenlight approaches, PJ and I will be on the spotlight at different times with different things (DBAOD, THE FALL book, etc) at different events (Conventions, festivals, promotions, etc) and news will be demanded about TH. And our versions and claims may change and shift simply because of the unique nature of this project. No one does it intentionally or because of misinformation.

Much is happening and much more will occur before production starts. We've made an effort to keep the project from becoming inert. I read so much speculation on the net (Bilbo being a CG character, the film being 3D, David Tennant as Bilbo) and meanwhile our lives over here are also quite interesting and busy. I would love to share much, but then wild surges occur and deadlines are bypassed.

Suffice to say, we are all progressing strongly and, as a director, my own vision for the movie (both parts) gets stronger every day. At this stage I have seen it in my head and I am full of unholy fire. I dream of it. Every single night.

I would love to "transcript" it soon- immediately- so we can all watch it together. Alas, the "transcript" is the thing, to poorly paraphrase the Bard.

Best

The bolded passage is an example of why I am beside myself he is directing these films. That kind of passion is a rarity these days.

This movie needs a greenlight Goddamnit :csad:.

I think this will happen when its meant to. I myself don't think Avatars success would make them panic at all. I believe The Hobbit when finished and believe its too big a film not to be made. Will have such a Box Office like never seen before

Considering that WB is readying the Sherlock Holmes sequel for 2011 , it is a safe bet that WB is now looking for a dec 2012 release for the first hobbit movie. They're still waiting for the all the legal mumbo jumobo over at MGM to settle but once that happens ( and hopefully that is soon) , expect them to make announcements as soon as possible

Hobbit will be huge in terms of BO and don't be surprised if WB is going to release it as a 3d feature. It's no surprise that PJ is also a huge fan of 3d however he ( along with WB) knows just how that there just won't be enough time to render all the images ( if at least they're going for a dec 2012-dec 2013 release dates) in time .

However if PJ will be impressed the conversion techniques currently used on Clash OF the Titanis and the last potter movies , i could see both hobbit movies being turned into 3d features.

Why need a 3d hobbit rings how it was is fine in my view. Just because it works for Cameron and sci-fi does not mean all films need to desperately use it.

Peter Jackson the LOTR god is a big fan of 3D. he wanted King Kong in 3D.
