Which if a third Bale/Nolan Batman movie happens will take that crown Last Sunrise.

I disagree. As amazing as batman begins is, and how good the dark knight looks. They will never be on the field of LOTR. LOTR are epic fantasy battle films, atleast the last two are, and Batman in my eyes will never be that and it won't accomplish what LOTR did. BUT Nolans batman films will always be considered the greatest comic book films ever made. LOTR will always be considered one of the greatest films EVER made, period. That's the way I see it, but that's just me and my opinion. as far as batman goes though, I just hope we don't get a spider man thing here, were the first two were great and the director got what he wanted and the third film the producers pushed everything they wanted onto the director and his story and messed it all up, hopefully that doesn't happen to batman. I'd rather them keep on making batman movies past the third one if it made a balance between the director and the producers. but neways, the hobbit will most likely be awesome lol

the LOTR movies sucked... hard. i can't stress this enough.

i honestly don't see how another two movies (or roughly 8 or 9 hours) of people walking around could appeal to anyone, let alone such a wide fan base.

plus, you know that they'll release the super-duper-mega-blah-blah versions of the first three films to commemorate this release... ugh.

Only comparing the first of each series...The Fellowship of the Ring has over 90% on rottentomatoes and every single other critic site you could possibly think of, it won many academy awards and was nominated for best picture, best director, best supporting actor- as far as creative integrity goes. Fellowship is on the AFI list of greatest films of all time, and it made close to a billion dollars. The general audience loves it. It is a masterfully crafted piece of cinematic art. Batman Begins does not fall under any of those categories and all of those feats combined really does prove Batman just isn't on the same level no matter how many of the fans want to think so. And this is coming from someone who thinks Batman Begins was a good movie. But what are the chances of The Dark Knight being as much of a sweeping epic as The Two Towers or Batman 3 pulling in 11 Oscars, $1 Billion, and being one of the most critically acclaimed movies of all time.

Because they were great films? Films that are on such a high level that it'll be a while before another film can even match it in terms of greatness and perfection?

Trust me, it'll be a while before ANY film manages to top LOTR in terms of storytelling, acting, and visual wise. LOTR, in my opinion, is one of the huge films that manage to get everything right with what they intended to capture from the beginning. It had suspense, action, romance, comedy, and drama which ultimately balanced perfectly with one another and Jackson created a marvelous universe that was very realistic looking.

I truly feel LOTR is what I would consider to be a perfect trilogy.

I agree on all counts. If the hobbit is half as good as the LoTrs, then i'll be one happy camper.

I was watching LOTR when it was on TNT the other day and they are just wonderfully done.

But I have to disagree with some of you here. It'll still be the 3rd place Trilogy for me behind Star Wars and Indiana Jones.

I agree but were both older then where Christ left his sandals.
Lotr will be regarded as the trilogy this generation grew up on,like Star Wars or Indy is to us...

I agree, If Jackson doesn't direct I would much rather have Del Toro direct it then Raimi.

staring off into the distance, speaking slowly, and looking wispy all the time is NOT good acting, it's over acting... stretching what could have easily fit into a 2 hour movie into a 4 hour movie isn't good storytelling... and spending a good 20 or 30 minutes of a movie with sweeping shots of the landscape (ie: a bunch of hills) is not good visual directing. (although, most of the cgi and especially the practical effects were admittedly terrific)

all three movies, especially the third, in my opinion, were very, very boring, and so damned overrated it's criminal.

I vote for DelToro. Defininately no to Burton.Weir maybe.Rami no.And for the record the LOTR trilogy is a masterpiece that all fantasy films will forever be compared to.The only other fantasy film that came close to matching it is Pan's Labyrinth.I wish jackson would direct just so the Prequels could have the same feel as the LOTR trilogy, that way I could have a 20 hour Tolkein marathon in about 5 years.Anybody up for it?

I'm going to be lazy and copy/paste a post I put up on Rottentomatoes about a year ago, but I think that now's a good time to discuss it again:

Smaug holds a special place in fantasy literature as the archetypical ancient, intelligent, talking, gold-hording red dragon and he deserves special treatment in a screen version of The Hobbit.

As a thirtysomething Gen-Xer, I still have clear images of the mammalian batlike Smaug with searchlight eyes and Richard Boone's voice from the Rankin-Bass 1977 animated version of The Hobbit. I would think that a more reptilian Smaug would probably be better for the movie version, but the character still needs to be expressive enough to set him apart from all the other movie dragons from recent years.

I can not wait for this. I grew up with the original S.W and Indy jones, and I have to say that for me at least LoTR is right up there with them, if not a tad better.

No, it's not good acting...luckily that didn't happen in these films.

Even the supporting characters in these movies like Gollum and Eowyn are vastly better acted and developed than the leads in most films, even good ones.
The sweeping shots of the landscapes and the use of the camera is an active part of the storytelling showing the scale of what we're dealing with, and many of the best shots were done on a sound stage with Jackson in the directors chair.

If Jackson isn't directing, Del Toro is the only other director I'd be even remotely comfortable with, since Pan's Labyrinth is the only fantasy epic that's even close to being worthy of comparison to LOTR.

I wonder if a Peter Jackson and Gore Verbinski collaberation would work. I think Gore is alot better then people say.
I think why PJ isn't directing is because of Tin Tin with Steven Speilberg. Maybe Steven Would direct this but i still Like Gore, Tim Burton or Sam Raimi.

I just finished watching The Two Towers btw, far more entertaining than anything Del Toro has ever done...and I love Del Toro.
