i'd prefer Raimi do a movie i want to see. maybe direct that Shadow movie he's producing, or Spidey 4, or (although extremely unlikely at this point) Evil Dead 4

Is It Possible?? A Director Other Than Raimi For THE HOBBIT??

Merrick here...

This is from an untried source, so I suppose this should be taken with a grain of salt.

But, it’s pretty interesting none the less…and a potentiality I’d never truly considered. Personally, I think this notion makes a surprising amount of sense - although nothing makes as much sense as…say…just working things out with Peter Jackson and getting him the **** back onto the project! (I believe Jackson is now synonymous with LORD OF THE RINGS/HOBBIT & his absence will make any project feel pale, imitative, or exploitative).

Anyway, Checkyr wrote in, explaining who he is and why he would have access to this knowledge. He wanted to share this tidbit with readers. We all know that Sam Raimi is being courted to direct THE HOBBIT. As far as I’m concerned, this is a troubling choice give the sloppy and disingenuous SPIDER-MAN 3 – and Raimi’s increasing lack of style. Checkyr says that, concurrent with Raimi’s offer…MASTER AND COMMANDER director Peter Weir is also being approached.

Which…is pretty damn cool. MASTER AND COMMANDER is a very fine film with an awesome look and sense of character. I wholeheartedly agree with those who call it “the best STAR TREK film” in many years. If you don’t get that analogy, think about it before yelling at me in Talkbacks.

If anyone knows anything more about this, DROP ME A LINE & I’ll update the world!

Again, grain of salt…but compelling enough…

Climb Aboard HOBBITon's Director-Go-Round!! More Names For Your Weekend Consideration, Pontification, And Bewilderment!!

Merrick here...

Earlier this week, we posted a message from Checkyr. He told us that Peter Weir was being approached to direct THE HOBBIT…more or less concurrently with efforts to bring Sam Raimi aboard.
In that posting, we indicated Checkyr was an untried source, and that his “information” should be taken with a “grain of salt”. It should be noted that (to the best of my knowledge) we haven’t heard back from anyone refuting Checkyr’s assertion…nor have we fully confirmed it. Which means, we should approach the following while sucking on the same grains of salt…
Checkyr wrote back with a few more details about THE HOBBIT’s search for a director, offering-up the names of other folks The Powers That Be would approach should both Raimi and Weir fall through.
Checkyr emphasizes that THESE DIRECTORS HAVE NOT BEEN APPROACHED AT THIS TIME – they may never be approached should Raimi or Weir sign on. This is simply a “a hit list”, if you will. A “wish list”.
Here are the names in the order they were given to us. I’m unclear if the order of these names indicates a level of preference, or if they were thrown at us randomly. I tried to follow-up with Checkyr about this via e-mail, but he did not respond.

STEPHEN SOMMERS.
He’s always struck me as Uwe Boll on steroids, although I don’t recall disliking any Uwe Boll film as much as I disliked VAN HELSING.
I love the design of his movies, I love the way they’re shot. I love the spirit he’s trying to go for. But, I just can’t get away from the feeling of reckless self-indulgence his movies convey. No matter how Geeky-cool they may be in principle, I sense smarm oozing from every one of them.

MICHAEL BAY.
I’ don’t hate Michael Bay movies. In fact, I really kinda like them (the jury is still out on TRANSFORMERS – I’ve yet to see it). This said, I don’t think Michael would be right for this particular project. Too....much.
On a side note, I respectfully disagree with the recent Talkback sentiments that Michael Bay would’ve ****ed up DIE HARD 4. With Bay, at least we’d be assured some level of gusto and bravado (which the title “DIE HARD” inherently demands). I’m not convinced Wiseman will bring this to the equation.

BRAD SILBERLING.
Because...SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS knocked it so far out of the park? I did like some of its style and visual elements, but never bought into the characters or their universe. I enjoyed looking at it, but I didn’t live in it.
And, finally…

BILL CONDON (DREAMGIRLS, GODS AND MONSTERS).
A completely “out of left field” option that actually makes some level of sense. He has bag loads of visual flare & an accessible sense of character.

So...
One common thread in all of these directors is that (presuming this list is legit), all of the directors we’ve heard about thus far (Raimi and Weir included) tend to be heavy on aesthetic and design, and most tend to direct with flair and energy. Only two of them (Bay and Sommers) could be seen as flimsy in the character department.
So, there you have it. All we can do now is sit back, see where this goes, and gab about it in the Talkbacks below.
Again, a grain of salt...

Once I saw the first name "STEPHEN SOMMERS" on that list, I knew it was a report that means nothing.

There's no chance in hell they'd even consider that man to direct The Hobbit.

I may not be the biggest fan of Spidey 3, but I'm still going for Raimi on the Hobbit since PJ won't be a choice.

I hope they don't butcher this book as much as the LOTR's books.

How are they gonna have the token love interest? There is none in the entire book, but I'm sure they'll put some in and ruin it, much like two towres...

Brad Silberling seems to be the closest match to the kind of director that The Hobbit needs.

Peter Jackson to Return for The Hobbit?
Source: Los Angeles Times, Stuff.co.nz
August 10, 2007

New Line Cinema has given "The Lord of the Rings" fans, who want to see director Peter Jackson return for The Hobbit, some hope. Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, studio founder Bob Shaye commented on the matter:

Eager to move ahead with "The Hobbit," New Line has quietly been trying to mend fences with "Rings" filmmaker Peter Jackson, who has sued the company over his share of profits from the first "Rings" films. When asked if it was true that company insiders had been in talks with Jackson's reps, Shaye replied, "Yes, that's a fair statement. Notwithstanding our personal quarrels, I really respect and admire Peter and would love for him to be creatively involved in some way in 'The Hobbit.'"

According to Stuff.co.nz, Ian McKellen also said there was no doubt that a rumored reprisal of his Gandalf role in a film version of The Hobbit would be discussed with Jackson and [Fran] Walsh.

The site contacted Jackson's spokesman, who added: "Peter and Fran have always wanted to 'The Hobbit' but whether that happens is yet to be decided."

Peter Weir would do an amazing director, but as much as I think he's a hack, Jackson should return.

Tried to keep an open mind when I heard about this months ago but I'm just not gonna be satisfied unless Pete Jackson comes back. A standalone Hobbit flick would be alright I guess, but I'd much rather have a version with the same feel as the LOTR films and I don't see that happening if they go with someone else.

C'mon, New Line, you know it'll make a bazillion dollars, send Jackson a nice fruit basket and get it done.

Better to have Sam Raimi directing "The Hobbit" instead of Bryan Singer, that much is certain.

This may be a bit radical but what do you guys think about Quentin Tarantino doing the Hobbit? I personally would like to see Tarantino do the hobbit.

Well it looks Peter Jackson and New Line will make-up for the fans to bring The Hobbit to us! this come from Mania.com: http://www.mania.com/55690.html and http://www.latimes.com/entertainmen...in10.1aug10,1,841904.story?ctrack=1&cset=true

YEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAW!!!!!!!!!!!

YES!!!

another completely boring, heartless, overrated, 4 hour long movie, coming our way!!

woo-hoo!

If Ian McKellen dies before this movie is made, I will destroy New Line for their idiocy in delaying this movie's production with their bull****.

glad to hear they're trying to sort out thier differences (or money issue). i wondering if they will be offering him a huge percentage of the profit for "The Hobbit".
