Pirates 3 vs. Spidey 3

Spidey 3 is going to be the more profitable movie. It's much more anticipated.

Not really, I think the anticipation for both is the same.

How does a movie that ****ty make so much money?

By not being a ****ty movie.

Domestic...maybe. But definately not Worldwide.
POTC is much more loved worldwide then Spiderman. Do you know how many people were pissed at the America Flag thing at the end of Spidey 1. Also most of the international public really doesn't have things like Comic-Con to help build the hype . The early interest in SPidey 3 is just in the states. Most countries outside the states don't show trailers this early so to be honest , aside from magazines and the occasional forums poster who spread the word, most people have no idea a spiderman 3 movie is coming out. All that will change somewhere around November/December/January when they'll start promoting the flick. Only then will the worldwide hype begin.
In comparison , POTC is fresh in everybody's mind. It's a great fun popcorn movie , many have seen it and many know that there's a sequel coming out. The audience is aware of a sequel coming out , as opposed to the sequel of Spiderman 2 which came out in 2004.

And even if you compare the sequels together you'll see just how popular POTC is.

Both movies are considered to be an improvement over the first one.
POTC 1 : domestic gross of 305 million + international gross of 348 million = total gross of 653 million
Spiderman 1 : domestic gross 403 million of + international gross of 418 million = total gross of 821 million


POTC 2 : domestic gross of 416 million + international gross of 587 million = total gross of 1 billion
Spidermnan 2 : domestic gross of 373 million + international gross of 410 = total gross 783 million

The Spiderman sequel came out 2 years after the first one as opposed to the 3 years passed when POTC 2 came out.
While on could argue that as time passes the fanbase increases , we can also say that Spidey 2 was still relatively fresh in the mind of the audience. I mean 2 years is shorter then 3 years right.... And with 400 million made in the states you'd expect that there was an audience who spread the word.
Yet Spidey 2 not only made less internationally , but also less domestically.
POTC 2 on the other hand made more then it's predecessor , on the domestic AND international front.

It just goes to show you that POTC is far more popular then Spiderman. And i do see Spiderman being outgrossed by POTC 3.
Spiderman 3 has the advantage of 1) being a film with lots and lots of action , 2) hopefully not some lame ass time-dragging love story that was a snoozefest and 3) like i said earlier it's has the advantage of opening first and having 2 weeks of no competition.
But when POTC comes , it's gonna crush the competition.

I am looking forward to see which of those 2 will end up breaking the new weekend record set by Pirates.
