Comics Official X-Men Forever Thread

We are now taking bets on what issue CC will utilize two of his favorite cliches:

1) The mutual admiration society: where two characters are talking about a third, saying how he/she doesn't realize how brave/artistic/capable they are. I'll say this is done at the end of the first story, whatever issue that is.

2) The baseball game. Cute the first 20 times I saw it. I call it by issue 10 (I'm predicting about a 24 issue run.)

Which is the only reason I continue to pick up Bendis's Avengers titles, that and I'm a fan of a majority of his New Avengers Roster/

To use an X-Men example, I only pick up Black Panther because Storm is in it.
I love Spider-man and a few others who have been on the New Avengers but I only read the first issue and never looked back.

I hope this series is good because, in theory, Gambit will be in it. But I am not hopeful because lately CC has been just plain awful. He killed both Exiles and Excalibur for me. :(

I have faith, because in this universe Claremont gets his own sandbox... He doesn't have to go in and restructure what everyone already likes into his own thing... he can just do what he wants.

Hell, people should be happy. Giving him stuff like this keeps him from interfering as much with established product.

3) Some villain tries to dominate one of the female characters and force them to be his slave/queen and then they fight them off with their indomitable will power.

Because this is a retro book, he can only go so far. He can't kill anyone off that is stil alive and all that. He does have some boundries.

In theory, if its meant as a proper AU, anything thats been established as history for characters since then can not be changed either. I.e. Gambits secret with the Marauders may have been revealed many years after X-Men 3 but is based on events prior to it, thus should be in continuity of X-Men Forever.

Whether this will or won't be the case though I've got no idea (afterall.. Claremont proved with an AU Gambit being the son of Namor that he doesn't entire the grasp this whole Alternate Universe concept)

X-Men the End, and near enough Exiles (until he threw the point of it out the window and brought 616 Sage and Psylocke in) were his own little Sandbox to do whatever he wanted with too and they were disapointing at best.

its a retro book but it becomes the 161 universe after Xmen 3...so he can kill people off and change wahtever secret Gambit had to what it originally was supposed to be

think of it like Star Trek. Its the same universe up until the appearance of the Romulans and they changed things and it becomes its own timeline separate from the Original Series.

LoL forgot about this from aaaaaaaaages ago.

Retro.. but still relevant to his current writing.

Newsarama said:
NRAMA : Tell us about this new "Queen Storm" series that you are writing.

CC : I'm so glad that Marvel gave me the oppurtunity to announce this series myself. The "Queen Storm" series has been my own personal baby for a while and I can't believe that I've actually been allowed to make it. It's an ongoing Marvel Knights series, set outside of continuity which we've dubbed a "Dominated-Erotic-Journey". Each week a different marvel villain will capture Storm and dominate her and attempt to force her to be their queen. Storm has to use all of her skills and her indomitable will power to overcome them and to beat them.
:lmao:

But I thought that this is just Claremont's universe and so he can do whatever he wants. Isn't it? There wouldn't be a point otherwise.

he can and the first issue proved it

I don't agree at all with that. Whatever the secret was, it existed at the time of X-Men 3. Just because it was revealed later, doesn't change that.

Frankly, I've seen Bendis do much less in the continuity-torturing arena and get raked over the coals for it.

I don't have a problem with this series. In fact, I bought, and kinda liked, Issue 1. But the series has no more to do with 616 than Ultimate does (imo).

Yes the secret that Gambit had during CC's original run was not the secret that was revealed.
I dont have an issue if a writer created a plot device or in this case a secret and goes back and retcons it. Like is Busiek came back the the Avengers and reworked some things from his run or Peter David coming back to Hulk and retconning his stuff.
The series is set in the 161 unverse not 616

I actually kind of liked it. I don't remember what the dynamic between Jean and Logan was at the time, so that aspect of it was a little jarring. Not unrealistic, mind you, considering that the two characters eventually ended up there (kind of). But I just don't remember it being that in the open back then.

I also have to admit, that this x-period was my least favorite.

I have to admit, x-stories have become so convoluted, that I'm not even sure I know what his secret is/was/was supposed to be anymore. So he can really go to town, for all I know...

his big secret was he formed the marauders

I read this and I thought it was a bit of a mess. My first WTF? moment came when I read the cast list, even before the story itself, and Gambit was listed as Remy Picard? What's up with that? I did later recall that it wasn't until X-men 4 or 5 that Sabes outed Gambit as "Remy" and later we got the LeBeau and the Guilds. Does this mean CC is going to dump all of that? I don't understand why we even have to open with a question. If at this point we haven't been told what his given names was, why even name him at all? That looks a bit ominous to me from the start.

After that I found the pacing abrupt and awkward. Rushed. There was a second WTF?moment when Gambit actually asked if Rogue could shut her powers off and on. Shouldn't he have known that by now? In X-men 2 they show Rogue freaking out when Gambit tried to touch her, that should have been a clue right there, right? Maybe CC should have read those issues before he wrote this, just to get caught back up. :(

I dunno. I went into this with a really low expectation and it ain't getten any higher, especially with the preview of the next covers on the last page. Next ish cover shows Logan all fried, and Gambit isn't on any of the others. :( I don't think thhis series is going to be lasting very long.

Remy Lucard is an alias. It was mentioned that Gambit would be the type of person with a different name on several passports and identities. The thieves guild origin wasnt CC's origin for the character.

at the time Rogue just got back to the team and these issue are actually their first meeting as she is just getting back to the team after helping Magneto in the savage land

I dont see how Gambit and Wolverine are the make or break characters of this series

he's on the cover of three and five

Yes but X-men 2 where Gambit tried to touch Rogue was included in the Forever Alpha that directly predates this new series. Gambit would have known he couldn't touch her from that.

And if Gambit was one to have aliases, why even name him at all in the beginning of this? They could have just left him simply as Gambit. A book shouldn't open with a direct question lke that, it should just be left as a mystery to be explained later. Best not to confuse the audience before the curtain has even gone up. ;)

Oh and yeah, Gambit and Wolverine could actually make or break this book. Just ask anyone -- besides Deadpool fans - just who they went to see the Wolverine Origins movie for? CC had best be careful just how far off the path he treads....
