Penny Dreadful

The thing about Bathory, is, she never actually bathed in blood to stay youthful. That was never substantiated and was only added to her myth about a century or so after her death because people at the time couldn't fathom a woman doing such things for any reason other than vanity. She just liked to torture and kill people for ****s and giggles. Plus her father famously stitched a man inside a dead horse and left him to die there.

A family after my own heart.

In his defense, the man in question had supposedly sold his own daughter to the Ottoman Turks as a sex slave, so I guess lord Bathory thought it was justice.

Me and a couple of mates spent most of July last year traveling the Balkans visiting those places, Hungary, Romania, Istanbul. We got to see and hear some really intense stuff, especially when it came to the Bathorys and their whole...saga. Also Poenari Castle in Romania, which was the home of Vlad the Impaler, though that was pretty tiny and unimpressive.... But still, there's some really fascinating stuff in the world.

Roose, that's so ****ing cool. I would kill to be able to see some of that stuff.

Yeah, and all I had to do was just not take any leave from work in like 4 years :funny:

Was totally worth it though, even if it's cold as **** over there.

I have just finished watching the series - the DVD came out this week here in Australia.

Eva Green is excellent as the main character, certainly a fine actress!

I think Caliban (Frankenstein's creature) is wonderfully portrayed as a being who can understand both love and hate. A great performance by Rory Kinnear. I would be hoping that he will find love and peace with the resurrected Brona but I don't hold a lot of hope for that situation. I guess the only hope is that the producers have liked the contribution of Billie Piper and will keep her around as a regular character for a while. As a book, I found Mary Shelley's story a bit of a hard read. I liked Kinnear's portrayal of the monster and I guess one of my next tasks will be to re-watch the two part Frankenstein series with Alec Newman and Luke Goss (and Donald Sutherland and John Hurt). This is the one that is quite close to Shelley's story.

The character of Dorian Gray is well presented and his perversions of sick sex and homosexuality express author Wilde's own depravity in the latter. It will be a great climax when the actual portrait is finally revealed! Hoping that there is a possibility that Dorian Gray will join with the others in their quest to defeat the Greatest Evil! It seems that most of the main protagonists are also persons with evil character traits, so his inclusion in the team to defeat the ultimate evil will fit in nicely in the story.

I am hoping that the eventual arrival of Drakulya will be spectacular! He should be a person of great charisma and Darkness should follow him wherever he goes. Hoping that his arrival from Transylvania is something in the future, and that Jonathan Harker is on his trail from the Carpathians. It is a pity that Mina Harker and Abraham van Helsing have already been dispatched as their characters are pivotal in the defeat of this ancient vampire in Stoker's book. I would like to point out that in Stoker's novel there is actually VERY LITTLE appearance of Count Dracula in the proceedings - his evil presence is implied and this is what makes the book such a great work of literature. If anyone hasn't read the book I would like to highly recommend it.

I am looking forward to eventually watching the DVD of series two when it eventually comes out. I guess I will have to put aside my desire to see the filming of Elisabeth Kostova's book The Historian as this could prove to be rather dull compared to the goings on of Penny Dreadful. Still, I think that book could eventually be a great miniseries also.

Penny Dreadful could get a bit crowded if they decide to include Jekyll/Hyde, the Invisible Man, Phantom of the Opera, etc. There should be some kind of conclusion to the Jack the Ripper murders and maybe even a little Howard Philips Lovecraft could be included with the inclusion of Cthulhu and other elder evils. This could fit in nicely with the Egyptian theme.

I am looking forward to at least the ten episodes for series two!

They could of recast Vanessa.

Which would have led to there being blood on the streets :cmad:

Or... it could've been cancelled. :wow: :p

I like everyone. The casting on this show has been excellent. :)

If you have On Demand you can watch the Season 2 premiere. It is also on YT on the official channel.

I don't want to watch early, makes the wait for the next one that much longer. :(

Just watched the S2 premiere on OnDemand and it's fantastic. It sets up the season's direction really nicely.

Madame Kali and her posse are scary! :wow: I like how they knew right away about Ethan's secret and it looks like her daughter will be seducing Ethan. I really like where they're talking Vanessa's story. In an EW article, it mentioned that Madame Kali will be [BLACKOUT]jealous of the "affection" that Lucifer will be throwing Vanessa's way.
[/BLACKOUT]
And yep... I'm still shipping Vanessa and Ethan hardcore. :p

The Caliban/Frankenstein/Brona story is going amazing as well.

I'm hoping the Caliban plot line is integrated more into the main thread with the core team. Seems likely judging from the trailers.

Is that one witch the Hecate as in the actual Greek goddess of magic, witchcraft, and sorcery?

I caught that reference too and I think given who/what we've seen it is certainly possible they are one and the same.

This show is just too good. Loved th premier. Is that one chick supposed to be Elizabeth Bathory??

The bathing in blood thing might be a tease to that, even though Lizzie never actually did that in history. She could be a version of the gothic vampire that was inspired by Bathory, Carmilla, who liked to bathe in the blood of virgins and predated the Dracula novel.

Did anyone else geek out at the blind daughter character?

I geeked out over the whole episode. It was wonderful. :D

Viktor fondling Brona's corpse was both hilarious and uncomfortable to watch. :funny:

I was afraid it was going to go beyond a simple grope... :( :p
