I don't really see that as too much of a right. I feel like importing an owning should be not be something a private person should be able to do without specific requests and approval processes.

There's no reason that just anyone should be allowed to keep a dangerous exotic animal.

Just for clarification, domestic, exotic, and wild animals are all different designations legally speaking. Domestics are animals "that have been bred and kept traditionally by humans for agricultural reasons" (i.e. horses, cattle, dogs, cats, etc.). Wild animals are any animal "that is not domestic and is fierce, dangerous, venomous, noxious or naturally inclined to harm" (i.e. great apes, large cats, wolves, large or venomous snakes, etc.). Exotics are "any animal that is not considered domestic or wild, but can be safely and humanely maintained in captivity" (i.e. green iguanas, ferrets , smaller nonvenomous snakes, chinchillas, etc.).

The snake in question falls under the designation of a wild animal, and is typically (and rightfully so) considered illegal to own.

Sorry B, but you're wrong. Snakes make excellent pets. The problem here is the size of the snake. A python is not a good pet, neither is a boa constrictor, as both grow to sizes where they can become dangerous. On the other hand, a king snake or a corn snake, which are much smaller than pythons or boas, make great pets, although as with all snakes, precautions against escape should always be made.

It's an unfortunate event for both infant and snake that both died from the irresponsibility of the snake's owners, however, once an animal attacks and kills a human, legally it's life is forfeit. Some leeway can be made for domestic animals such as dogs and cats attacking (but not killing) humans, but the snake's status as a wild animal and the severity of the attack, combined with the overall sympathetic status of the victim, certainly doomed it as soon as it smothered and swallowed the child.

I agree. I think it's dumb to say that it's good that the snake was stabbed to death or essentially tortured.

I understand that the man was irresponsible about having a giant potentially man-eating snake in the same house as an infant but, I have to doubt he was irresponsible about keeping it locked up. My sister's boyfriend had a 9 foot boa and he literally kept it under lock and key, the cage was well secured and we come home one day to find the snake out of the cage. If the animal wants to get out, it'll get out.

How about not keeping the ****er in the house? My mom was adamant about any animal that could potentially murder a person be kept outside or in the garage...and that included dogs. She was not fond of the am-i-nals.
