I don't think it's appropriate to unequivocally condemn people for not fighting their teammates. I think people often forget the value of having good friends and training partners, and I don’t think it has occurred to many people that Bones Jones and Fitch may not have been in the position to contend for titles without assistance from guys like Evans and Koscheck, and vice versa.

If preparation is the most important part of the sport, why would you suddenly change your camp in order to fight a partner? If the cost of creating a top contender involves not being able to see them fight a couple other top contenders, it doesn’t seem like too high of a price.

Plus, do we really want friends and training partners to fight each other? Is it possible for 2 training partners to give 100% in a fight against each other? If the answer is no, why do we want to watch a fight where the participants are holding back?

That's why I've never had a problem with teammates not fighting each other. I'm sure every person feels that their training camp and partners are very valuable to their fighting skills, otherwise they wouldn't be in that camp.

Just look at how many people flock to the Jackson camp. You have a guy like Rashad who has blossomed from a one dimensional wrestling prospect to an elite fighter at 205, and it happened under the tutelage of the Jackson camp. Why should he change now for an exciting fight with Jon Jones?

On the other side of that you have a young guy in Jon Jones that looked good before joining the Jackson camp, but he's looked even better and has grown under one of MMA's best camps. If he didn't feel any value in his training there he would have never gone there in the first place, much less keep training with them. Why should he change now for one fight?

It's the same thing with the AKA guys. Both Fitch and Koscheck get top level training with AKA, so it's not really fair to criticize them for not wanting to leave the camp for one fight against each other. Whoever loses will directly blame it on not training with the same camp, and no one else would do it again. If teammates want to fight that's fine, but they shouldn't be forced into doing it because there are reasonable objections to fighting a teammate.

It really really sucks that Jose Aldo isn't fighting at 125, but then I realized that it might be a possibility to move his title defense against Grispi to the Super Bowl card. Having Anderson/Vitor and Jose Aldo on the same card would be too awesome.

I can see Dana saying Fitch/Penn is for #1 contender status.

Anyone know if Jake Shields is already getting the winner of GSP/Kos?

I'd rather see Shields vs. GSP. I understand why a fight with koscheck might be more exciting, but it's really a rematch I don't care about. Let's get GSP in against some new opponents before scheduling a rematch.

I can just see how boring GSP/Shields is going to be. Worst match-up ever! Oh well....

Yeah, sucks that Aldo got injured. He had a busy 2010 anyway. The dude deserves a break and hopefully the UFC can really build a real #1 contender while he's out.

GSP/Shields wouldn't be boring at all. It would look just like the fight with Fitch. Shields wouldn't be able to get GSP down, and he'd get beat down because his striking is just atrocious. If GSP went for the takedown there is a chance that Shields could hang with him and get the win, but I doubt GSP would do that. GSP is one of the smartest fighters in the game. He is strong everywhere, and it allows him to attack his opponents weaknesses. He's a better striker than grapplers, and a better grappler than strikers. He's the ultimate fighter Excuse the lame cliche but it fits.

I'm actually really looking forward to GSP-Shields (if GSP beats Koscheck ofc).

GSP can outstrike Shields, but at some point, the ground is going to come into play (unless GSP just rocks Shields silly with a strike).

Jose Aldo
pound for pound is number 1

Sheilds is a great wrestler, but so is GSP, idk who has better wrestling.

BJ Penn looked like a monster, I can finally wear my hats and shirts without hiding my face again. Hopefully he remains fighting that way.

strikeforce this week, ufc 124 next week, the last wec event the week after that

Overeem has been tested though. Sure it was a test that Strikeforce assessed themselves instead of a state athletic commission, but he got tesed nonetheless and came out positive. Of course someone taking PEDs could still test positive if they cycle and/or use masking agents, but innocent until proven guilty is my motto.

Hey, at least Reem can take a punch...unlike somebody we know.
*coughs*brocklesnar*coughs*

lol When has Overeem been shown to take a punch? If anything that's been his downfall throughout his career. Hell he ran away from Sergei just like Brock did.

I see what you've done there :D

You know I was literally about to reply with something very similar.

Overeem has looked out of his depth & struggled against people who hit hard and/or are better strikers than him.

Also does getting rocked by 2 of the hardest hitting heavyweights in current circulation count as not being able to take a punch..?
He can take them, he just can't defend them..

Don't be stupid, you know damn well that Reem can take a punch. He's been around quite awhile, you don't last long when you can't take a punch.

How did you come up with this conclusion? Seriously?

How did you come up with this conclusion? Seriously?

What conclusion? That hes struggled against either good strikers or people that hit hard?

He just has, of the top of my head I don't recall Overeem beating many (if any) prolific strikers in MMA or fighters that are technically very good strikers.. at least in the striking department.

When hes getting tagged in the face or being hit hard he then becomes reluctant to commit to his strikes as he usually does & resorts to pawing his opponents & tries to close the distance & get into the clinch just to avoid taking anymore shots.. Which is more less what Lesnar did against Carwin & tried to do against Velasquez.

I don't think Overeem has a glass jaw or anything but I don't think he has a much better chin than Lesnar.. if even.

Well I don't criticize the guy for roiding if it's in Japan. It's not cheating if they don't test for it. And hell, it's possible to get that big without roiding. I wouldn't be shocked either way if he was clean or not.

Que? Did Overeem not fold like a lawn chair after getting tagged by Chuck, Shogun, Lil Nog, and Sergei? Hell he tapped to strikes against Arona of all people. He's always been a front runner. He can dish it out as good as anyone, but once he takes damage he gives up. Just look at when he lost to Sergei. When he started taking damage he crumpled and got beat down. There is a reason you've never seen a comeback from him. He doesn't take punishment well, and he has terrible cardio. If he doesn't destroy a guy early on he'll fade and get his ass kicked. This has been pointed out several times throughout his career.

I would be amazed if he hadn't used roids at some point in his career, he was a lanky stick insect & then it seemed like little time had passed & he returned massive with the physique of a comic superhero.

I personally know a few guys who were pencil thin and bulked up without and PEDs. That's why I give some guys the benefit of the doubt since I worked out with some guys who didn't take anything besides the stuff they sell at GNC. Of course those really are PEDs, but I've had a few guys do it naturally like I do. I'm not some bodybuilding wonder at all btw. I just don't take any kind of supplements, and I try to be all natural.

Now if I were a betting man I'd say that Overeem has used something before, but it still wouldn't shock me if he took "legal" supplements and put more weight on his frame. He's gone overboard though. He looks too constricted by his big muscles now. I think 240 is his best weight.
