POTC = The new SW?

I think the new Star Wars for this era is; The X-MEN Movies.

You know, sci-fi, with the same originalcast for the 3 movies, with the main villians fighting against heores ( Magneto, Darth Vader ).

Sorry mate, but that is so vague and all-encompassing that it could apply to anything.

Star Wars is fantasy, not sci-fi.

Also, Pirates of the Carribean and Star Wars follow the same Joesph Campbell hero journey story; X-Men does not.

Did I miss it, or did noone mention the whole scoundrel/outlaw aspect of both Han and Jack?
nope, your the first to say it.
Good job, can't believe i didn't think of that.

Also in DMC there is this "second part of the trilogy" thing going on: heroes go different ways. Which was in TESB (and also TTT, Reloaded, Mad Max 2 and others).

It's a Sci-fi Fantasy story, and both DO follow Campbell's hero journey.
POTC as the Departure, POTC2 was the Initiation, and POTC3 will be the Return.
Now the debate is, who is the main Character?
Will or Jack?

I think Will...although Jack got a lot of screentime in Pt. 2, I think 3 will focus on Will and his journey towards piracy.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, Han got quite a decent amount of screentime in ESB...as much, if not more than Luke did.

Star Wars is not sci-fi. It's fantasy. It's not about science in any way whatsoever, the whole story could be told in a Lord of the Rings setting.

I know they do......that's what I said.

I think Will is too. And I thin kyou are right about the next film focusing more on Will.

It really is impossible to to talk to you isn't it?
It's Sci-fi because of the setting, They use starships, they use laser pistols, they use Hyperdrives.
It's Fantasy because of the story.

Yep, and that is something to very happy about:D
My mistake... i dint mean SW:OT I meant SW: OT (OT meaning original Trilogy)

I know thats what you meant.

lol ok then... just making sure... speaking of SW, do you know when the boxed set of all 6 movies will be out? Like a box of all of them?

Next year most likely, to coincide with the 30th Anniversery of the SW: OT.

Good Question, I don't think there are plans to release them all in a box set yet. There is going to be a new Box set of the OT some time in the fall with the original cut. I heard they are going to only be fullscreen (ewww) while France is getting the Widescreen.

Top 10 movie franchises most like Star Wars(In order of Star Wars-yness):

1. POTC
2. LOTR
3. X-Men
4. Indiana Jones
5. Star Wars(OT)
6. Alien
7. Terminator
8. The Matrix
9. James Bond
10. Star Wars(PT)

The themes of POTC are just (at least for me) so familiar to the Original SW Trilogy, among the little things:

-Son looking to redeem his father:
POTC: You have got Will who for his entire life believed his father to be a respectful sea merchant and was upset to discover that he was indeed a pirate...something he himself is on his way of becoming.
SW: You have got Luke who for his entire life believed his father to be a respectful Jedi pilot and was upset to discover that he was indeed the evil Darth Vader...something Luke tries to avoid, falling to the dark side.

-Conflicted villian in Davey Jones:
POTC: A pirate who's broken heart lead him to a lifetime of sadness and dread.
SW: Darth Vader who's own selfishness and death of his wife lead him to a lifetime of evil.

-Love Triangle:
POTC: Will, Elizabeth and Jack
SW: Luke, Leia & Han (at least before ROTJ)

-Pintell & Ragetti = C3Po & R2D2?

-Surprise twist at the end of the 2nd film:
POTC: The "death" and subsequent rescue of
Jack
SW: The capture and subsequent rescus of Han.

-Black Pearl = Millennium Falcon?

Plus the fact that POTC: DMC has been called the "Empire Strikes Back" of the series.

Thoughts?

I agree. I like the father one.

I don't know if anyone has said this yet. But like Star Wars, the studio didn't think it would do too good at the boxoffice.

It could have, but it wasn't.

dictionary.com defines the science fiction genre as

"A literary or cinematic genre in which fantasy, typically based on speculative scientific discoveries or developments, environmental changes, space travel, or life on other planets, forms part of the plot or background."

Star Wars is a fantasy that features both space travel, and life on other planets. According to the definition of the word, it is science fiction.

Don't even try with him. His head is about as thick as the Mantle under the earths crust.
But you're right though.

the only REAL similarity between X-Men and the OT is that the third movie in both was a lot weaker than the previous two. :o
