Well, as long as they don't go with "The Thing Begins" or "The Thing Origins"... ;)

No offense to the actors but the cast just shows me how seriously they are taking this movie.

They should called it "The Nasty Thing from Outer Space" , because I remember watching Carpenter's remake and the alien looked pretty nasty.

Is this movie actually coming out this year? Wouldn't it likely come out next year because of post production and everything?

Why do I get the feeling this is going to suck? I mean casting MEW doesn't really give me much hope.

the lead needs a beard half as good as kurt russells

He would also need a hat almost as iconic and awesome as his:yay:

Checked IMDB & there seems to be some new cast members added.

Jonathan Walker is rumored to playing someone named Colin. His character breakdown reads: [COLIN] Around 40 years old, quirky and a bit cynical, he sews some seeds of doubt and suspicion among his new colleagues, Kate and Adam, and he plays poker with Jonas to blow off steam. Colin would rather commit suicide than be consumed by the THING...SUPPORTING (27) Submit British, East Indian, Spanish, Asian, etc, scientist types"

Another person added to the list is a woman named Kim Bubbs playing the role of Juliette. Her character breakdown: [JULIETTE] In her early 30s, French, fluent in Norwegian, she was educated at the Oslo Geosciences Academy, and is one of the geologists who discovered the alien site in Antarctica. Sensing Kate's frustration with the language barrier, Juliette befriends her, providing helpful translations and a kind smile among strangers. As the story escalates toward crisis, Juliette convinces Kate that her colleague Lars has succumbed to the THING -- as a trick to conceal her own identity as the alien shape-shifter...SUPPORTING (17)

The lack of Norwegians in this movie makes me sad...

Someone sent me an early draft review for the script, I won't post it here since the article is spoiler heavy, but based off on what I read, the guy seemed to like it:

John Carpenter’s The Thing has built a cult following since its release in 1982. The film is a horror classic, hitting all the right notes with its manipulation of paranoia, isolation, and the sense of the unknown. It’s natural that a studio would want to come along and steal some of that glory once again. Rather than remaking The Thing once again, the studio has opted for a prequel that hits many of the same notes as the first film…but delves further into the mythos of the creature. Is the early script draft by Eric Heisserer a resounding love letter to John Carpenter or just another insult to a horror classic (I’m looking at you Rob Zombie)? Find out inside.

It’s safe to say that the script is good, really good. In the original 1982 film, helicopter pilot MacReady discovers the remnants of a Norwegian base that had previously housed the alien being. This base is the center stage for the prequel.

[BLACKOUT]For those that wish to know…there are a few references to the first film, include a mention of U.S. Outpost 31 and MacReady’s photo appears on the wall of the McMurdo pilot’s office with a joke written across it.[/BLACKOUT]

If you want to read the spoilers and the rest of the article, pm me. :o

Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr from ADI (Amalgamated Dynamics) are doing the FX for Universal Pictures' The Thing prequel, reported Variety last week. They've worked on such films as Alien 3, Wolf, Aliens vs. Predator, The X-Files, Temors, Starship Troopers and even Death Becomes Her. Check out their official website. Being helmed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr., in a remote Antarctica outpost, an alien spaceship is discovered far beneath the ice. When a group of ambitious scientists decide to thaw out one of the creatures inside, they're in for the terrifying fight of their lives. Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton star.

FINALLY! Dennis Storhøi (The 13th Warrior) has been cast! Also Trond Espen Seim and Jørgen Langhelle might also be in the movie...! About time!

Do the Right Thing
The Sweetest Thing
The Next Best Thing...

Do a search on "thing" over at IMDb and you can come up with a long list of potential names for the movie ;)

Edgerton spoke about the film a little bit:

While out stumping his amazing new flick Separation City (In cinemas this Thursday), Australian actor Joel Edgerton spoke briefly about his next project, a prequel to John Carpenter’s classic horror-hit The Thing.

Edgerton, who’ll appear in the film opposite Mary Elizabeth Winstead, tells Hit he can’t say much about the Matthijs van Heijningen Jr-directed project only that it takes place before the original movie.

“Anyone who is a big fan of the John Carpenter version of The Thing knows that it starts on the American base station but the investigation of where the Thing has come from leads us to know something very bad has happened at the Norwegian base station and the prequel centres itself around there and what happened pre-Kurt Russell”.

In the film, due to film in Vancouver, Edgerton plays Sam Carter a helicopter pilot who teams with a graduate student named Kate Lloyd (Winstead) to pursue an alien life form.

The Thing is in cinemas next year.
