So what the hell is Barbossa up to? He looks like he's back to being a Privateer?

Governor Swann was very clear when he told our heroes about the heart of Davy Jones.

I learned that if you stab the heart, yours must take its place. And you will sail the seas for eternity. The Dutchman must have a captain.

That's why Jack Sparrow wanted to kill Jones. He wanted to become immortal, even if that meant he could only step on land once every ten years.

He may not have learned about the caveat of the 10 year faithfulness rule. He may not have learned the full story of Davy and Calypso.

I believe the 10 year faithfulness rule is in the deleted scenes. And having rewatched that scene in the movie, that line you quoted could have easily been ADR.

Geoffrey Rush said that Barbossa's megalomania "could explode in horrific ways."

There is no 10 year faithfulness rule. Will must remain the ferryman of the dead no matter if Elizabeth is faithful to him or not. Davy Jones became fishface because he abandoned his duty, not because Calypso was unfaithful to him.

There is no 10 year faithfulness rule. Will must remain the ferryman of the dead no matter if Elizabeth is faithful to him or not. Davy Jones became fishface because he abandoned his duty, not because Calypso was unfaithful to him.

But there's that scene in the cell between Davy and Calypso, where he emphasizes "10 Years" to do the duty before he could see her again, suggesting he would have been freed after 10 years.

I know it's not something explicitly mentioned in the movie, but it's something that gives more weight to the situation.

I'll choose to take that as a mistake on the writers part, and consider the story to be Will is trying to find the trident to free both his dad and himself. That would make far more sense.

He doesn't need the Trident to lift his father's curse, just his own. His father is free to leave if the captain of the Dutchman allows it.

I know I'm harping on this movie pretty hard and maybe this is just my apathy talking, but is anyone put off by the notion of a deus ex machina artifact that can cure *all* curses?

Mimicking infomercial voice:

"It doesn't matter if you turn into a skeleton under moonlight and everything tastes like crap.
It doesn't matter if you're stuck on a ship dragging dead people to hell for the rest of your life.
It doesn't matter if you're a weird ghost thingy that drools black stuff.
If you've got a curse, we'll take it from you with our special MacGuffin I mean artifact the Trident of Poseidon and give you happiness in return."

All the MacGuffins in the previous Pirates films felt they had a unique purpose. This is just some blanket MacGuffin that solves almost *all* problems.

The captain of the Flying Dutchman is only allowed to step on land every ten years. Will visits Elizabeth and his son ten years after the events of At World's End in the post credits scene.

Always loved those post credit scenes lol

It says in the article she'd be needed for 2018, so yeah, Pirates 6....if there is one.

Bruckheimer is saying all the right things - his description of the movie, this trident thingy - that's why I watch these movies.

Loved that speech he gave. After all the crap Depp went through last year, he needed support like this. Glad to hear at least some people still like him!:yay:

I've never seen a huge movie star who seems to be so genuinely grateful for fan support quite like him, and he's been like this for ages.

In that video Depp is behaving like someone that's very uncomfortable with public speaking. Regardless I can appreciate the sentiment. Without fans and people watching their films these stars wouldn't have much of a career. It's always good for actors to remember that and to thank their fans from time to time.

Depp has always been very sheepish in interviews and such though, so it's no surprise he came off like that.
