I got to be honest a media blackout for a movie of this size sounds ridiculous. The budget on this movie is like $250 million, media blackout is the last thing they should be doing. Comic-Con is great and all but its only a small sampling of the audience. They need to release some stuff soon to start building the anticipation.

Avatar didn't release a damn thing until 4 months before its release date. Now I agree that July isn't December but I disagree that movies have to start promotion a year ahead of time.

Works for Lord of the Rings :p .

The reason Avatar can do that is because its James freaking Cameron. Love the guy but Del Toro isn't Cameron.

Early promotion is always good , just don't spoil everything.
Prometheus for me is a good example of a movie being promoted early on ( well not a year early LOL) and still not spoiling everything.

Plus Avatar had a different promotion then then most movies.
For Avatar Cameron needed to convice the world of 3-d , hence why in June 2009 James Cameron first showed footage of Avatar at the Cine- Expo ( Europe's equivalent of SHowest) , July 2009 footage was shown at CC followed by Avatar Day somehwere in Aug or Sept. 2009.
Avatar Day was also a worldwide event .
And in Nov 2009 they had a pretty long ass trailer ( dunno the exact time but it was somewhere around 3.5 min mark).

I think an unusual marketing approach like what WB did TDK and TDKR , to show the prologue with certain movies , can definately spread the world fast.
Hobbit would definately be a good candidate.

I hope he keeps his British one but I have a feeling they'll use the American one. His British one is

I don't think he can still speak in his original British accent.

His been in the U.S so long now that his regular accent is a British/American mid atlantic hybrid now.

I like how Rinko towers over Day.

Yeah but take away her heels and she's probably the same height.

Awesome stuff, what's the shooting locations again? Is it just Toronto?

Also I was reading this that was really interesting.

Del Toro drew inspiration from Francisco Goya's The Colossus, and hopes to evoke the same "sense of awe" with the film's battles.
