Paranormal Activity

How was I condescending? I was just saying, this movie wasn't scary in general regardless of religious beliefs even to the people who do believe in these things/claim to have seen these things. I wasn't talking down to you or anyone else.

The sentence of your mother's experience with unexplained phenomena sounded like a joke directed at me.

And, while that may be true for other horror films for you (which I didn't know it was by the time of my posting) it begs the question--why would you go see a movie called "Paranormal Activity" if the title itself infers the existence of ghosts which would, blatantly be off-putting to you in the first place?

At first, incredibly good word of mouth. Then I was invited to go see a matinee showing with friends. Nothing wrong with that. I didn't make myself clear last post -- ghosts aren't incredibly off-putting to me; I only find films involving demons or any religious creatures to usually be not scary at all.

I'm still a little lost as to why the facts I've stated are still being considered opinions...

But okay...since I'm being told to respect others opinions and that I may not be correct...I will concede the argument.

The commercials may not have revealed the scares...not at all.

The noises may in fact not have been a tell tale sign that something scary was about to happen.

But yet again my very simple argument is misconstrued...

[BLACKOUT]IF the camera antagonized the demon (I dont think it did to any extent) then that means the camera HELPED the demon achieve the gal it spent twenty years trying to do. The camera was the best thing that ever happened to that demon and its plans...so WHY would the demon attack the camera????????????? It has NO reason at all to do so, other than to give the audience a cheap scare.

No matter which way you look at it, the ending...the girl/demon heading teeth first towards the camera...makes no sense.[/BLACKOUT]

Ah, well, it wasn't :woot: sorry if it came off that way. I don't do that. I understood that if you didn't believe in such things it might not scare you, but was just going on to say that even people who have experienced similar things to those presented in the movie it wasn't very scary either. Though at one scene she nearly tore my arm off squeezing it so hard. :hehe:

The word of mouth was what sucked me in too, I have to admit I was more nervous/hesitant hearing about the film in the lobby from all of the teenagers that were freaking about it than I was actually was watching the movie!

I just watched it and it scared the hell out of me.

I loved the ending...which i just found was the alternate one and not the one shown in theaters.

Having watched the ''real'' ending on youtube i think there's no doubt the alternate ending is 10 times better and more fitting to the overall movie.

Anyway, for myself,it freaked me out several times(drag scene especially) so i can say that the hype is more or less justified.

All is good, friend.

Haha, I'm fifteen so I'm used to good hype from every big film that comes out. :csad:

When I hear comments such as "TF2 is such an amazing film!" in school, it's really hard to hold the film snob in me back.

I'm gonna give this one last shot.

1. The trailers revealed some of the scares: Fact.
2. The noises were direct signals that something was about to happen: Fact.

Those 2 factors ruined the movie: Opinion.
For many people, those 2 facts above did not hinder their enjoyment or appreciation of the movie. They are of a differing opinion than you regarding the effect of the above facts had on the movie. You believe they had a negative effect. Others do not.

Get it?

[blackout]If the camera antagonized the demon, than its pissed at the camera, so why wouldnt attack the camera, especially after it already has the girl, which means any use the demon had for the cam is gone[/blackout]

Its still a cheap scare, but practically every horror movie for the past ten years has cheap scares in them. I do believe the original ending was better

I never said that the ruining of the film was a fact...it was ruined for me. I am not everyone, and never claimed to be.

So basically we've come all this way to agree that I was right all along.

Okay...I may be wrong...the demon needed the camera...the camera helped it...and that infuriated the demon to the point of petty vandalism. Demons tend to be shallow like that.

You deemed your opinion "right" because they were "supported" by those facts. But their support is merely your opinion.

I think its more like, the camera pissed off the demon because it was one step in an attempt to stop it, but by watching it the couple became more afraid of it. The psychic implied that fear could make it stronger. it was much more indirect relationship between the two. And if fear is truly a factor in its strength jumping at the camera as it did would certainly scare anyone who happened to see it (hypothetical)

I actually like the new ending better. The other two don't make sense. From the very beginning of the movie, we are told that the demon "wants Katie," by the psychic. This is supported by numerous things (the demon's "Diane," warning that he will kill her if she tries to run, the picture of her, etc). The So what good does possessing her and making her slit her own throat or putting her in a position to be gunned down do? The demon clearly does not want to hurt Katie (it had many chances to do so, plus, remember, it broke Micah's picture and left Katie's intact). So in that regard getting her killed or forcing her to kill herself really doesn't align with the rest of the movie. Possessing her does.

No, my stance is that my facts are correct. That is all. My opinion is that, given these facts, this movie is poorly made (in post production...I think Id like the original version).

The movie was billed as one of the scariest films ever, and every scare in it was given away in previews, and by noises preceding them. I am not sure how that makes this movie scary at all. It is interesting. It is well made. It is not scary in my opinion. I blame all of my problems with the film on the studio sticking their nose in and messing around with a good thing.

For someone whose opinion is fact, you certainly do contradict yourself a lot.

I gotta agree, I think adding the quote of saying this was the scariest movie is was a way of suckering in the regular average movie goer and will believe anything that's said in quotes or from a movie poster.

I mean I don't find slamming doors that scary or hearing a door slam all the time. I hear doors slamming all the time, giving its from the neighbors next door, plus I hear my highway floor creak sometimes when its just me alone.

The demon's true motive is never revealed only hinted had, implied really. The psychic makes educated guesses. Micah asks :Why not give it what is wants." Psychic says "cause it MIGHT want Kate." (paraphrasing ). But Micah defined demons with the book saying they were beings bent on bringing malice. Thats certainly what he got with the ending of her being gunned down.

Will you stop it with the marketing campaign. Every horror movie has a quote from someone saying scariest movie ever. Every action movie has a quote from someone most thrilling ride ever. Nothing in the marketing campaign has differed that much from the norm except the "Demand It" which makes it the audiences fault in the first place.

Ugh...

I stated facts..

People said that is my opinion.

I said, then well...my opinions are facts.

In other words...I was screwing around...

No one is disputing ANY of the facts I laid out...which is funny...because people are still saying its opinion.

My OPINION that this movie is lame and the FACTS that the scares were given away by noises and commercials are two different things...things that some here cant seem to separate.

No I will not! When a movie prides itself on being the scariest movie ever, it better be the scariest damn movie ever! And when they show crowd footage of people being scared out of their minds it better as scary as they think it is.

Sp I'm just allowed to come in here and talk about it as people who like it. It's a opinion live with it.

Your opinion is fine. Hate the movie, Its just a movie I could care less. The content of the movie is completely open to criticism. But of all the movies that have ended in piss-poor quality, this movies marketing campaign comes under criticism. What was it suppose to say? Come see the mediocre horror of the year. EVERY MOVIE MARKETS ITSELF AS THE BEST MOVIE EVER. You cant hold that against it, and it is one of the biggest jabs I see all over the internet. "Wow the studio really knew how to market this garbage.Marketing campaing this. Marketing campaign that." They marketed it the same way they market every movie. If it is a constant in every movie that entire point is moot.

Maybe so, but it was certainly implied that hurting Katie was not its objective. It had 15 years to hurt Katie. It kept pictures of Katie. It tore Micah's picture while leaving Katie's intact. I just think there was more evidence in the movie to imply that the demon would've preferred to not kill Katie.

I havent seen a horror movie in a long time that hasnt used noise in some way in order to scare

The noises werent used to scare people...the noises were used to warn people in advance of the scares.

Kind of like when you hear Jasons little noise, you knew Jason was about to pop up. This went a step beyond because the video moved quickly until it was scare time, then slowed, then noise, then scare.

Dianne died from possession. A demon, possibly the same demon, killed Dianne. It bit Kate as well. I think theres plenty of evidence that the endgame was for Kate to die and the demon to go bother the next person. The 15 years hunting Kate were unsuccessful because she wasnt afraid. The fear built up as they watched footage though, empowering the demon, making the encounters more drastic, thus making them more scared and the demon more powerful and so on.
