New Line is looking for recruits for a relaunched "Police Academy" movie. Original producer Paul Maslansky is back for the new iteration, which has no writer or director attached.

"Academy" was a seven-film lowbrow comedy series from Warner Bros. that saw a city throw open the doors of its police force to any recruit, much to the chagrin of its serious officers. The misfit officers band together and, of course, save the city.

The first film, released in 1984, starred Steve Guttenberg as Mahoney, a repeat offender who is forced to enter the academy and emerges as the group's leader. Other notable characters included Moses Hightower (Bubba Smith), gun-crazy Tackleberry (David Graf), mousy Hooks (Marion Ramsey) and sound effects-spewing Larvell Jones (Michael Winslow).

Bobcat Goldthwait joined the cast for the second movie in 1985. The series, which included Kim Cattrall and Sharon Stone as romantic leads, ended with the 1994's "Mission to Moscow." All told, the franchise took in about $240 million worldwide and inspired a pair of TV series.

"It's going to be very worthwhile to the people who remember it and to those who saw it on TV," Maslansky said. "It's going to be a new class. We hope to discover new talent and season it with great comedians. It'll be anything but another movie with a numeral next to it. And we'll most probably retain the wonderful musical theme."

The early entries in the series featured sexual humor, but later films became more kid-friendly. Details of the tone of new movie, which would take the story to its beginnings with new characters, were unavailable.

This time around, corporate parent Warner Bros. has sister company New Line taking the title out of its library, as it recently did with the "National Lampoon's Vacation" series.

Sam Brown is overseeing.

It says reboot, but I am not going to consider it that if the movie returns with Bubba Smith, Steve Guttenberg, GW Bailey, Leslie Easterbrook and Michael Winslow return as instructors.

One of the newer cadets better be Tackleberry's son. He was seen in one of the sequels (I think it was Poilce Academy 3). It would be a fitting tribute to David Graf.

I would think that George Gaynes is too old to return as Lassard (is he stil alive), so I would think that Harris becomes the Commandant of the Police Academy.

There was talk I remember about it in earlier in the 2000's, I don't mind a remake as long as they don't dumb it down PG friendly like they did with the last couple of sequels.

The worst they could do is cast Dane Cook as Mahoney and several of Judd Apatow's regular core of actors.

HA! I brought this up awhile ago and prolly said it won't be long until they either remake or relaunch these movie again, in the Mannequin remake thread.

Yeah, he is and at the ripe age of 93.:o

the plan is to have new talent mixed in with some experienced veterans (probably most of the original cast), so there probably won't be any familiar faces among the new recruits.

And if Steve Guttenberg returns as Mahoney and GW Bailey returns as Harris, I hope that Mahoney will take a new recruit under his wing to play more pranks on Harris. Those were always funny.

Is he awaiting the long waited sequel to 3 men and a lady. Which would be called 3 old pervy men and a teenage daughter?:woot:

What's the point of a remake or relaunch? They did 7 movies, a TV show, and (if I recall correctly) a cartoon series. So, what can they do that they haven't done already? I mean...they pretty much ran out of ideas once they got to Police Academy 3: Back in Training.

was reading the news a few hrs ago. i am a bit sad we are not going to see a long in the waiting sequel that guttenberg mentioned last yr. i would have loved to see any of the originals/sequel cast members to return again. Though of course hollywood is into the whole remake craze. So i hope this reboot turns out well and they cast the characters good.

to be fair, the later Police Academy movies if I recalled sucked and pretty much had new cast members anyway (asides for a few from the original).

I still argue to this day that the original (and even the 2nd film, only less so) is a great comedy movie that's suffered from the stigma of being associated with the ever-decreasing quality, and ever-increasing crappiness, of the sequels.

I honestly dont know what to think of this. In my mind, the orignal was edgy and more adult-orientated - thats why it worked. The sequels were **** because they watered them down to get the lower ratings and get asses on seats in the bid to make more $.

If they go adult with this, I'll be interested. But if they go pg-13, no way in hell will I give this a look.

"What can they do that they haven't done already?" you ask? Why, they could show it to us all over again! You know movies stop existing after everyone forgets about them.

Hey now, yes, Danson and Guttenberg would be pervs, but with that stache of his, the girl would be the one hitting on Selleck!...He's dreamy.

Let the franchise die. To me Reno 911 was the "relaunch" for Police Academy.

"We live in a society of laws. I've tried to teach you that. Why do you think I took you to all those Police Academy movies. For fun? Well I didn't hear anyone laughing. Did you?" - Homer Simpson

''When I first heard that Marge was joining the police academy, I thought it would be fun and zany, like that movie --Spaceballs. But instead it was dark and disturbing. Like that movie, Police Academy.'' - Homer Simpson

i dont see why film being pg 13 wouldnt be as good. You can get away with alot in a pg 13 rating. Plus they probably would want to market it so teens and adults go to it. So it can make more money off it.

A lot of comedies seem to be rated R nowadays, so it would be kind of weird if they make this PG-13 IMO.

5 and 6 were horrible. 7? Never bothered with it. 4 is borderline though. What saves it is that badass soundtrack :o

Not really. Steve Guttenberg was the only major one to leave.

The original is like the ultimate guilty pleasure. It's not a good movie because they basically ripped-off Stripes and other low-brow comedies of the late `70s and early `80s. But...at the same time...it's really funny and the characters are amusing to watch. So, you end up enjoying it even though you know you shouldn't.

This is one remake I dont mind they try to make.

Joel McHale for Mahoney
