Once Upon A Time In Wonderland

I may be wrong because I haven't seen any of the movies in ages, but I thought this wasn't the first time that the rabbit has went behind Alice's back to the queen. That's why I wasn't surprised. I thought the Red Queen was stunning, although, she seemed like Regina-lite to me.

I didn't like Cheshire being so vicious, and I didn't like how we barely got to see his abilities. I'm used to him teleporting around and floating with a grin on his face. This one just seemed like a giant basic cat with the way he chased after Alice without using any powers, except when he appeared at first.

I also wasn't fond of them using music from OUAT since this show should be its own thing, but the music they did make specifically for the show was pretty enjoyable. Like the "old-timey" music they had for when Alice was in the Asylum.

EDIT: And was anyone thinking "Black Widow" when Alice was taking down those men in the Asylum? That girl was serving up ass-whuppings left and right. If I was the Knave in that situation, I would've been like, "Daaaamn, girl!", in my Chris Tucker voice.

I thought it was awesome that they played against expectations with the rabbit. "Oh, you think the cute CGI bunny is just going to be comic relief? Guess again! He's a real threat to our heroes."

I don't think the White Rabbit is as "out of the box" as people are thinking... i mean.. he worked for the Queen in the animated film... and his alliances were really never with Alice, in fact.. he didn't seem to like her a whole bunch.

He also was a bit of a grey area character in the Disney/Burton live action film

That's what I thought. Although, he seems to like Alice to some extent in this show.

Yeah, he is. I mean the way he silently looked at the Queen as she talked down to him was downright sad.

Yeah, that was extreme. It was like they were purposely making it seem like they were walking through a video game or something...

But complaints I've seen about stuff like the Cheshire Cat? I'm sure the creators are SO sorry they don't have Avatar money so that they could properly render a full CGI character to this audience's approval. :o For what their budget probably is, I thought both the White Rabbit and Cheshire Cat looked pretty damn good.

Yeah I thought the White Rabbit and Cheshire Cat was fantastic, some of the best CG I've seen on TV in a while.

Every time they mentioned the hookah smoking caterpillar I was hoping to hear the song by Jefferson Airplane.

The whole Wonderland, uh, saga I guess was never my cup of tea (no pun intended). I disliked stories as a child that had children in a bizzare land with psychedelic rules. Thus my aversion to H.R. Puff'n'Stuff or Willy Wonka. So I did not know that the Rabbit has a rep for being loyal to the Queen. Still, after being raised on Snarf and Orko it was a nice change of pace to see a chararacter that I assumed would be comic relief to actually be a subtle menace to the heroes, or to at least have more layers than initially expected. Like Rigel on FARSCAPE.

New episode tonight.

Still haven't watched the pilot. I enjoy the hell out of OUAT, but for some reason I don't have much interest in this.

It seems that most posters here believe Alice comes from her own "world" in the OUAT-verse, separate and discrete from our own. Tonite however she mentions she learned to play a "Mozart sonata" as a young girl. So... alternate universe Mozart then? Continuity slip up never to be thought of again? I really need this answered by someone who knows: Is thhis Alice from "our" world, but a different time, or her own discrete world? Have the producers actually made a statement on this yet?

And on another note, Agrabah... I had assumed it was in the FTL, seeing how Espisito's Jinn mentions being from there. So Jaffar was a resident of the FTL originally, I assume. Did he miss Regina's curse because he was in Wonderland? Is his "dungeon"/villain's lair in WL or in the post curse FTL? Btw, I'm calling it now, the old man in the cell next to Cyrus is either the ex-ruler of Agrabah or Jafar in disguise.

Lastly a thought occured to me about OUAT original recipe while watching this ep and it concerns Fairies. They seem a somewhat ubiquitous magical species, now don't they? In FTL and WL. (Who was the actress that played The Knaves ex?) I am not on the "OUAT Blue Fairy is Eeeevil!" team as of yet but having Fairies in WL, and Tinkerbell in Neverland now gives off a suspicious smell to me... A little. Just a wild Duchovnian riff here, but there COULD be something in the idea of Blue being the author of more than we know so far. After all... they are called FAIRY TALES.

I don't think it explicitly said or was shown that Agrabah was in the Enchanted Forest. At least, there wasn't enough evidence to prove that. The original genie could have certainly ended up in the Enchanted Forest the same way Cyrus ended up in Wonderland. I'm still willing to bet Agrabah is it's own realm.

As far as Alice's realm - I'm almost positive Horowitz and Kitsis said in a interview a while back during season two of OUAT that the Victorian England Alice (and Wendy) were from was not our Victorian England.

That's what I was thinking, recalling Disney's Aladdin.

Speaking of which, when Alice said she had no where else to go, Cyrus said she had the whole "world. I can show it to you." :awesome:

So OUAT Wendy is also from Alice's world? But I thought there was a caption in the ep with Baelfire arriving from FTL that said it was London, and they gave a date, or at least a year?

Thought this episode topped the first.

No, she was from our world (as per 'word of God' statements from Adam and Eddy, just as the info that Alice is from a fictional Victorian England was a 'word of God' statement).

See, this really felt like the second half of a whole premiere split in two. It was good though. Nice to see the Red Queen showing some cunning in dealing with Jafar. Though I think she is no where at his level, so far.

See now it makes less sense to me that Alice should have to be from a fictional Victorian England, but Wendy and her family were from our world. It seems unnecessary. Could somebody track down these producer comments that say Alice is from a separate world from ours.

I'm glad they managed to avoid any particularly over the top CG set pieces this episode.

I already have... at least twice.

However, here we go again:

The relevant comments are about halfway down the page.

Naveen is so boss as Jafar. Others have said that the Queen and he are Rumple and Regina lite, but their relationship so far is not like that at all. Maybe it's cuz I like the actor so much, but I think I am going to be pleased each week with the Knave of Hearts. With so much talk of "true love" and "magic" it's nice to have a Han Solo-ish type around to bring a little bit of cynicism.

^ It's all good. :)

If you want, I can also repost Adam and Eddy's comments about Wendy as well.

Ugh...of course Jafar isn't evil for no reason. Couldn't just be power hungry could he? So tired of them trying to give every villain a reason to be the way they are and 9/10 it is because of love.

Though I did love Jafars intro to the episode. And we have fairies in Wonderland (not to mention they used one of Tinks friends from her dtvs)

Well I hope that this is not the case with Big J here. Though I must say that while Regina was twisted by lost love (and the controlling "love" of a parent), Rumple on OUAT was turned villainous by his grasping for power. Sure, his long possible redemption is about love (for his son, for Belle) but his turning to darkness was nurtured in his weakness and cowardice, which is why his grasp for power was so tight he let his son go. In many ways Cora was similar. She ripped her own heart out for the sake of power. I hope that the villains in WL are also allowed to be villains. I mean, they can have a bit of a sob story, the producers are right, everybody was a child once. I think the mark of the difference between hero and villain is as they say, leaving childish things behind in childhood. Or as my mother always says: GET OVER YOURSELF!! Jafar could have a terrible life as a young child that leads him on a journey towards the dark arts and being a villain. It would be and explanation though, not an excuse.

Anyone else think the Knave lost his heart in more ways than one?
