Pirates of the Caribbean 5 - Part 1

If Keira came back, that would increase my interest for sure.

I'm still not over Will getting stuck on the Flying Dutchman in POC3 :funny:

Wait, Keira is only 31? Wow, she's been appearing in movies for so long that somehow I thought that she was older than that.

With Salazar, it's almost feel like a check list.

"Ghosts, check. Animal mutant things, check. Zombies, sorta did it in part 4 but not really, but let's so with that again."

The crew in 4 didn't really look like zombies.

I meant, they went for the other definition of a zombie, not the ghouls in pop culture. But they were forgettable.

No doubt.

I would like it if they took the pseudohistorical thing from the beginning of OST and blended it with the Brethren Court. There's some lore there with the Court I'd like to see expanded.

Well the Court are freaking useless in AWE (especially given how much they were built up/alluded to) and contribute nothing of value. So yeah, I'd bring them back if only to do SOMETHING interesting with them.

From the Imdb boards:

While this is by no means a confirmation of her being back, I follow Kevin McNally on Twitter. And recently someone asked him if it was true that Elizabeth would be in the new movie. He didn't outright answer the question (and judging by past examples, he usually does answer the questions) instead he simply "liked" and "retweeted" the person's original tweet.

Here it is:

I know this isn't an official confirmation, but I feel like it's McNally's way of confirming or hinting that she's back, w/o actually saying (probably due to contractual obligations) What do you guys think?

Real talk

They blew their budget before they could do anything with the Court.

In-universe talk

If there's an option to profit with survival, ie via privateering for EIC or whoever, I could see the lords holding back their fleets and letting the ones spoiling for a fight get themselves killed. Then they could bargain without offending the Pirate King since she'd be dead.

That could have been a plausible, if no less disappointing given the buildup, explanation. IF the movie had stated it. But yeah, the first one is probably the more accurate explanation.

That first one's 99% likely it. I came to the second line of thinking after rewatching AWE and noting all the talk of pirates betraying pirates.

I'm not sure that would work. Beckett made his intentions perfectly clear.

Advise your Brethren: you can fight, and all of you will die, or you can not fight, in which case only most of you will die.

Yeah it wasn't like Beckett was going to spare anyone who joined him. Also Beckett had already double-crossed Sao Feng when they'd made a deal earlier, and he tries to double-cross Jack later on after the battle is over.

Something that aggravates me much more than the Brethren doing nothing is Becket committing suicide and his crew just standing there acting helpless. The Dauntless could have obliterated the Black Pearl at close range and at least put up a fight against the Dutchman. Beckett's ship seems to be a take on the 1737 HMS Victory which was a 100 gun warship. The Victory had:

Gundeck: 28 × 42 pdrs
Middle gundeck: 28 × 24 pdrs
Upper gundeck: 28 × 12 pdrs
Quarterdeck: 12 × 6 pdrs
Forecastle: 4 × 6 pdrs

The Black Pearl has 32 x 12 pounders.

Even at close range the Pearl would have had trouble penetrating the hull of the Dauntless in a single pass and due to the Pearl being lower, many of the Dauntless's guns would have probably torn across the Pearl's deck destroying the masts and half its starboard broadside making a second pass almost an impossibility.

So Beckett going comatose and his officers standing there helpless and then abandoning ship and the pearl and the dutchman turning Dauntless into kindling makes me want to chuck my remote.

The Dauntless was James Norrington's ship in The Curse of the Black Pearl. Beckett's ship was the Endeavour.

I mean I think that the idea was that Beckett was so shocked by the turn of events that he didn't really know what to do. And, without his giving them orders, the other officers and crew couldn't react either.

But yeah, the execution was lacking. And it made for a visually cool but also unsatisfying end to arguably the main villain of the second and third films.

It's weird. And the movie is going to be 3 years old (from the production start of principle photography by 2017).

Should have gotten one with Rogue One.

What movie opening soon would it show with?

Honestly, nothing. xXx 3 maybe, haha? If they wanted to, they can wait till Feb for the Batman Lego Movie.

I think it'll get randomly released online.

Btw, I'm getting a weird feeling Will is only gonna have a cameo in this movie. The fact that Bloom was announced so late in the game has me worried, as I really want him to be involved in the series again! The plot sounds like it'd be all the more reason for Will to aid Jack as Salizar, being an escaped soul, would be his responsibility!

Casting isn't always announced right away and when it is announced doesn't always indicate when the actor started filming their role.

There's still a feeling that his role isn't nearly as sizable as his other Pirates films. That there's still more focus on Sparrow, and probably Barbossa, Salazar, Henry and whoever Kaya is playing.

He was reportedly in talks before Thwaites and Bardem. This is from September 2014:

Orlando Bloom says he's 'in discussions' about returning to Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 - mainly because of Johnny Depp
