Dark b you are crazy.

The fact that Del Toro himself dropped the Hobbit is proof enough that he doesn't need to prove anything. And you don't need a brand new director to make a good film either. Jackson knows the world really well and it is the one he established.

I'm starting to fear "Armitage as Thorin" is the new "Townsend as Aragorn."

He's a great actor, but he is just too young for this role.

Well they need to get a move on it because Christopher Lee is 88 years old and ain't getting any younger lol But I love him, can't imagine anyone else as Saruman. Sir Christopher will be in his 90s when these movies are released, still takin' names.

I thought Christopher Lee isn't appearing in this film(s).

He said he'd do it if they filmed whatever they needed (if they needed anything) in London. He won't fly to New Zealand though. He's too old and flying there took a lot out of him for the LOTR movies.

I guess he only needs to say a few lines during the White Council scenes and that's about it I guess. But would that mean the remaining cast fly to London as well or maybe Lee be inserted with the rest of the Council members? I'm sure Sir Peter can work some magic with this.

I can't tell if you're agreeing or disagreeing :csad:.

Well I can still recall the rumours from a couple years back. James McAvoy as Bilbo? So glad they never went along with that.

Am so so glad Martin Freeman scored the role of Bilbo. Don't know what the status of Sherlock is atm but I'm sure the show will continue. Managed to see the 3 episodes on the plane last week. Cleverly executed! :)

And I wonder once the Riddles in the Dark scene is done, will Sir Peter reinsert a little of the new footage into the Fellowship Prologue replacing taped back Ian Holm's Bilbo?

So 7 of the Dwarfs are cast. Who's left 6 right? Balin, Dwalin, Bifur, Bofur, Nori and Ori huh? I suppose Balin needs to be a meatier role too. Oh and I'm guessing they'll need to add an additional role in Dain Ironfoot too.

And with GDT gone I guess Doug Jones will also be out of the project along with Ron Perlman, who would make an awesome Beorn.

Dwalin's already been cast (Graham McTavish). The remaining dwarf roles are:

Balin
Bifur
Bofur
Ori
Nori

The other major roles remaining:

-William (voice)
-Bert (voice)
-Tom (voice)
-Goblin King
-Beorn
-Gwaihir (voice)
-Thranduil
-Bard
-Mayor of Laketown
-Smaug (voice)
-Saruman?
-Cirdan the Shipwright
-Glorfindel

Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Elrond (Hugo Weaving), Galadriel (Cate Blanchett), and Gollum (Andy Serkis) go without saying. Sylvestor McCoy is rumored to be Radagast. And I imagine they'll get Marton Csokas back for Celeborn.

Yeah, given all the technological feats they've achieved in the LOTR series, I'm sure inserting Lee into a scene will be a cake walk. Given his track record with the series though, I'm sure if he does a scene it'll only appear in the extended edition. :o

He would impale Jackson with his staff.

They've split the book into two films. Quite honestly, I'd be surprised if there were Extended Editions.

Anyway, if they can't work anything out with Lee, get Frank Langella.

And here's me still hoping there'll be a cameo by Orlando Bloom given he's from the Mirkwood Forest plus being the son of Thranduil. And I'm sure it wouldn't hurt if he also participated in the Battle of the Five Armies too. Still I hope we won't see some fancy surfing stunt or something though. :p

Great. Now I can't help but picture Smaug with Bill Nighy's Davy Jones voice.

"Mastah Bagginsah. Do you feeaar deathuh?"

Hmm, the latest Mark Sainsbury interview was interesting. One Hollywood insider was totally convinced the production would stay in NZ, citing Peter Jackson's own desire to hang onto it as being a primary factor.

Then Robyn Malcolm fronted up for the cameras for the union perspective and got quite worked up, apparently aghast at how far this thing has gone.

I'm guessing this will hit the net soon (if it hasn't already). The live broadcast was 45 minutes ago.

just beause we fans know that he is a good director that doesnt mean that the whole world knows this.the Hobbit was a probject that would make money and get attention no matter what.
he needed this movie to make hes horror blockbuster. of course he got lucky that Cameron will produce and give him the budget that he needs for hes vision.Del toro would give hes life for the Hobbit . Jackson will not .

its cute how you think that Jackson wants to direct two Hobbit movie. cute cute :woot:

Checking the TVNZ site right now!

Man how I'd love for this mess to blow up in Simon Whipp's face and the other in particular, Helen Kelly. She's fast becoming one of my most hated NZer's next to Christine Rankin! Somebody slap her for me, with a fish! ;)

Graham McTavish? Hell yeah.

Um Jackson has given decades of his life and millions of his own money to developing this franchise and building up the New Zealand film industry. Del Toro literally got tired of waiting and walked away. How is this proof he would "give his life" for the Hobbit?

Also the fact that del Toro was able to call in friends in high places to get funding for At the Mountains of Madness completely disproves your point about him needing the Hobbit to begin with. He has a good rep for creativity and directorial skill and is well connected. The Hobbit was actually a huge distraction from a long laundry list of passion projects.

Dain Ironfoot will need to be in the film, and I remember the film makers saying that Thrain (Thorin's father who died in Dol-Guldor in events before The Hobbit) would be featured as well. However that was back in the early Del Toro days, so he could no longer be present in the films.
As for the cast already assembled, I have no problems with it. I am slightly apprehensive about the casting of Richard Armitage as Thorin. I think everyone was expecting a far older actor for the Dwarven King, but considering he will be under layers of makeup and masses of hair and beard I’m sure it won't be a problem.
And Martin Freeman as Bilbo is perfect.
