Great news about Blanchett and the additional cast. It's just McKellen and Serkis we need now. And the voice of Smaug. Although that probably won't come until way later.

Hugo Weaving too. Elrond has a small role in The Hobbit, unlike Galadriel...

To bad Saruman won't be able to be in it... that would be awesome. And if Weaving, Serkis and Mckellen aren't in the film... I will be mad.

Definitely need McKellen in this. Surprised there hasn't been an official announcement.

Orlando Bloom Close To Legolas Reprise In 'The Hobbit?'
By MIKE FLEMING | Wednesday December 8, 2010 @ 5:56pm EST

After New Line Cinema announced Cate Blanchett's return to Middle Earth for 'The Hobbit,' I'm told that Orlando Bloom will likely be the next original cast member set for an encore. He's near a deal to return as Elven archer Legolas. And it's for more than a cameo, I'm told. I'd have expected them to first set Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Andy Serkis (Gollum) or Hugo Weaving (Elrond), whose characters figured in the book. But those talks have been arduous and aren't completed yet.

This movie will be all but set when those three are signed.

I haven't the book in over a year, but was the 'Elf King's son Legolas? It was implied in the book but no name was given (Since I'm sure it wasn't planned out until Tolkien wrote 'Lord of the Rings', subtlety tying it to 'The Hobbit'.

Great casting news! I'm definitely going to have to go back and re-read this book though. It's been a while!

This actually feels like it is really going to happen now. :)

With Orlando possibly coming back, let's hope Mr. Lee will too.

Great news about the returning cast! I'm almost kind of surprised to hear about Bloom so early, I wonder if his role is bigger than we think?

Legolas will probally have major role In Climatic battle of five armies during film 2.And will
have a presence when the dwarvies are captured by the wood elves, and brough before
his father.

Hugo Weaving too. Elrond has a small role in The Hobbit, unlike Galadriel...

If Galadriel is in then Gandalf's side trip involving Dol Guldur is looking increasingly likely. I'd say it's a safe bet that Elrond will be around for any related White Council content.

Might even be an interesting side story of why Legolas is so fond of Dwarves, and why he fosters a friendship with Gimili in LOTR.

Man, do I need to re-read this book again. I can hardly recall any details.

Exciting casting news, though. Hope the others all return too.

Didn't Legolas hate dwarves like any other elf until he become friends with Gimli?

Yes. Their friendship is touching because they both overcome prejudice. Though for Gimli, that came about only once he had set eyes on Galadriel.

It's a bit like hating Asians until you meet a really hot Asian girl, really. Bad form, Gimli.

Not really. It says something to the beauty of Galadriel, that it was able to make Gimli's attitude change. All he ever got from her was to see her, talk to her, and 3 strands of her hair.

I mean it's not like he got to boink her or anything.

No, but he wanted to. And that changed his mind about Elves. So it's the same.

I'm not really sure it is. I mean he remaned chaste for the rest of his life, because of her.

That's like saying a person who hated Christians, suddenly has a change of heart after meeting an angel because they wanted to boink it, not because of the beauty of the creature.

Whilst Elves exist in Middle Earth, there are no such things as angels in ours. Asian girls were the best real-world stand in for Elves I could think of.
