So I am taking a public specking class and I am going to have to do a persuasive speech and I want to do the a persuasive speech on Christianity and like why it is important but I am not sure like what to say or how to go about this. Well I do believe in all my heart in god there is a lot I don't understand and I can admit that I don't know a lot. Any people who know a lot have any suggestions oh like what to say or like good articles/videos etc that I can find to come up with good ideas of things to say?

These authors are a nice, open minded and holistic overview of Christian history, morality and theology that run the gamut from highly rational and humanistic to the truly devout. Even if you don't agree with them all, it will help you sharpen your own arguments.

Yep... These are books, not just vids or articles/essays.

I'd suggest C.S. Lewis' classic Mere Christianity, which can be found online.

Nominal Christianity is quite popular, but reasoned practical Christianity is most certainly not, neither is it as simple as signing up and jumping in the pool. If you are to persuade someone to the tenets of Christianity, as opposed to the hypocricy of modern organized religion, it will require some hard work.

It may do some good to start small. Start with a persuasive speech that there is an objective morality, that is, there is such a thing as right and wrong that is not subject to how any individual's perspective. That's something a person can find videos and such about and put together a short speech in a matter of days.

I would also recommend C. S. Lewis's Mere Christianity.

Well, it has been rightly observed that 'Religion Is The Opiate Of the Masses" (this was true of course, before the masses discovered REAL Opiates)...

Personally I would suggest speaking upon the value of FAITH in troubled times.
Christianity can be viewed as a source of stability and strength--mainstays in short supply these days of volatile political extremes, school shootings and other stress-inducing events.
Faith in a Higher Power can be a great comfort against all that.

There`s a story about a pilot who is attempting to train a Reverend how to fly a plane. The Reverend is a TERRIBLE student who, after multiple lessons, just is not 'getting it'.

Exasperated; the pilot asks why it is so important to The Reverend to learn to fly....?

The Reverend replies; "To get up there, and be that much closer to God, of course."

"Well'; returns the pilot; "You`re closer to God when you are trying to make a landing. You`re terrible--you have no feel for the controls."

"Oh', says the Reverend ; "I have a Prayer for landings "

"A PRAYER! "the pilot exclaims. "You have a PRAYER for your landings..?"

The man smiles."Oh yes--I have a Prayer for landings, for take-offs...for everything.... Don`t you believe in God.?"

The pilot shakes his head; "I believe in things I can touch--the wings, the controls... Can I touch God?"

The Reverend shakes his head; "You don`t understand--You don`t touch God...God touches YOU."

The pilot is almost beside himself with derision..
" Listen, Reverend...'If you`re up there at a few thousand feet when your engine stalls and you begin to FALL--Do you think that GOD is going to save you?"

The Reverend shrugs:
'I cannot answer for God...But I know that God would know that I was falling"

FAITH.

Undoubtedly, skills of rhetoric and persuasion are very useful. :word:

But I question whether using “Christianity” as the subject can be all that fruitful. I.e., if your classmates are multicultural (from various religious backgrounds - or none), then you’re not likely to persuade many of them. (Not to mention, the topic is a quicksand - especially if you’re trying to “sell” one religion over others.) OTOH, if your classmates are all fellow Christians, then there’s no one who disagrees with you. Thus, it becomes difficult to measure the actual “persuasion.”

Christianity as a whole is too broad imo. If you wanted to discuss an aspect or sect of Christianity, then I would suggest Catholicism...the original form of Christianity. There is so much history there and Martin Luther as a person was not a good person. The problem with using religion as a persuasive topic is that you can’t use empirical data and a persuasive argument based on faith isn’t going to be all that fruitful. I tell you this as a Christian.

If you want to discuss more about Christianity or Catholicism, pm me.

Otherwise, I recommend you argue that Spider-Man is the best superhero ever created. I can help with that too.

While I live in a area were like 95% of people are Caucasian so when it comes to race most people are going to have the same background but when it comes to religion I am not sure like how many are religious or not and I understand the quicksand thing but we can do it on any topic just have to be respectful about it and I fell like this is a important topic.

Ok thinks will look into it.

Yeah, religion probably isn't the best topic for this. In the eyes of non-believers you're pretty much going to be preaching a fairy tale.

---That`s why the little story in my post above works well as an illustration.

...'Read this story more later"...?
Seriously?
It`s not 'War and Peace', it takes less than a minute to read.

Where are you giving your speech...Short Attention Span Theater?

I don't get it.

I agree with this. I read a book on evolution that postulated that religiosity was s elected for because religious people tend to be more optimistic and live longer...or something like that. I can't remember exactly what benefit religion bestowed on early humans. Anyway, religion in general would be easier to argue persuasively for than any religion in particular.
