Pirates of the Caribbean 5 - Part 1

I like the fourth but for all the grief I give the third, the fourth makes you appreciate it. Verbinski is such an underrated director. The man knows how to create images, scenes and moments and string them together to make something memorable despite the quality. And when the quality is great like The Ring, the first Pirates and Rango, and what could be for A Cure for Wellness, the guy does wonders. He has a very unique eye.

For when I complain about the stupid Calypso scene, I remember there's a finale ship battle in a hurricane where Will and Elizabeth get married in the middle of it. I mean ****, the fourth film didn't have great ideas like that.

I have always liked the 3rd movie more than most, but the 4th made me appreciate it even more. I agree the 4th was just so dull and vanilla and the 3rd blows it out of the water for me. Pun intended.

I'm curious to see what they have David Wenham doing. Otherwise, not really interested in this. I'm pretty tired of Depp's shtick as Jack Sparrow, he just does the same stuff over and over, and it's gotten pretty stale.
Maybe he doesn't in this one. Haven't seen any footage yet.

On Stranger Tides was weak and didn't look half as cinematic as the others. Where the hell did the budget go?!

I'm a defender of 2 and 3 as well. They at least aimed for something even though they overindulged. Nearly everything about 4 felt phoned in and solidified how tiresome Sparrow's schtick has become.

Pirates 1,2,3 were awesome. The fourth felt like a low budget parody of the series and its apparently the most expensive pirates film.

Having seen them all again recently, yeah #3 is still the worst for me. Pretty visuals cannot overcome a crap story, wasted potential, characters who seem important and then don't do anything, really stupid and convoluted explanation for things, cheap writing cop-outs, and an underwhelming climax.

As someone who hates wasted potential with a passion, that kills the move for me every single time (to say nothing of it's other myriad of problems).

On Stranger Tides infuriates me. For a film featuring Blackbeard, mermaids, and the Fountain of Youth to be so boring and uninspired is simply egregious.

The first is film is the best. The second film is a better made film then the third, but the third is more fun imo. The fourth film is rather terrible in all aspect imo. Slow, boring, with no point whatsoever.

And they completed wasted Ian McShane, which is sinful.

None of the new characters do anything. At least with the first two sequels, we have a lot of characters we already know and the addition of Davy Jones. Who while wasted, did a lot more then Blackbeard.

I felt that Disney tried to extend one movie into two and tried to be TT and ROTK and failed.

I actually like DMC. It has a lot of chinks in its armor but it's still enjoyable. The last 2 fell off a f***ing cliff though

I feel DMC would have worked better if they didn't waste 10-15 minutes on that pointless cannibal island subplot and instead spent that time on the main narrative. The bloating of DMC and AWE was really the root of the problem. That and the whole "everybody betrays everybody" shtick they played out way too much.

I think the problem was they wanted two movies relatively quickly, and it lead to good ideas being squandered. unlike LotR, there was no road map to follow.

So you ended up with two bloated flicks. Thing is, the first film is bloated as well, but it has more then enough going for it that it gets a pass.

So ridiculous. You just became numb to it at a point. I just stopped caring about any of the characters

After the first film it made no sense for Will and Elizabeth to not trust Jack. That being a big part of the narrative was thus ridiculous. The Elizabeth twist works a lot better without that as well.

Don't mind the directors. It's the writer, Jeff Nathanson, that gives me pause. He writes generic blockbusters. And you have people getting excited over Bardem, but another evil captain with a grudge against Sparrow feels repetitive.
Catch Me If You Can is a generic blockbuster?

I'd say that it hard to guage an opinion on Nathanson. His filmography is limited and all over the map. I imagine he's like a David Koepp or Simon Kinberg type: probably gets the job done and on time, often is used a script doctor, and is a studio man.

I'd prefer a movie that cares too much than not at all, hence my preference for AWE over OST.

Koepp and Nathanson interestingly were co-responsible for fridge nuking along with our favorite screenwriting punching bag George Lucas.

One of my problems with Pirates 4, is that I feel like Jack was "Coward Jack" the whole movie. I wanted the Sparrow who, in a "now or never" situation, would fight bravely. I feel like we didn't get any of that.
