Plane crashes into Austin building

his thinking is probably "they work for the IRS so they are culpable"

As justified as thieves. I mean if there's something that you want and you don't want to pay for it if you take it you will then have it.

If you want to make a political statement, flying planes into buildings works.

It works even if it is against the law.

How does flying a plane into a building full of innocent people make a political statement?

Do you think anyone is sympathetic to his plight after this? Do you think anyone is sympathetic to the plight of the Taliban and Al-Queda after 9/11?

And now that idiot is dead...good riddance.

yeah I dont get how you think you've accomplished anything by killing yourself and casuing some property damage? Paying your income taxes in a wheelbarrow full of pennies is making a political statement. This is suicide and in effect terrorism which dilutes any message you were hoping to convey here.

Who exactly do you think we're spending millions of dollars on killing the middle-east?

People are sympathetic to the Talbian and Al-Queda and those organizations recruit heavily.

Are people going to be sympathetic to this guy? I would say that yes there will be people who are sympathetic to his plight and his political views as evidenced by the myriad of stupid people that have violent and destructive ideas and agendas.

In any case even if people aren't sympathetic I didn't say that it will rally the troops against the IRS, I just said that flying planes into buildings does make a statement.

Exactly.

What do you think the point of terrorism is?

Theres a special place in hell for this scumbag

So does pulling down my pants and taking a crap in the middle of a restaurant.

My point is that while there may be a statement that you're trying to make, it -doesn't- work.

Nobody cares about the plight of this guy cuz he flew a plane into a building. Nobody cares about Al_Quaeda because of 9/11. Those people who do care hated America anyways and didn't need 9/11 to convince them.

All you are doing is attacking innocent civilians, hence the term "crazy", which is accurate, and does not deserve a :whatever:

I disagree. Al Quaeda has grown more since 9/11 than ever in it's history (although I don't know that 9/11 caused it necessarily).

But more to the point whether it works for his goals or not is moot all I was trying to say was that is motive seemed pretty clear to me.

Wait so the no one died! Not even the dude flying?!

Pretty sure he died.

No one in the building did. One person is just unaccounted for and 2 were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

Sympathizing and echoing this behavior are entirely different.

As for the second part I bolded, the only statement it makes to me is insanity.

Agreed, but the two can be related. I find it hard to believe that the Taliban has as many followers as it does without illiciting support for their actions.

Insanity? Either you and I have different definitions of insanity or you were making a joke.

An insane person is such because they have a known provable mental disorder which prevented them or hindered their understanding of the actions that they were taking and causes them to fail to appreciate the nature of what they've done.

As horrible as what this man did was, it wasn't out of insanity. He knew exactly what he was doing.

There is the legal definition of insanity like you just posted....and there is the general label of insanity that is given to someone who does something that the majority of people would consider being outlandish and over the top behavior....such as getting upset and deciding to burn your house down and then fly into a building and try and kill people you don't know because you are having a bad day.

The Taliban and a man flying a plane into the IRS are not equatable in my mind.

I mean that it is insane to make your point against the IRS by burning down your house (leaving your family homeless) and then flying a plane into a building housing the IRS. No normal or sane person would do that.

Did they defuse the bomb he had in the car at the airport?

Exactly. The more we get to know about this guy, the less meaningful his act is becoming (not that it was anything more than act of raging stupidity in the first place). He tried to burn down his house with his wife and kid inside - how is that supposed make us sympathetic to his IRS woes?

OK, he's mad at the IRS. That's a big club. Was he targeting specific people in that particular building? No, it sounds like he was just targeting whoever was unlucky enough to be in his flight path. People who were just doing their jobs and who weren't going out of their way to make his life hell.

I was in NYC on 9/11. No one that day said "Well, that's a statement." I didn't care what they wanted after what they did. There's no justified reason for an act like that. None.

The closest he can come to being 'heroic' in some circles is a headline like "Anti-tax terrorist crashes into office building after trying to burn his family alive.'

Don't think that's going to make him into a martyr. Do you?

What do you think the point of terrorism is?
Accoriding too wiki, Terrorism, by definition, is "carried out in such a way as to maximize the severity and length of the psychological impact."
There has too be fear that it will happen again.
Unless this guy has part of an anti-capatalist Terrorist organization, their is no fear that this will happen again.
He was a loner, driven by intense hatred (and maybe depression at the idea of living with the IRS around) to do this.

I understand your point, but I think a better word would be stupid. Not insane. Perhaps that's just personal preference though.

The Taliban and a man flying a plane into the IRS are not equatable in my mind.

Generally I would agree. However the connection previously had been made that terrorist made similar actions were ineffectual. The biggest connection is that both actions did make a statement and gained national attention.

Same as above, I'd say that it's not "insane". It's stupid. But I think we both agree that it was irrational and stupid.
