The Avengers only one female team member?

Scarlet Witch is licensed by FOX. I would like to see another female character, but I'm not too disappointed about it. There was only one female a part of the original Avengers anyway.

Black Widow has been in and out of the Avengers since the 70's. She was there for most of the 90's and was even the leader at one point.

But when you think of BIG TIME Avengers characters and fan favorites, is she one that immediately pops up in your mind? Not in mine. Possibly in yours. When I think of BIG TIME female Avengers the following pop up in my head long before Black Widow: Wasp, Scarlet Witch, Tigra, Ms. Marvel, Spider-Woman and Firestar (guess when I got REALLY into the Avengers?). Black Widow always pops up in my mind for SHIELD or Daredevil. Not really the Avengers, despite knowing she was a member.

I was hoping for Wasp/Janet Pym in the Avengers, since she is rather easy to incorporate into the team, and they don't even need to get an expensive actress to play her. Looks we will all just gonna gawk at ScarJo throughout the movie, then.

Btw, it's nice to see ScarJo in the Avengers, while her hubby Ryan Reynolds is doing GL over at DC.

If there aren't anymore female avengers(i'm starting to think Wasp is being saved to appear in a solo Antman flick), knowing Whedon we'll get at least a strong female villainess(maybe Enchantress or someone like that).

I'm also pissed that War Machine won't be in it in any capacity. I would have him doing recon or something in the opening scene and get f**ked up by the Hulk. It would make things more personal for Stark. Whole subplot writes itself from there.

Why would that matter? There's enough Avengers members with all sexual, racials types that have existed. They would pop at some point in the franchise.

Since she's going to be a part of the Avengers I believe there's no doubt she'll play a bigger role.

That was an awesome scene and yet people hated her. I thought she was fine in the film and Scarjo did a pretty good job with her. In the film they mentioned that she can speak Russian, and her real name is Russian, so thats fine with me. I think she'll be great in The Avengers.

I'd be down with a War Machine or even just Rhodey cameo, but I really hope nothing like the above scenario takes place. I've seen enough of the "black friend gets hurt and/or killed so protagonist can seek out justice" thing in movies to last me several lifetimes...

I don't mind Black Widow at all, she just wouldn't be my first choice for a female Avenger. I actually like her character, but I just think that another more prominent or Avengers-associated female character would have been a better choice.

I do have a problem with her character as depicted in Iron Man 2. It's not that she was too young or that she didn't have a Russian accent, it was that she was essentially there just for the hell of it for much of the film. Scarlett was given nothing to do, and her character was very blank. Yes, her fight scene(s) were cool, and yes she looked hot in the outfit, but that wasn't enough for me.

That's actually a major problem with all of Iron Man 2, and not really character specific. (I also thought the War Machine recast was pointless since he wasn't given much to do either, Whiplash was underutilized, Justin Hammer was annoying/overused, Pepper Potts was wasted, etc. But back on topic we go!)

Opposite opinions here. Loved BW in IM2 and was bored with WM.

According to the plot, BW could not have come in fighting at the beginning. I think we don't stop and think that we knew going in that Scar-Jo was BW. We aren't supposed to know that until late in the movie.
