POTC = The new SW?

Star Wars is a classic in cinema history, POTC is a kiddie ride, you must never compare the two.

Star Wars is a kiddie ride, if you use that as a term to describe a movie. It just happens to be a really, really, really good one that changed cinema forever. Essentially there is little difference between Star Wars and Pirates of the Carribean in story terms.

While obviously the comparisons between Pirates and Star Wars are valid, I still identify it more with Indiana Jones. It's a fun adventure movie that's first objective is to entertain, and it succeeds.

That description applies to almost every blockbuster (except maybe Hulk) and especially Star Wars.

POTC: You have got Will who for his entire life believed his father to be a respectful sea merchant and was upset to discover that he was indeed a pirate...something he himself is on his way of becoming.
SW: You have got Luke who for his entire life believed his father to be a respectful Jedi pilot and was upset to discover that he was indeed the evil Darth Vader...something Luke tries to avoid, falling to the dark side.

-Conflicted villian in Davey Jones:
POTC: A pirate who's broken heart lead him to a lifetime of sadness and dread.
SW: Darth Vader who's own selfishness and death of his wife lead him to a lifetime of evil.

-Love Triangle:
POTC: Will, Elizabeth and Jack
SW: Luke, Leia & Han (at least before ROTJ)

-Pintell & Ragetti = C3Po & R2D2?

-Surprise twist at the end of the 2nd film:
POTC: The "death" and subsequent rescue of

SW: The capture and subsequent rescus of Han.

-Black Pearl = Millennium Falcon?

Plus the fact that POTC: DMC has been called the "Empire Strikes Back" of the series.

I don´t see any similarities between Pirates 2 and Star Wars, even Pirates 1 and SW, the only recent movie that I saw, similar to Star Wars is Fantastic Four.

You know, Susan and Johnny Storm are brothers, Luke and Leia are brothers, Reed Richards and his best Friend Thing, are space pilots, same goes to Han solo and his best friend Chewbacca, The Thing and Chewbacca are monsters, and the main villians; Doctor Doom and Darth Vader are persons with armors, with a similar scar in their face ( I think they are brothers ), and these two men have a great desire to rule all universe.


There are more similarities between Fantastic Four with Star Wars, in comparison with Pirates of The Caribbean with Star Wars.

I think harry potter's more the new star wars than pirates though thats very popular as well. Harry potter's really developing a universal fanbase like star wars did from such humble beginnings. Pirates is an entertaining popcorn (based on a thrilling theme park attraction so there's no wonder) movie franchise like it was designed to be, while potter was more of a children's book following the hero's journey model like star wars that blossomed in popularity and became a string of consitently good films.

They parallel much better than pirates, I think. the only reall difference may be that potter remains good and won't be tarnished by bad prequel stories.

first movie sets things up. It's a nice self contained story.

The second ends on a cliffhanger with dock getting sent to the past and marty planning to go back and get him, like the orlando bloom is at the end of this movie.

the third, well we may see that jack's been living inside the belly of the kraken along with all those sailors from the ship bloom unintentionally caused to be sucked down by the kraken. I guess the story willl still focus on finding davy jone's heart similar to how bttf 3 focused on marty and doc finding a way home. Jack may end up dead or going to jail. I feel that like doc he'll have a change of character in this like how doc fell in love and started a time traveling family. I read somewhere that jack might end up with elizabeth and orlando bloom will become captain of davy jone's ship, and go pirating. heh, that'd be interesting.

Although, after seeing AWE, I think imma hafta retract my original idea that POTC was setting itself up as this generations SW--at least, storywise OVERALL.

AWE was all over the map and didn't have the kind of feel ROTJ did as far as concluding the overall story...

Its almost impossible to find any similarities AWE has to ROTJ, unlike how I was able to find comparisons of CotBP and DMC to the overall SW saga.

Elizabeth Swann: Leia, then Mara Jade
Captain Jack Sparrow: Han Solo
Pintel and Ragetti: R2-D2 and C-3PO
Mister Gibbs: Chewbacca, in someways
Norrington: Lando Calrissian
Cutler Beckett: Grand Moff Tarkin
Davy Jones: Darth Vader and Jabba (The Debt)
Tia Dalma: Padme, in some fashion
Barbossa is the tricky one...There's no character like him in Star Wars.

All the story plots that Lostson mentioned are similar as well.
But Will's wounding and ultimate fate is another that should be mentioned.
Will is wounded and through that wounding he becomes closer to something he hates. But he oversomes it, and becomes greater than the fate of his predecessor, and breaks the curse for the time being.

Well look...lets agree that ABSOLUTELY NOTHING will ever truly reach the status of the original Star Wars. SW is revolutionary and changed the very face of Hollywood Blockbusters...hell, they practically invented the term! I'm not trying to debate that...(mama didn't raise no fool. )

I'm just saying that, in the context of the STORYLINE, POTC as a whole, carries a lot of familiar themes of the original trilogy. That's all.

The Star Wars movies are (at least the OT) epic and a level of mythology that has not been reached in a fantasy piece outside of LOTR.

It affected teh culture and is the closest American pop culture has come to Greek mythology. POTC began closer to Indiana Jones. It ended on the Matrix sequels, IMO. But watch part of the Star Wars Legacy on the History Channel last night and see just how deep Star Wars delved.

Plus the OT is completely classic. Even the weakest of the three (ROTJ) is still gold. The POTC just don't compare. They don't have the depth of character, plot or subtext. Not to mention quality.

Plus, SW was driven by a story that was pre-planned before the first one and was an epic tale that had a beginning in the first film and an end that wasn't reached until the conclusion of the third movie. The POTC movies were more light fun fare and the first one was meant to have no sequel and the lack of joy in the sequels shows this.

They're more matrix than Star Wars. LOTR is closer to SW, though ti didn't have the cultural affect on our society as SW did and has.
