I remember one of the movie sites (either Deadline or THR) saying that the reason that he backed out of SWATH was because of money disagreements. Personally, I think he's just being picky.

And that was his reasons or not joining Snow White and the Huntsman and Man of Steel. I mean, I hope won't be the case where he has to backtrack his pickiness if the well runs too dry. We've seen it happen before with many actors in te past.

Oh I didn't know he backed out of MoS because of money issues too. Is he just anti-blockbusters? I mean he's doing stuff like A Dangerous Method and On The Road and I'm pretty sure he's barely paid there.

Casting Woody Harrelson is a stroke of genius. He was absolutely terrifying in Rampart.

You're right. But I would consider 'Out of the Furnace' to be smaller fare though. I don't know. Yeah, you're right..he might be just picky.

According to Kris Tapley of InContention who has read the script, Scott Cooper changed almost the entire script. I'm personally relieved since the original draft (The Low Dweller) had some issues.

He and Michael Shannon were the top 2 performances in 2011 for me.

True. I just hope that he doesn't completely disappear and does movies like every 3 years or so. :(

I actually have The Low Dweller on my computer. Hmm..I do know that the original writer had his own Cinderella story of his own. I I'm not mistaken, he was unemployed and still lived with his parents (nothing wrog with that) when he wrote it.

Yup, that's him. I think he's getting some writing gigs now too. Pretty awesome for a first time writer. I read it back when Leo was attached and re-read it again when Bale's name came up. It was good but it suffers from cliches. You can definitely tell that Cooper made a huge makeover because almost everything we've heard so far is not on the script. Even the character names and setting are different. I wonder though how much credit he'll get when I suspect the only thing that remained from his version is the general premise.

Yeah, I think the problem with modern-day screenwriting is...over-explaining everything and staying in the comfort zone with cliches. I think troupes are in every movie, but give it a little twist so it can come off as 'new' though it's an 'tried but true' idea. Like 'Drive'. :)

There were so many great lead performances last year that were completely ignored just because Hollywood had such a hard-on for The Artist. I'm not trying to knock Jean Dujardin's performance in that film, but IMO he wasn't the best of the year... I don't even know if I'd say he was in the top 5. Fassbender wins that award for me, for his brilliant turn in Shame, and I'd also rank Dominic Cooper up there for his awesome performance in The Devil's Double.

Awww yeah, Woody will make an awesome villain. I'm glad it's not Billy Bob, because that would make this movie TOO similar to Faster.

Yeah but both the people who saw Faster probably wont be seeing this. :oldrazz:

American Psycho reunion! :funny:

Willem Dafoe Joins ‘Out Of The Furnace’

Willem Dafoe has joined the cast of Relativity Media‘s thriller currently entitled Out Of The Furnace. Dafoe joins previously announced cast members Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Zoe Saldana, Sam Shepard, Woody Harrelson and Forest Whitaker. The movie written and directed by Scott Cooper started shooting April 13 in Braddock, Penn. In the gritty tale based on an initial version by Brad Inglesby titled The Low Dwellers, Bale and Affleck play brothers who live in the Rust Belt: one lands in prison, the other joins a ruthless criminal enterprise.

I hope for a American Psycho like meeting. Preferrably over steak and sweat.

Interesting. I hope Dafoe plays a good guy in this. Not that he isn't a great villain, but he does that so often that I find him more interesting when he's a redeeming character. I still need to see The Hunter... that movie looked really good.

Alberto Iglesias To Score Scott Cooper’s 'Out Of The Furnace' Starring Christian Bale

Two of the finest scores of 2011 belonged to one man: Alberto Iglesias. The composer who frequently works with Pedro Almodovar didn't get an Oscar nomination for his work on "The Skin I Live In" (though he should have), but did get the nod for his equally impressive work on "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy." And now his talents have been enlisted for another high profile film, and one that is quite different than those two pictures.

Iglesias will score "Crazy Heart" director Scott Cooper's temporarily titled "Out Of The Furnace." Featuring a ridiculously great cast -- Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Zoe Saldana, Woody Harrelson, Sam Sheparrd, Zoe Saldana, Forest Whitaker -- the film centers on Russell (Bale) and his younger brother Rodney (Affleck), who live in the economically depressed Rust Belt, and have always dreamed of escaping and finding better lives. But when a cruel twist of fate lands Russell in prison, his brother is lured into one of the most violent and ruthless crime rings in the Northeast – a mistake that will almost cost him everything. Once released, Russell must choose between his own freedom, or risk it all to seek justice for his brother.

Iglesias' impressive CV also boasts work for Steven Soderbergh ("Che"), Oliver Stone ("Commandante") and Fernando Meirelles ("The Constant Gardner"), but we're interested to see what he'll pull together for this gritty little flick.

"Out Of The Furnace" shot this spring and there's not release date yet. We'd say the fall festival circuit might be too soon for the film to premiere, and while stranger things have happened, this likely a better bet for 2013.

So after The Dark Knight Rises how many films are coming out with Bale in them?

No worries! :D Hope we get a trailer with one of the summer tentpoles to give the movie some exposure.

Malick had a hand in the title eventually being "Out of the Furnace". :funny:

Indeed, "Out of the Furnace" went through a couple of iterations before settling on its moniker. While writing the script, Cooper thought "Under a Black Sun" might be an apt title, a reference to the sun straining light through the airborne soot of a blast furnace heyday. (The script even once featured Soundgarden's 1994 track "Black Hole Sun" as an allusion to this.) Director's chairs on the Braddock, Pennsylvania set sported another title, "Dust to Dust," though a potential copyright concern nixed that. Eventually "Out of the Furnace" was settled upon, a title actor Sam Shepard (who stars in the film) and legendary director Terrence Malick told Cooper they thought was perfect. "I'd say Terrence Malick and Sam Shepard know a thing or two about titles," Cooper says with a laugh.

Relativity Moves Scott Cooper’s ‘Out Of The Furnace’ Into Heat Of Oscar Season With November 27 Limited Release

EXCLUSIVE: Sensing it has a movie that can create heat during Oscar season, Relativity is moving the Scott Cooper-directed revenge thriller Out Of The Furnace from October 4 to a limited release on November 27, expanding that run beginning December 6th. The film stars Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Zoe Saldana, Sam Shepard and Willem Dafoe. Crazy Heart helmer Cooper wrote the script with Brad Ingelsby. Bale plays a simple man in a blue collar job at the local steel mill, who cares for his terminally ill father at night. His brother (Affleck) returns from Iraq and falls in with a ruthless crime ring. When he disappears, that simple man takes matters into his own hands, and sets out to seek justice for his sibling. Appian Way’s Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Killoran produced with Scott Free’s Ridley Scott, with Michael Costigan also producing with Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh. This has been a hot project since Ingelsby first sold the spec in a big money deal that came with DiCaprio attached to star and Scott to direct. The elements have shifted, but the Cormac McCarthy-style stark and simple revenge tale element has remained intact.

Relativity production president Robbie Brenner said that Cooper “has made a powerful, moving and brilliant film that we think will generate a tremendous amount of conversation and attention during this awards season. We are confident that this new date will give Scott’s film the platform and support it deserves,” she said.
