Okay, so I just bought a lot of TPB's...

JLA Year One I can't recommend enough...

...too often you hear fanboys going off about how Morrison's JLA is god's gift to comics, but Waid's Year One doesn't get enough praise...

...Aquaman and Manhunter are written so well, who cares if it's out of continuity,a good story is a good story

My Opinions:

-Xmen: Age of Apocalypse Vol.1
-Xmen: Age of Apocalypse Vol.2
-Xmen: Age of Apocalypse Vol.3
-Xmen: Age of Apocalypse Vol.4

Great reads! Probably the best X-Men Event ever in my opinion, but if you haven't read them before start at volume 2-4, then go back and read 1. 2-4 is the main AoA and Vol. 1 is stuff released later compiled chronologically. Also if you haven't read it, try to find the X-Men: Legion Quest trade (or the issues) as they are what starts AoA and should have been included in the first volume if you ask me.

-Xmen: Dark Phoenix Saga

I can't say I'm as big a fan of this as most, but it's good and if you're anything like me (and you always tend to be) you'll enjoy it.

-Xmen: Mutant Genesis

Containing two stories, both great. The first arc is (in my opinion) a classic Magneto story that blew me away the first time I read it. The second story is good on a whole differant level. I have this one myself and am glad to have it.

-Xmen Visionaries: Jim Lee

Not a fan of the Visionaries stuff as they tend to have issues drawn by people, even though the stories included don't flow or make sense together. This one isn't as bad though and it has some great stories. The Psylocke story is amazing so you'll enjoy it. I also like the last story with the Savage Land and the Shi'ar. Good stuff.

-Xmen: Fall of the Mutants

Classic story. The X-Factor and X-Men stories are awsome but the New Mutants one isn't as good. I liked it because of nastalgia reasons, but the other two are just plain good. There's a reason it's known as a classic.

-Xmen: Phoenix Endsong

Entertaining read and likeable art. Overall I felt a bit 'meh', but worth a read.

-Xmen: X-Cutioner's Song

Honestly, one of my all time favorate stories. To me, this was one of the essential Summers stories including so many great characters from every X-Title. I loaned this trade to someone once who didn't like X-Men. He became an X-Men fan immediately.

-Xmen: Days of the Future Past

Not bad, but I couldn't care less really. It left no lasting effects on me.

-Avengers/Xmen: Bloodties

Storyline isn't bad, but it has the curse of following up Fatal Attractions, so for me it fell short. It's entertaining and I plan to own it myself some day, but I would'nt make it your first read.

-Spider-man: Maxium Carnage

As a fan of the 90's, I loved this. When I think of my favorate spidey stories (and many criticize them) I think of this and Clone Saga first. I know most don't like Clone Saga, but then a lot of people criticize Carnage too. In my opinion, it's great, read up.

-Xfactor Visionaries: Peter David Vol.1

Good story, art turns me off though. Kinda 'meh'

-Excalibur Classics: Vol.1

A good read, nothing spectacular, but good.

-Infinity Gauntlet
Having once been an anti-cosmic reader (before Annihilation) this was the only cosmic story that claimed my heart. I would list this trade as one of my top 5 favorates, and probably fairly high up there. Highly recommended.

-Infinity War

Pales in comparison to Gauntlet, but still pretty good. My first time reading it was in trade form and they had a hard time making the crossovers fit. Unfortunately, the Infinity Watch issues take place inbetween cracks of the actual Infinity War mini, so I suggest the best way of reading this is to read the first issue of War, then the first issue of Watch (toward the middle of the trade) then to just go back and forth and see where the Watch issues fit into the War storyline and read them as you come accross them. Once you get past the awkward layout, it's a good read.

-Marvel Comics: MARVELS

An instant classic. All Marvel fans must be required to read this. Don't go in expecting some action packed wonder... but rather a study of the normal people of the world when the heroes or "marvels" came about. Alex Ross' art doesn't hurt either. This would be in my top 10 favorate reads.

Tied for my #1 favorate mini of all time! I will warn you, it is a large, deep, indepth, and a somewhat difficult read, but it's worth it. I don't like the artist, but his stuff fits this story and adds to it I feel. I won't say much on the story, as anything can ruin something for you, but this is just a great read. It sucked me in so much that I sat for hours and just studied every bit of it my first time reading it. Then when I was done, I read it again. Loved it!

-Universe X

A lot of people crack on the sequels to Earth X, and while I agree that they weren't as good, they're still good and interesting. Paradise X I can see being kinda off, but Universe X was still good in my opinion.

-Batman Knightfall Vol.1 Broken Bat

Haven't read this since I was a kid, but I remember really liking it. I read up until Batman's fall, and for some reason I never got around to reading the rest of the storyline. I'll have to do that.

-DC Identity Crisis

I don't much care for DC. It just couldn't get my attention. Then my brother-in-law said "you have got to read this Crisis thing" (he was new to comics). I thought he was talking about some of those Crisis on Infinite Earths stories and I already knew I wasn't interested, but then he pulled this story out on me and I declined reading it. Eventually he won me over and I read it. To this day this is one of my favorate stories of any media. It was very touching and humanistic. I'm still not a huge DC fan but this book made me at least appreciate them and even lead me to reading other DC stuff and actually enjoying it. I'm a 100% sold out Marvel Fan, and this story beat out most other Marvel stories and is probably within my top 5 favorate stories. Read it, you'll love it. And when you're done, go read Green Lantern Rebirth (which follows this loosely) and you'll be just as impressed.

-Superman: For Tomorrow

As someone else said earlier, beautiful art, lacking story. I felt it started strong and interesting, but fell quickly until it was boring. I bought every issue, but the last 3/4 of it was just for the art.

Well, I hope that helps.

You might want to consider God Loves Man Kills, Hooky, Hercules Full Circle and its prequel whose title I don't have available right now. The Hercules titles are set in the future and are somewhat comedic but one of them, I think the first, has a Hercules vs Galactus match.

those sound awesome  I'll check them out

It's a mediocre Austen story that is a little uncharacteristic of the JLA.

The artwork seems pretty nice, but I agree on the story...it doesn't seem to be anything special.

That's cool, Sparta. Yesterday, I found a great deal. I went to two Half-Price Books, and at the first one, I got some neat comics from the early 80's for 30 cents or less. (Even got a copy of Dr. Strange #8, which has a cover price of 25 cents for half that!) But, my real luck came at the second store. Outside, they had a small comic box that read, "Conan and Friends Comic Bulk Box Only $30.00." I've been wanting to get back issues of Conan, but they've always been a bit more than I wanted to spend. It was a grab box, and you couldn't open it to see condition or comics. I got it, and here is what it contained:

Conan The Barbarian #'s 44, 65, 66, 70, 75, 76(X2), 77, 78(X2), 79-83, 84(X2), 85-93, 107, 110, 112, 113, 115, 125-133, 135, 136(X2), 137, 138(X2), 139, 140(X2), 141-149, 150(X2), 151, 152(X2), 153(X2), 154(X2), 156-162, 164-166, 170-172, 173(X2), 174(X2), 175, 182, 183, 184(X2), 187, 189, 235, 263, 264

Tarzan #'s 5-9, 12, 14, 15, 17, 19

Weird War Tales #62

With all the comics I purchased, it took me quite a while in bagging them. Most of them are in Fine condition, I'd say. (And, I always say MileHighComics, Fine Condition. Most of their comics they claim are Fine I would have labeled VeryFine.)

Anyway, you got some real great collections there. If you don't mind, I'd love to know how much you got them for. Some are so new, they were probably a steal. I think Marvel is really charging way too much for their TPB's lately. I bought the Champions volumes and What If? volumes, and it's hard to believe how much they cost regular price.

Definitely read the What If? volumes. It makes you see how good What If? was when they first came out. Plus, they were smart enough to make them double-sized tales. I've read Vol. 1, and they really still hold up today.

I loved the Dr. Strange Vs. Dracula storyline when it first came out in the 80's. One day, I'll read it again, and see if it still holds up.

The John Byrne issues were some of the best Fantastic Four storys ever. I remember when the Marvel Megasize comic came out and they were reprinting them. They were still good. I really think it was John Byrne at his best.

Now, you have to buy Vol. 1 of Operation: Galactic Storm. It's really been over-looked; and, the results of that story should have had more lasting impact on Avengers and Marvel continuity today.

To me, the DC books, especially those old JLA stories, really aren't anything too special. I always say I need to re-read Knightfall and the accompanying volumes; I do think they won't hold up to how much I liked them at first. I think my favorite Batman tie-in was when they had the Earthquake and resulting No Man's Land.

That sounds like a great deal Phaed  You are going to have a ton of Conan to read for the next while lol looks like we'll both be busy reading. I already read Operation Galactic Storm part 1, and I thought it was pretty awesome. The Doctor Strange vs Dracula just seemed too awesome to pass up...honestly...Doc Strange and Dracula...thats radical. The JLA tpb's look nice, but I haven't read any of them yet. One thing i've noticed is that DC uses the cheap comic paper for most of their tpb's while Marvel uses the much nicer glossy paper for the most part, and thats why I think Marvel trades cost more. Including shipping, all the trades worked out to be about 10$ each.

I'll follow that same 1-5 ranking (holding 5 to a very high standard), eliminating the ones I haven't read

-Xmen: Age of Apocalypse Vol.1
-Xmen: Age of Apocalypse Vol.2
-Xmen: Age of Apocalypse Vol.3
-Xmen: Age of Apocalypse Vol.4
(as I recall, volume 1 collects, I think, one of the AoA tie ins after the initial AoA and wasn't that good, but the other volumes should be great. The ten year anniversary sequel miniseries blew, though

-Xmen: X-Cutioner's Song - 3
-Xmen: Days of the Future Past - 3
-Avengers: Ultron Unleashed - 4
-Avengers Forever - 4

-Amazing Spider-man: Vol.1 Coming Home - 4
-Amazing Spider-man: Vol.2 Revelations - 5
-Amazing Spider-man: Vol.5 Senseless Violence - this one is actually "Peter Parker Spider-Man", not Amazing

-Daredevil Visionaries: Frank Miller Vol.1 - 4
-Daredevil Visionaries: Frank Miller Vol.2 - 4
-Hulk Visionaries: Peter David Vol.1 - 3
-Hulk Visionaries: Peter David Vol.2 - 3
-Hulk Visionaries: Peter David Vol.3 - 3

-Fantastic Four: Heroes Reborn - 4 (so sue me, I liked some of Heroes Reborn)
-Thor Visionaries: Walt Simonson - 3
-Xfactor Visionaries: Peter David Vol.1 - 4
-Excalibur Classics: Vol.1 - 4
-Infinity Gauntlet - 4
-Infinity War - 3

-Marvel/DC: Crossover Classics Vol.2
-Marvel/DC: Crossover Classics Vol.3
-Marvel/DC: Crossover Classics Vol.4
Not sure which of these I've read, but most Marvel/DC books are just "meh"

-Marvel Comics: MARVELS - Alex Ross? 5
-Earth X - 4
-Universe X - 3
-What If?: Vol 1 - 3
-Contest of Champions II - 2

-DC Identity Crisis - 5 (agree with Jew Hob, if you enjoy this, read Green Arrow 1-3, which takes palce before it, and Green Lantern: Rebirth, which takes place after.)
-DC Universe: Stories of Alan Moore - 5

-JLA: Greatest Stories Ever Told
-JLA: Golden Perfect
-JLA: Hereby Elects
-JLA: Trial By Fire
-JLA: Terror Incognita
-JLA: Pain of the Gods
-JLA: Tower of Babel - 4
-JLA: New World Order
-JLA: Year One - 4
I've read most of these, but from the top of my head I forget which ones are which. Most JLA is decent, at the very least, with Year One and Tower of Babel being two of the best

-Superman: For Tomorrow - 3, pretty but dull
-Superman/Batman Vol.1: Public Enemies - 3 fun, but not excellent IMO

Wow, okay, I don't even know what to say to all that JH! haha thanks for taking the time to write that all out. Everybody so far has really gotten me stoked for some tpb reading! That's strange about volume 1 of AOA, but i've never read them so i'll take your word and start out at volume 2.

The Dark Phoenix is one of my favorite storylines...it was a must purchase for me and i'm glad I did. It's funny that you mentioned we have similar tastes because I was just thinking the same thing lol.

I'm really excited for Mutant Genesis because Jim Lee is probably my favorite X-men artist of all time, and I really wanted a tpb of his. Plus Magneto and Omega Red...that just rules.

I wasn't to sure about Fall of the Mutants, but it was a first print of the book so I really wanted it. Plus i'm a huge Archangel fan so I needed to get the issues with Apoc and the horsemen.

It seems that we have the same taste in tpb's for the most part lol i'm even more excited to read them all now. Is there anything I don't have that you would recommend?

I'll follow that same 1-5 ranking (holding 5 to a very high standard), eliminating the ones I haven't read

Thanks for the info Elijya! You're like the comic guru around here so i'm happy you think highly of some of the choices I made. I'm about to read Identity Crisis, so if that blows me away, i'll definatley get the Green Lantern and Green Arrow books. In all your infinite wisdom, is there a tpb on my list that in your opinion i'm crazy for not having? (A really awesome Spider-man tpb with a classic villain would be nice, but I can't really find any)

Everyone seems to be going nuts for Ross' work in MARVELS. What can I expect from that?

heh, dude, did you just ask me for a recommendation? that's a dangerous game right there ;)

Well, you're clearly a strictly superhero fan, a Marvelite who's just now begining to broaden his horizons with other superheroes, particularly DC, so I'll throw out what is hands down the greatest superhero comic in existence, Invincible:

http://superherohype.com/forums/showpost.php?p=6101625&postcount=2
(I'll link this since I'm sure some peopel are tired of it getting reposted so much)

I was going to give the 1-5 rating on many of those titles...but, it's been so long since I read them, that I'm not sure what I remember about them hold up anymore. Case in point, I like X-Cutioner's Song when it came out; but, compared to a lot of 90's crap, I might have been skewed on my judgement back then. After 30 years of reading comics, I just forget many of these stories. I was trying to think about how many comics I might have read over all these years. I mean, it has to be in the tens of thousands. Sometimes I think, "Why do I keep buying new comics? I could spend the rest of my life re-reading all the old comics laying around my house...and, all of the collections I've bought these past three years." I swear, this thing called Comic Collecting is a damn addiction.

haha wow, I can't believe i've been here for so long and i've never noticed the recommendations thread! I'm a total ****** lol. Invincible sounds good Elijya. I just read Marvel Zombies, and before that I read Walking Dead Vol 1 and 2, so I am a Kirkman fan, and he does Invincible so thats good.

I'm not entirely a strict superhero fan...just about 98% lol I like other stuff, but I always go back to the superheroes. I've been a comic book fan for a long, but like you said, mainly a Marvel fan. I've read DC stuff before, and I know a lot about the DC characters, so i'm not just delving into DC now, but I will admit I definatley don't know as much about DC as I do Marvel.

30 years? your lucky! I wish I was around in the prime of comics. I'm 21 now, and i've been a comic fan non-stop since I was about 6, so a good 15 years. I have a lot of comics, but I was mostly about the comic cards, and stuff like that. I've only somewhat recently become obsessed with TPB's but they are just too amazing to pass up. I can agree with you that comic collecting is an addiction lol.

Sparta, when you get a call and someone asks for you, do you go "THIS IS SPARTA!" ?

Sparta, when you get a call and someone asks for you, do you go "THIS IS SPARTA!" ?

hahaha no, but I should when 300 comes out :p then it'd probably seem less freakish...actually no...it probably wouldn't lol

I have Waid's JLA year one tpb, that's the one I meant when I listed it.

It does? Well then that baby right there gets a 5 just based on that. The Thanos Quest is probably one of the best Marvel stories of all time

Yup, I was talking with another poster and recommending picking up IG saga and The Thanos Quest to go along with it. He mentioned that rebirth of Thanos included The Thanos Quest.

It sure as hell is  :D

Thanks for the recommendations everyone  I'll check them all out

You guys are getting me excited for the Thanos Quest! I can't wait to get my Rebirth of Thanos TPB!

Does the Infinity War take place right after the Infinity Gauntlet?

I don't recall exactly how long but within a few months. I don't think that they ever mention the exact time span in story.

not immediately, but close enough. There's an interim period that deals with the formation of the Infinity Watch, but it's not collected as far as I know. You'll be fine without it.

You can go right from Thanos Quest, to the Infinity Gauntlet, to the Infinity War

After that is the Infinity Crusade, but that's considered pretty bad, and probably won't ever be collected. If you enjoy the others and are curious enough to keep reading regardless, it shouldn't be too hard to track the back issues down for a low price

many years later there was the Infinity Abyss, but I've never read that and don't know anything about it. It's by Jim Starlin, same as the other volumes, and he does excellent work, particularly with Thanos. If you come to really like the character (and I'm sure you will), that leads into Marvel Universe: The End, and then the Thanos ongoing series they attempted, but that didn't even last a year (they also replaced Starlin halfway through). It's quite good
Looks like these trades are getting a little rare and out of print, as there are only used copies on amazon with high prices
