Prequel to 'The Thing'

the idea of this taking place before the original is cool in concept, and as much as i would prefer them to make it look as vintage as possible to match the original, i cant help but expect to be bummed if the effects are better than the original, just cuz if you watch them chronologically back to back, there will be a huge difference.

I'm worried about the digital effects work that will probably be employed throughout the movie. The effects in the 1982 movie still hold up nearly 30 years later and I'd so prefer if the effects team would use the same methods and techniques as the 1982 movie used. The effects of the 1982 movie puts CGI to shame in every way.

Yea the practical effects in The Thing are still great. And make it all the more horrifying that they are "real" and tangible. Such a visceral experience. Love that movie.

The 1982 movie still holds up in just about every way IMO, not just the special effects which are still gruesome and convincing, but also the genuine tension and paranoia that escalates as it goes on, the distrust among the crew and the scenes of The Thing, itself. It's truly a timeless film, IMO.

Definitely. Even though it has buckets of gore and what not, it doesn't rely on it. It's all about the tension and paranoia, like you said.

Most horror movies don't even understand the basic idea of building tension. Especially these days.

Agreed. That's one of the things Carpenters version did so well.

well i remember an early interview or something had reported that they were trying to stay as true to the way they made the original as possible. im hoping that means practical effects. i dont expect them to do any stop-motion animation, but if they did id love it. im sure thats improved an all but thats ok. the tension and paranoia should be in this film too but i wouldnt be surprised if it was more fast paced. its just too bad the character that lobbed his grenade back at his own helicopter at the beginning of the original will most likely be a character we see and get to kno in this film. too bad he will go out kinda lame. it was funny as a character we didnt kno but oh well

id like to see some references to the times, like the dude with the roller skates and boombox from the original, just so it seems like they are trying to maintain the look

Exactly. And the gore in the 1982 movie was there to add to the overall uncomfortable feeling of the movie, not just simply to disgust the audience. It's one of those movies that always makes you feel so uneasy watching it because anyone could be infected and The Thing itself is so unpredictable.

I kinda wish this was called 'Thing'.

Which means that 'the' will be the next 2.

Read the set visit reports, and interviews. They all seem to say they used a lot of practical, with minimum CGI.

So....most likely it'll be coming out with Fast Five? From J. Walker:

To clarify...I was told "The Thing" trailer out before end of May. "Imminently" may have been misleading. Sit tight, it'll be worth it!

I'm sure it'll be a hybrid of special fx, leaning more towards traditional. The 80's version did a great job, but some of the fx didn't quite hold up, spider head in some shots was obviously on an rc-vehicle of some sort while the legs simply move in accordance without really touching the ground. I'd say the cg effects can be used to do touch ups and difficult shots, nothing more.

Really hope this can compare to the original even if marginally, just dont want it to suck really, wont be seeing it myself unless the reviews are decent.

There were more screenshots, but I just picked the ones that stood out.

I prefer a prequel to the Thing, instead of a remake, which no doubt would suck! Can't wait to go see it in theaters!!!

How is this Edgerton dude suddenly in everything? Did Hollywood finally realize that Sam Worthington sucks and decide to bring in another Aussie to ram down our throats?

I have nothing against the guy... but as far as I know, his most prominent role was his five-minute appearance in Animal Kingdom. Has he been in something else that made casting directors go crazy?

He's Australian, that's all that matters.

I think a lot of Aussie actors are just more manly. Think 80's American movie tough guys. I guess that happens when the island you live on is a death trap crawling with creatures that will kill you.

This needs to come out already. Seriously, I feel like it's just going to get dumped on us without any promotion. Then again, the delay was a good thing, too much this summer.

The guy's been acting in film/TV since the 90's, and has had roles more prominent than that. Here are a few things he's been in:

Star Wars Episodes II & III
Ned Kelly
King Arthur
Kinky Boots
Smokin' Aces
The Legend of Guardians
