Ugh. I see I'm just gonna have to get used to Potacio's ugly mouths.

Namor certainly has a thing for blondes... :p

For those who complained about Portacio's art, you'll be happy to know that Land is back :(

UNCANNY X-MEN #530

Written by MATT FRACTION
Pencils & Cover by GREG LAND

"QUARANTINE" Is there anything worse than that slow, sinking, feeling like you're getting sick? You can't get warm. Your bones hurt. Your throat closes and your chest gets too heavy every time you breathe and then you know you're doomed... so what if it happened to all the X-Men, all at once? The Sublime are back and they've unleashed a contagion on Utopia. To what end? Why now? And what's next? Who's left in San Francisco to deal with the Collective Man? Related: where does Dazzler get all her awesome outfits? Part 1 (of 5)

Are "The Sublime" those people who copied mutant powers a few issues back? I sorta liked them. I've been asking for the U-Men to come back, and they're close enough. I just hope this story is actually good instead of feeling like filler.

OK going back to what I remember of Morrison's run Sublime was behind the U Men he was some acient virus or something that took control of Hank in the here comes tomorrow arc. Have to check but I think he was the drug Mags was using when he was Xorn as well.

Sublime (I think) is a sentient bacteria that evolved during the primordial age. It was able to invade and control virtually all organisms, until mutants emerged. Because it couldn't 'infect' them in the same way it could ordinary humans (see Phalanx really), it saw them as a threat, and developed by proxy, a way of enhancing its abilities via kick. Inhalation of Kick by a mutant gave Sublime a threshold.

I'm not sure how it works though. Is Sublime one bacterium that can survive anything but is limited by its physicality, hence its infection of pedal organisms; or is it countless cells of the same species 'Sublime' that act independantly or through hive mind or something?

At least Land's art is pretty to look at.

Ive been a big defender of Portacio's work but this last issue was just bad. Some parts were good but overall, it looked messy. Too uneven and his worst issue yet.

i noticed alot of these guys from the 90's boom (Portacio, the Kubert bros., etc) have deviated from the "standard" comic/Jim Lee look they started off with and developed their own styles now.....i think Portacio was better off with what he had 20 years ago.

He at least has an excuse. I read that back in 2000, he fell into a diabetic coma after his pancreas failed. The result of that was that he couldnt walk or draw upon waking up and it would take 6 months before he could pick up a pencil. He literally had to learn how to draw again. This is what he wrote about it on his blog:

You can't understand what my mind went thru that one day before August of 2000 I could draw with the ease that a lifetime of art training had given me and then in one day to wake up after losing one week in my life and all of a sudden thirty pounds lighter, not being able to walk, in fact barely being able to stand, but most important not being able to draw anymore. My mind could see what I wanted to draw but my hand couldn't accomplish it. It was six months before I could pick up a pencil again and draw SOMETHING, anything. It was a year later before I could draw somewhat like I use to. My biggest problem being not being able to "see" with my eye whether things like eyes and ears were aligned or even the same size. Sometimes I couldn't even see if what I had drawn was any good at all. In 2002 to 2004 I had thought I had it back and as you could see by the uneven quality of some of my work then like StormWatch. I was still being effected by my diabetes.

Overall, I think he's doing good considering what happened to him. His style is definetly not the same as it once was, but Ive been impressed what Ive seen from him since he came back a few months ago. I think he still struggles when he draws but tries to make the best of it. Gotta have alot of respect for the guy for that. I think this last issue may have been rushed bc some parts look like they would have been better had more time been given to it

Portacio's X-Factor and Uncanny were awesome. No-one draws Archangel as great as he did.

I always thought Portacio was the greatest at the Gold team.
Awesome Iceman, Colossus, Storm etc....That cover of Uncanny when Storm is pointing at Bishop is one of my favourites.

I haven't read any of Gillen's work.

Pick up his Thor run and the small mini-series that turned out to be SWORD. Good stuff.

he wrote Dazzler's tale in Manifest Destiny. He might actually use her considering he likes the character
