2012 is already out of contention...and 2013 is going away day by day at this rate. All this replacement director talk is interesting but ultimately irrelevant/pointless. MGM still has zero dollars in their bank account and they've yet to be either bought out by a bigger company (they balked at the lowest offer ironically enough coming from WB a month or so back) or sell off their properties piece by piece.

They can't even put Red Dawn (which is damn-near finished) in theaters no less cut a trailer for it.

Pretty much what i've been thinking when i read the news of Yates and PJ.
And there is also the matter of PJ commitments to other studios with the other properties he's supposed to make. He can't just go away without getting sued.
If WB ( and MGM) want him to direct Hobbit they will have to negeotiate some kind of deal with PJ and the other movie studios. That or simply push back the release date.

She hasn't directed anything in her life and i doubt WB and MGM are that desperate.

MGM's in deep debt right now. They need to sell off some big properties or accept a bid, because they're going to start paying off that loan sooner or later.

Even though it was obvious the info was legit. All the evidence pointed to that conclusion. WB/MGM only recently admitted it was going to be 2012/2013 and now that isn't even going to happen.

Every month or so we keep getting these "Oh they're going to settle all of this mess in the next month or so" stories. And then nothing happens. No reason to suggest it's going to get any cleaner any sooner. Especially after the Red Dawn development. Cabin in the Woods will be the next victim obviously.

WB - Would you be okay with having no input what so ever on the creative decisions of the movies

Except that Brett Ratner has proven time and time again that he's good at delivering mediocre movies. Peter Jackson isn't dumb ...by allowing Rattner to direct Hobbit he will basically have given the finger to pretty much the entire fanbase.

My guess is that Rattner name has popped up amongst discussions between studio exec.

That IMAX press release originally listed Hobbit for December 2013. People noticed and WB freaked out claiming that it was a typo/incorrect. It wasn't wrong. The info just got out sooner than they anticipated.

She's been around the source material most of her life. If there is anyone who has the same creative and devoted mentality that GDT and JAckson had, its her.

But not that desperate to give someone who hasn't directed a movie in her life a project worth at least 200 million and shooting 2 movies back-to-back.
She seriously needs to prove herself and no doubt that Peter jackson would need have an active hand in making both movies. There is a reason why they hired Guillermo after all.

Otherwise Peter Jackson would've recommended christian rivers to direct the 2 movies.

It'll be a damn shame if MGM shelves Cabin in the Woods and it winds up being a direct-to-DVD release.

And I don't know why Warners and MGM are deadset on getting Jackson to direct The Hobbit when MGM doesn't have a cent to their name. Is there a contingency plan for Warners to start production by 2011, regardless if MGM can't co-finance?

Other filmmakers are interested in replacing del Toro. Sources tell me David Yates, David Dobkin, and the ubiquitous Brett Ratner are among them.

If Neill Blomkamp directs then I think that this movie is in safe hands. It's still disappointing that we'll never get to see Del Toro's vision, because the man is a genius when it comes to fantasy, but I'm very confident Blomkamp will have a very remarkable vision too that will feel true to the original trilogy and the book. Peter Jackson has a lot of faith in the guy and from what I've seen it's well founded.

i dont think he would let Rartner use the same editing style like in hes Rush Hour movies.

Yeah, Blomkamp is probably the only person besides PJ that I don't have any problem with. He seems like the type of guy that respects GDT and probably wouldn't change much as far as the designs, previz, and script go. And, he also has a strong creative assertiveness, meaning he can still make The Hobbit his own, even when using the plethora of content that GDT and PJ created for the movie. So if this ends up being true, go for it, Neill.

Blomkamp had said that he prefers to make movies with small budgets because he was tired of the constant studio exec. bickering over HALO.
This time around things are different with Hobbit in that MGM's financial situation is the problem here; both MGM and WB want to make Hobbit and will give PJ basically "free reign".

My only concern with Blomkamp is that he hasn't proven that he can handle fantasy. His short movies as D9 show a gritty apprach for SCI-FI whereas someone like GDT shows that he can handle fantasy in a beautiful elegant way. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt because PJ has faith in him.

if MGM doesn't go anywhere, is it possible for WB and MGM to make a deal and just buy out the rights? I know MGM is stubborn but if it's a sinking ship with no hope in sight, then why not?
